Dell has diagnostics that you can run on your laptop.
I went to the Dell web site and found your pc at this URL:
https://www.dell.com/support/home/sg/en ... p/diagnose
It may shed some light on your problem.

Pt-flyer, thanks for that help, seems better now after a new battery.
Du-Du, you're being modest, I'm sure you're an expert on everything.

Your welcome. I just replaced the battery on my DELL XPS laptop also. Dell laptops can get finicky when the battery needs to be replaced. I am not a Ubuntu expert either but I do have a lot of experience running Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Dell Power Edge Servers.
