I've wondered when this would catch on.

With increasing distrust of traditional news outlets (like the one in the OP) people are turning to social media for an unbiased take on events. Governments which attempt to control newspapers, television and radio will naturally attempt to control social media, too. When the news is nothing more than propaganda, people look elsewhere. Something will come along to replace or circumvent the Internet during government shutdowns.

Social media, like contemporary western politics is polarised. You just need to google the opinion that you agree with and you will find left and right media outlets that spew propaganda and have no objective reporting - everything is opinion - add a few statistics (there are lies, damned lies, and....) that back up your opinion and hey presto - the truth that fits my world view.
In this polarised world what is mainstream media? Where is there just apolitical news, reporting and journalism. If I shared my opinion of where is could be found in my country I would be shot down by those who would suggest that it is propaganda.

Agree. Governments increasingly realize this and some think they can control "the narrative" or "the truth" by blinding constituents in the name of safety or righteousness. Look no further than France for the likely outcome of governments continually treating citizens like mere milking machines. People won't put up with it. In Thailand, the coup-leaders control the media with draconian punishments for opinion pieces. This forum does not allow freedom of expression for fear of retaliation. It is only a few small steps from there to complete control and blackout when it suits the corrupt. What do they have to hide?

The grapevine existed long before television and Facebook. While it may not be as immediate or personal, it will serve to expose corrupt governments trying to silence and fool its people.

Mainstream media is best described as the propaganda arm of: Progressives, big government, globalists, The Establishment, and the like.

The classic novel 1984 simply and clearly describes where we, the inhabitants of Earth, are going.

Vietnam criticized for 'totalitarian' law banning online criticism of government

Law forces internet providers to censor content deemed ‘toxic’ by the ruling communist government and hand over user data
Vietnam has introduced a new cybersecurity law, which criminalizes criticizing the government online and forces internet providers to give authorities’ user data when requested, sparking claims of a “totalitarian” crackdown on dissent.

The law, which mirrors China’s draconian internet rules, came into effect on 1 January and forces internet providers to censor content deemed “toxic” by the ruling communist government. Vietnam’s ministry of public security said it will tackle “hostile and reactionary forces”, but human rights groups said it was authorities’ latest method of silencing free speech.

The Vietnam government has intensified a crackdown on criticism since 2016, jailing dozens of dissidents. Spreading information deemed to be anti-government or anti-state online is now illegal in the country, as is using the internet to “post false information that could cause confusion and damage to socio-economic activities”.
Welcome to Thailand, circa 2014. Some people can't handle the truth.
