The link which is about Kenya states:

"Transactional sex was once driven by poverty, says film-maker Nyasha Kadandara. But now, increasingly, it's driven by vanity."

I think the same could be said about it in Thailand. I'm on the lookout for evidence that sugar-daddying is a growth industry in farangland. I suspect it is.
