Under these new proposals you'll need a yearly income of 18,000 to 26,000 a year to bring your spouse over to live in the UK.

Not quite as you report. The proposal is for those new immigrants bringing a wife to the UK with them . It does not apply to British citizens or people from the EU , regardless of the wife's nationality .
