Just posted under the things out of Aussie thread and it mentioned a ship CSS Shanadoah docking in Melbourne.
I wondered how that was important as a historical item. Well here’s a YouTube on why it was in Aussie and how it involved Australia in the Civil War. Cost the poms a few quid to.

It was in the interest of the British Empire to have a weak United States. The U.S. was in an expansionist mood and British North America was a tempting target. Lord Palmerston, the British Prime Minister/Foreign Minister, realised a weaker U.S. would not likely be in a position to threaten B.N.A. Therefore he was ready to support the South if they demonstrated an ability to defeat the North. Early on it looked like the Confederacy might achieve success. I can't remember if it was after Gettysburg, Shiloh or Vicksburg (Atlanta for sure) that Pam doubted the Confederates could remain independent. President Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States moved to Montreal (Lower Canada) as a safe haven for a few years after the South surrendered.

Like any our country, you put your own interests first. The British thought it would be a disaster for Canada (British North America) if the Union defeated the Confederacy. Slavery was not an issue for the British. Power was.

Black Lives Matter did not exist yet to shame whites in Britain and the Empire.

I'm not shamed, I've come to terms with England's slave trading past and I'm over it - no need to cancel.

Where's Desmond this evening, he's normally all over this thread like a poorly tailored suit.

What absolute nonsense. Britain outlawed slavery in 1807. The American Civil war started in 1861. So we were just kidding for 50+ years? The reason that the Brits did not want a powerful US after the Civil War was exactly what played out a few years later. The US invaded Canada, had their bottoms tanned, your house of power had to become the White House to hide the damage when British forces virtually destroyed Washington as a reprisal for trying to steal British territory. Do they not teach history in USA schools?

Whoa Nellie! " President James Madison was intrigued by the analysis of Major General Henry Dearborn that in the event of war, Canada would be easy pickings — even that an invasion would be welcomed by the Canadians. Furthermore, the “War Hawks,” a group of Congressmen from the south and west, loudly demanded war. Motivated by Anglophobia and nationalism, these Republicans encouraged war as a means to retaliate against Britain for the economic distress caused by the blockade, and for what they perceived as British support for the First Nations in resisting American expansion into the West. On 18 June 1812, President Madison signed a declaration of war against Great Britain, supported by both the Senate and Congress." Canadian encyclopedia

My favourite pub outside Lancaster was called Snatchems as the history of the place includes being where indolent English youths went for beer and skittles only to wake up on a ship out at sea. It was on the river Lune and high tide covered the tracks from town and row boats could tie up right outside.

Gosh, all fair game to an Englishman, I'm afraid, Cali. We're a nation of pirates and raiders. Not cancelled, though, we have done things like that in the past, no point in denying it. It reminds me of the Frog and Scorpion story.

Now then, you should release Desmond if you're holding him against his will and let him start posting again.

Do not worry Earnest any country as young as the United States of America, will always complain about something , and do they ever complain, unable to sort out their own messes. They resort to pointing fingers and forgetting that their actions have almost caused the demise of many Native Americans who were quite happily living useful lives, as well as being Immigrants with huge chips on their shoulders , which become oh so visible if you insult their heritage fo their own countries .
