Uncle Mustache

Post by parrot » August 30, 2016, 7:11 pm

We've been eating lahb at Uncle Mustache's for 18 years....and I suspect the place was in business a good number of years before we started. The shop is immediately next door to the mosque on SriChomCheun Road. We're such regular customers and creatures of habit that the staff knows what we want....lahb, dohm soht (beef soup), and seuah long hai (sliced grill beef), a coke, and sticky rice. But a week or two ago my wife spotted a dish at a nearby table and inquired. We ordered it. It's a beef soup, served over a charcoal pot in the center of the table, with plenty of large onion, basil, dill, lemon grass, chili pepper, and crushed grilled rice in a hearty beef stock.....oot pyeh (อุเพี้ย). It's a meal all alone.....but we still pigout with lahb and grilled beef.
Uncle Mustache has semi-retired, but his very capable sons have been running the business for a few years.
It's been my go-to-place when we have foreign visitors in town who want an authentic Thai dish.
My wife and I often walk in talking about ice-cream after lunch....but walk out too stuffed to do so.

I'm thinking it's more than likely here, opposite the hobby shop.

That's it, kakariki. The restaurant is to the immediate left of the mosque as you're facing the mosque. Closed Sundays. Dishes are 70baht, except ootpieh which is 80. Ootpieh is normally served kohm, so if you don't like it like that, ask for mai kohm . We usually get it mai kohm.

We were gone for a year, but glad to see Uncle Mustache still in business. Any place that serves good food......for 25+ years, deserves a mention. Uncle's 3 sons and one daughter in law serve up what we've long considered the best beef lahb and ootpieh in Udon.
It's always a toss-up between Viet noodle soup, just up from U.M.'s, or lahb........both are equally good......not many places survive 25+ years and still serve a quality dish.

Wazza,

Unless I am mistaken, the goat place opposite Mr M is no longer there. I tried a few weeks back and it is now a small eatery. I never went to it when it was first announced on this forum, but based on the pics of then, it is no more.

If you know where it moved please let us goat meat aficionados find a supplier. Failing that, there is a goat farm near my village, I will ask if he has dressed goat meat for sale.
I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani

OK, that explained it, I did not notice.

Offer stands however to check out my local goat herder if anybody is interested. Mr M is next to the mosque behind the Monkey House, not far from Lumpini apartments but on the Mosque side of the road.

That's it. Immediately next to the mosque on SriChomCheun Rd. Closed on Sundays and usually closes up around 2PM.

Thanks for the confirmation, not too far from us. I thought that was the place but just wasn't certain. Will give it a go. Thanks for noting the closing time. Will make it a lunch visit.

We opt for the อุเพี้อ ไม่ขม........filled with dill, basil, onions, without the liquid juice that makes it bitter (ขม)

Mrs. S makes a gaeng om (แกงอ่อม) that is similar but is a bit soupier. The fresh dill (ผักชีลาว) pak chee lao really sets the dish off in my estimation. Looking forward to a visit.
