Who should have nuclear weapons and who should make that decision? What would preclude a country from havibg nuclear weapons?

well, if the country is a signatory to the Nuclear non-proliferation treaty they've got a legal obligation not to develop nukes but that hasn't stopped some from moving that way.. What would "preclude" a country from developing nukes? I'd say primarily cost both the financial cost of long term development of nukes and nuke carrying missiles and the potential cost of suffering from internationally imposed trade sanctions and embargoes.. Yes, North Korea has nukes but the country is economically in the dump.. Pakistan has nukes (funded no doubt by the Saudis) and other than a Mutually Assured Destruction thing with India what's that gotten them? I imagine if a country truly believes they are on the regime change list then having nukes is a valid deterrent.. Other than MAD or deterrence having nukes is stupid.

There are about 14,500 nuclear weapons in the world. Here are the countries that have them

Nine nations are members of the world’s nuke club.
The U.S. and Russia own the majority of the world’s nuclear weapons.

Might as well add Iran to the list IMO.

add Saudi too since they paid for Pakistan's nukes and likely have the ability to put them on the CSS-10' IRBM's they bought from the Chinese decades ago...

Great to know how many lets me sleep easy at night , but , how many are stored in their home countries and how many are off shore on naval craft well away from their own borders in the guise of world protection? Or elsewhere on top of the sea or hidden under it.
What regularity do they actually walk around with the pencil and count them?
Who actually has the fingers on the buttons?

The was a song by REM in the Chicken Little movie, "It's the end of the world as we know it". Might be closer than we think depending on which Idiot, make that idiots, who has control.

It was the American's that initially enabled Pakistan to get on the nuke bandwagon, not Saudi. Around that time, the Saudi's were just getting seriously into the oil business (with American help). Initially seen as a solution to Pakistan's energy issues, the arms side of it was leveraged when India pursued their own nuclear path ostensibly to counter Chinese aggression. It is claimed that the Chinese funded the Pakistan nuclear arms development as well as supplying materiel. The Chinese deny it but since they had already riled up India, it seems a fair bet they bankrolled Pakistan.

Any way, since Israel already has nukes courtesy of the US, why not let the Iranians have the 'counterbalance' that the middle east needs?

Why Iran shouldn't have the bomb is addressed in another thread, but here's a view from 2014.

Iran is the only country of which we are aware, through their words and actions, that calls for the destruction of another country -- Israel. Not to mention the constant chants of "Death to America." It is clear that Iran would have great motivation to use it as an offensive weapon.

No other country that possess nuclear weapons, calls for any similar destruction of other countries.

Someone better check their link. Not mentioning any names.

The majority of stories in the link show a US response to NK aggression. That's not the same thing as using weapons offensively to wipe a country off the map, since Iran claims that Israel has no right to exist.

The video provided above in the thread explains the contrasts very well.

Good luck to all in their continued research.
