Cant say ive ever had real good TRADITIONAL fish n chips in.Udon ...
Question is .. Cod Haddock or local Tilapia ???

Chris place Tilapia not bad at all sonetimes on as a Friday special,.... BUT not to be missed when he uses the cod loins.instead ..

Gallery ok

Brick House ok

Im.sure there are plenty.of other places .. inc Country grill.etc but never tried them there so cant comment.

Proper fish n chips mushy peas n scraps ... best in the world Steeles in Cleethorpes straight out the vinegar soaked paper with a mugga yorkshire tea .. alas pip a tad too far to travel

Good luck in your quest ..btw if you find fish n chip utopia please inform us all as in Udon im still to do.so.

I prefer haddock over cod which is a comparatively mucky fish.

Right now, the "Perfect Plaice" on Union Road in Oswaldtwistle is unbeatable.

The fish in Fish ‘n’ Chips in Udon is often John Dory, cooked in breadcrumbs not batter.

There’s a place in Central Food Hall basement that does it and a few, if not more, faring-oriented restaurants in Udon that do it too. Their versions are okay but none to recommend, however, for anyone looking for pucker fish ‘n’ chips.

Tennyson. The john dory as you call it, its not. Its that filthy freshwater lead based crap commonly called pagnasius catfish from the ---- ponds around the country. A mate thought he was onto a good thing a few years back and was supplying the mines in Lao with their monthy food. He was selling them john dory and when he told me, I told him the correct version, he lost the contract after that to a french supplier.

Macro used to have decent saltwater fish, red snapper and spanish mackeral, but since the slimey chyneeez infiltrated the south chynna sea with the military islands, no more fishing allowed by Thailand and maybe other countries.

The Oz Govt relented a few years back and allowed this ---- catfish into the country under the name of Basa, barstads, they should be strung up for allowing this and other crap products into Oz.

I very much doubt you will find any quality seafood in Udon. If people want to eat lead based fish with all the other nuclear ingredients, up to them.

Australians are lucky that they have a lot of nice seafood to choose from, much of the rest of the world is not so lucky. Fish farming, like factory farming, aims to supply food at the lowest possible cost - quality/price is an equation. And there are some farms with low standards.
But wild caught sea fish are not necessarily better. Farmed fish can be processed quickly and if the market is local, fresher. In Udon, all the 'fresh' sea fish i see are poor quality and not fresh. Also the best tasting sea fish are usually top predators in the food web and concentrate many toxic chemicals like Mercury, PCBs. I do not want Minimata disease (look it up).

I do like tuna and salmon, but half my fish intake is organic and comes from our own ponds. I am quite happy to eat tilapia, the catfish is so-so, a bit bland - same as cod. The carps taste better but some make herrings seem pretty boneless!

This thread got me thinking about the best fish and chips I've ever had.

It was over 15 years ago in Sydney, harbor area....just a random food truck selling fish and chips and assorted pies.

Half the chips went to seagulls, but the fish was near perfect (though I'm not an expert on AU/UK fish and chips standards).

Sadly, the food truck didn't serve alcohol (beer).....so guess it was a semi-perfect serving of fish and chips.

Mozzie, you need a crisp, cold white (preferably Riesling) to go with good fish and chips - none of this beer stuff. :D

‘Fair dinkum’ change to fish and chip shops across Australia

It comes after the Albanese government proposed a Country of Origin labelling (CoOL) model for seafood in the hospitality sector with consultation for the proposal now open.

It would work by a three-letter system on menus. For example if you’re at your local fish and chip shop and you’ve ordered a barramundi, it will either have the letter A for Australian, I for imported and M for mixed origin.

Assistant Trade Minister Tim Ayres described it as a “fair dinkum reform” that will allow customers to easily identify the origin of the seafood.

They should also apply this "grading" system to all Aussies.

Fair dinkum.
