Fact or fiction?

Post by JimboPSM » January 15, 2007, 9:24 am

After the Iraq fiasco is this believable or not? Is someone just crying wolf again?

From BBC News, full story http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle ... 261355.stm
US warns Iran on Iraq 'meddling'

US Vice-President Dick Cheney has warned Iran not to interfere in Iraq.

The US government thought it was very important that the Iranians should "keep their folks at home", he said.

His comments come after US forces detained several Iranians in northern Iraq on suspicion of aiding insurgents, accusations rejected by Tehran.

Mr Cheney is the latest member of the Bush administration to warn that the US will take steps against those trying to destabilise the situation in Iraq.

US officials say five Iranian nationals arrested in Irbil on Thursday are linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, accused of training and arming Shia insurgents in Iraq.

Iran's foreign ministry says the men are diplomats and were working at the Iranian liaison office in Irbil. It has demanded their immediate release.

Washington has often accused Iran, or factions within the Iranian government, of aiding Shia groups in Iraq militarily and politically, but has offered little proof of Tehran's alleged activities.

'Geographical reality'

President George W Bush has warned that the US would take a tough stance towards Iran and Syria, which he accused of destabilising Iraq.

But Iraq's Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said on Sunday that Iraq was treading a "thin line", warning that neighbours are beginning to use it as battleground in which to settle scores with the US.

"We fully respect the views, policies and strategy of the United States, which is the strongest ally to Iraq, but the Iraqi government has national interests of its own," Mr Zebari said.

"We can't change the geographical reality that Iran is our neighbour. This is a delicate balance and we are treading a very thin line."

Speaking to Fox News, Mr Cheney said Iran was "fishing in troubled waters" by aiding attacks on US forces and backing Shia militias involved in sectarian violence.

"I think the message that the president sent clearly is that we do not want (Iran) doing what they can to try to destabilise the situation inside Iraq.

He added that the Iranian threat was growing, multi-dimensional and of concern to everybody in the region.

Mr Cheney's television interview formed part of attempts by the Bush administration to promote the new drive to improve security in Iraq, which involves sending an extra 21,500 US troops.

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates is in the UK for a brief visit, meeting Prime Minister Tony Blair and Defence Secretary Des Browne for talks on Afghanistan and Iraq.

US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley appeared on Sunday morning TV, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has publicly warned Iran and Syria not to destabilise Iraq.

'Illegal action'

Tehran vehemently denies the charges of interference and says the men detained on Thursday were "involved in consulate affairs".

"Their activities were legal and in the framework of the law," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said in response to the allegations.

The Iranian government has demanded compensation for damage to the building where the men were seized, saying the office and the staff inside should have had diplomatic protection and that the US action was illegal.

"The Americans want to radicalise the atmosphere in Iraq to justify their occupation, but we will act wisely," Mr Hosseini said.

Last month several Iranians were arrested by the US in Baghdad, among them two senior Revolutionary Guard officers. They were released after huge pressure from the Iraqi government.

The Revolutionary Guard, known locally as the Pasdaran, is a parallel military force with its own army, air force and navy.

It was set up to enforce and defend the principles of the 1979 Islamic revolution and answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

No, this, IMHO is credible. Remember the "secret" wars in Laos and Cambodia. Well, this time Iran and Somalia won't be secret. This is all a last minute attempt by the Bushies to drain the US Treasury before leaving office. It aids and abets the Israelis in their desire to nuke Iran. No doubt the Iranians are involved in Iraq. But the US should be their good buddies, we just helped them win the Iran-Iraq War. The "enemy of my enemy" and all that.
Get with it George, radical fundamentalists unite. It makes no difference what religion you are, your goals are the same.
I should never respond to these types of posts before my first cup of coffee.

No , please muscle,
respond more, because you are of course right!!!!!
Bush gave Iran a great opportunity to be an enormous power in the region.
He helped IMO a much bigger enemy than Saddam and Iraq. The Shiites are getting stronger and stronger now.
On the other hand you have Saudi Arabia (they are Sunnis) that already promised that they will protect the Sunnis in Iraq against the Shiittes.
Nice no,
This is in fact a great result for Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld (????) and the other left over hawks.
I don't think they were that clever to predict this end result, but I guarantee you that they will be happy: let them kill each other, this is good for Israel, Saddam is gone, and the moslims will kill each other. What more do you think that they wanted????

Who knows for sure?

I'm Iran probably is supporting Shia insurgents. Why wouldn't they with USA and Israel trying to trump up a reason to bomb the crap out of them and take over the country. An Iraq mess keeps US troops busy and talk of invading Iran from serious discussion.

Israel wants to own a pipeline from Iraq. It's expensive to import from Russia or through Turkey. Pay to pipe through Jordan or getting oil from Syria would be far better for Israel. So Syria needs some "liberating".

We will know the US is on the brink of attacking when US media is full of ..."He's just like Hitler.", "Worse than Hitler.", "Is the next Hitler." propaganda. After the invasion, some porn will be planted in the "next Hitler" home, maybe even kiddy porn and drugs. Ahh, demonization complete. I feel safer already. :fryingpan:

I must admit it is some funny irony. US taking Iranian diplomats hostage...I mean "arresting".

Iran in Iraq?? Bang your dead...

Post by FrazeeDK » February 15, 2007, 8:32 pm

From the Guardian....

Austrian sniper rifles that were exported to Iran have been discovered in the hands of Iraqi terrorists, The Daily Telegraph has learned.
More than 100 of the.50 calibre weapons, capable of penetrating body armour, have been discovered by American troops during raids.
The guns were part of a shipment of 800 rifles that the Austrian company, Steyr-Mannlicher, exported legally to Iran last year.
The sale was condemned in Washington and London because officials were worried that the weapons would be used by insurgents against British and American troops.
Within 45 days of the first HS50 Steyr Mannlicher rifles arriving in Iran, an American officer in an armoured vehicle was shot dead by an Iraqi insurgent using the weapon.
Over the last six months American forces have found small caches of the ฃ10,000 rifles but in the last 24 hours a raid in Baghdad brought the total to more than 100, U.S. Defense sources reported.
The find is the latest in a series of discoveries that indicate that Teheran is providing support to Iraq's Shia insurgents.
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, yesterday denied that Iran had supplied weapons to Iraqi insurgents. But on Sunday US officials in Baghdad displayed a range of weapons they claimed had originated in Iran.
They said 170 American and British soldiers had been killed by such weapons.
The discovery of the sniper rifles will further encourage those in Washington who want to see Iran's uranium-enriching facilities destroyed before a nuclear weapon is produced.
The Foreign Office expressed "serious concerns" over the sale of the rifles last year and Britain protested to the Austrian government.
A Foreign Office spokesman said last night: "Although we did make our worries known the sale unfortunately went ahead and now the potential that these weapons could fall into the wrong hands appears to have happened."
The rifle can pierce all body armour from up to a mile and penetrate armoured Humvee troop carriers.
It is highly accurate and fires a round called an armour piercing incendiary, a bullet that the Iranians manufacture.
The National Iranian Police Organisation bought the rifles allegedly to use them against drug smugglers in an ฃ8 million order placed with Steyr in 2005.
The company was given permission to export them by the Austrian government, which is not a Nato member.

Nice,
But they were not worried in Washington and London when we delivered weapons (chemical weapons included!!!) to Saddam to fight for us against Iran???? HYPOCRITES
Perhaps these weapons are now still being used against British and American troops.

Hate to say it - but it is well documented that the US supplied Saddam with chemicals in the past as well as with instructions to create various weapons of mass destruction.

I believe that if you are truly interested, you can go and do the Google yourself. :D

 We shared WMD knowledge with many allies including the UK!Does that make the USA a hyppocrit when they object to Iran and NK possessing nukes.
I would hate to have idiots that think like that making decisions about what is needed NOW for the defense against suicidal extremists

Doc,

"Well known" indeed!!! read the link from the WASHPOST not known from it's love of Reagan or Bush 1..
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dy ... ge=printer

No direct supplying of chemical items. No direct military supplies.. Perhaps condoning European and other to provide some munitions support (more French Mirage's in their Air Force than any other western jet). yeah you can spin it to say that our policy "allowed" pesticide exports that "could" have been used to manufacture chem weapons.. But read the article and attempt to be non-partisan...

The administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush authorized the sale to Iraq of numerous items that had both military and civilian applications, including poisonous chemicals and deadly biological viruses, such as anthrax and bubonic plague
1)The words out of the article in the Post speak for themselves.

2) In my previous post I used the word "we", this means "the western world", Europe as well as USA, Russia, Australia,China,.........

So why are the decision makers in the USA of today hypocrites in your mind?Your post accuses past decision makers, not todays administration!

Using your premise for hypocracy,Any and all countries could be called hyopocrites because of past history!

Makes me think that you are simply a USA/Bush basher rather than a truly concerned humanitarian.A protester and critic at best!

Hmmm... let me see now Stan. The US is now selling India and Pakistan nuclear technology. Seems a bit hypocritical since those two countries are anything but "stable" and certainly not supporting that illusive concept of human rights.

And of course, there is the ultimate in hyprocracy in that we allow Israel to do whatever they damned well please without any interference. Take their nuclear weapons program for example. We allow that to go unmonitored - and do everything to ensure that it continues unmonitored whilst at the same time we are demanding that Iran disarm their program. There can be little argument that the Israeli government is anything but rational in their dealings with others in the Middle East.

The US has a long history of changing friendships as the needs suits them. Look at all of the countries that we out and out bribed - despite our failure to have any type of relationships with them prior to the Iraq invasion - just to get their support and a handful of troops or an airfield or two.

The point was, and still is - yes - all countries do it from time to time. But, the US claims to be the most virtuous nation in the world - and they do it more than any other country.

Not good Stan. But, I know that you are a flag waver from the get go - so does no good to engage you in any conversations concerning the old US of A.n :D

Stan,
I think you have to go for a medical check up.
I think you are contaminated with "the O'Reilly Virus".
This happens frequently with people that watch too much the Fox News.
You clearly have the first signs of the:
" YOU ARE EITHER WITH US, OR AGAINST US" disease.
