Moving to Udon Computer buys

Post by tawan3 » April 27, 2007, 5:35 am

I am moving to Udon. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what computer related items or electronics would be better off to buy in USA before arriving in Thailand?

Thank you

quality "Brand Name" products, think cheaper in the states. Rip-off's cheaper here.

for example: a LaCie FireWire Hard Drive, in the states you can find a deal, here you pay top dollar :!:

The problem buying in America is that everything that needs an external power supply is 120 not multi-voltage like firewalls, routers etc... I really do not like to use transformers. I was hoping the Taiwanese or Japanese had joint ventures producing in Thailand.

I've been using an Acer notebook that I bought in Udon for over 2 years. It still zips along and I'd be lost without it. Not a single problem with it from day 1.

I have heard good things about Acer. I bought a Dell notebook Inspiron 2200 about two years ago by the time you put your programs like Office on it runs pretty slow. It was designed for Windows XP. Dell says can be upgraded to Vista Home Edition with 1 meg memory. But to me that is the minimum requirements for Vista which does not let you take advantage of Vista so I would be no better off.

I also emailed Dell in Thailand for prices but because I am in America they were not interested in quotation.

I do not think so but they do have an agent. Most of Dell's computers are still made in China. I think their Bangkok office concentrates on commercial sales. If you walk around the chain stores in Bangkok you can see their servers and POS systems.

Other than buying one ahead of time, how would one acquire a Dell (desktop or laptop) while in Thailand? Is it cost prohibitive?

I am only inquiring about Dell due to my familiarity with it. I've never owned anything but Dell or Gateway, and much of that was due in my early years with computers (1993) due to technical support.

I'd be open to looking at Acer.

What is it you want the laptop for?

Personally, I'd go to Pantip and have one of the more "resident" companies sort you out.

Most people want a top of the range laptop; why?
The only reson for wanting one top of the range is if you are playing with programs that require a hell up a lot of memory; or playing games!
If your only using internet, Word, Excel,Powerpoint, etc... then why pay top dollar.
These machines are designed for business men that frequently use program that require a lot of memory.

Most things coming out of taiwan are better quality than the stuff that comes from China. and Thaialnd does have some.

Come over, go to Pantip plaza (BKK) and have a look. I'm sure you will find what you need.

buy all your computer needs in states, better, cheaper, more reliable and the real thing, no worries of copies. getting ready to have laptop shipped over. also, if have some software to download, such as sony mp3 players, many softwares won't download or authorize use in asia, for fear of copying. i can no longer use my sony sonic mp3 software. not really a problem unless my mp3 players has to be reloaded, then i'm screwed. has over 1200 songs on it, so i'm ok. so buy in states, load it up, then carry it over. laptop is good choice if planning on travelling around the country, self drive anyway, can alway secure in car. good luck.

if I was you, would look into a Mac iBook and buy before leaving the states. More expensive in BKK.
