Sir Winston Churchill 1874-1965.

Tomorrow the 24th January marks the 50th anniversary of the death of the man voted the greatest ever Englishman.
I had the pleasure to listen to many of his speeches which inspired the British people during the terrible long years of the war with Nazi Germany and it's axis associates , and after in Parliament .I have many of the recordings and still find it spine tingling listening to them .Next week the BBC is marking the occasion with a documentary featuring his funeral procession through the streets of London, when even the mighty cranes in dockside were lowered in unison as his coffin passed by .
From his many quotes this seems appropriate .
"I am prepared to meet my maker. Whether my maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter"
Winston Spencer Churchill.1874-1965.

Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

There was a documentary tribute to the greatest Englishman on Canadian tv the other night. It was very moving, and as you say, his speeches were inspiring, intelligent and touching. The thing is Churchill was able to motivate the people of the Commonwealth to do their best. It was all about what people can do to stop the Nazis.

One of his best quotes came from the House of Commons where a lady Member of Parliament accused him of being drunk whilst he made a speech.
Churchills reply was a classic.....
"I may be drunk,Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly." 8)

A great put down for any guy whose wife or partner nags him about his drinking ! ;)

There are a terrible lot of lies going around the World and the worst of it is half of them are true.

I do feel that Sir Winston would be the best man even now, his prophetic words are coming home to roost on Islam, I fear.

What was his prophesy on Islam?

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.
What do you think?

I think that debate does not belong on this thread. However, feel free to open another topic with just that statement and question.

Winnie was apparently a strong admirer of Islam and nearly converted despite not knowing much about Islam:

Letter in today's Telegraph
Any who seek to belittle Churchill would do well to read the words of Roy Jenkins at the end of his biography.
"In the course of writing it I have changed my mind. I now put Churchill, with all his idiosyncrasies, his indulgences, his occasional childishness, but also his genius, his tenacity and his persistent ability, right or wrong, successful or unsuccessful, to be larger than life, as the greatest human being ever to occupy 10 Downing Street.

Well, I think it's rather a good quote.

I'm even more impressed that KP delivered that reply without moving his lips.
