If one doesn't know what one is looking for then yes, a visual inspection is useless. However, regular visual inspection will easily indicate a lot less than "30%~40% under or more." Maybe it's something from all the desert driving I've done that's rubbed off on me but truckers still kick their tires or rap with a stick or a tire iron and from experience, the sound tells them the tire pressure is OK.

Ever seen a pilot not have a gander at the tires before he takes off? While we're at it, ever seen a pilot with a tire pressure gauge?

It's only difficult if you can't be arsed.

High pressures will scrub the tyre centre.
Really high pressure sure,

10% over almost nothing, you probably need to get to quite a bit north of 20% to see much difference.

You should be able to feel well over pressure tyres as the ride gets more bumpy.

Not the bloody pilots I've worked with, they leave that to the ground crew.

I understand that Bush Pilot Airways isn't on the IATA register either.

Typically the walk-around inspection is done by the 1st Officer (co-pilot) as part of a strict regime of knowing what they're taking to to air in. Duties can be shared with certain lead members of ground crews, refueling teams etc.. but they report to the 1st Officer (co-pilot).

I use the club test. It doesn't tell you how much pressure is in the tires but it does tell you if the tire is way too low. The sound is actually quite distinctive.

Does Thailand have TPMS that can be installed aftermarket?

My car has them as standard equipment , but they only trigger a warning when one tyre gets outside of 25% lower than the rest .Its a good system , but in the sun and heat all the tyres will deflate a little , and of course , no warning they are ALL low .

Had a tech teacher that used the same technique to see if any of his teaching was sinking in. :-s :-s

Considering the tyres below probably have about 15lb psi I doubt you'd see if it was a "bit low or high".

That sounds like a terrible system as 25% different is far into the dangerous zone and can easily blow out the low pressure tyre on a longer trip. Also the sun and heat will raise the tyre pressure not lower it, so if your tyres are testing low you absolutely need to add air.
Your tyres will always have the lowest pressure early in the morning before driving.

The TPMS on my Mustang, also standard equipment, triggers a warning at 15%, that's how I found out I had a slow leak in one of my tires.

And yes, during the week-long freeze we had here in February, I lost 5 PSI in my tires. They say every 10° drop in temperature you lose 1-2 PSI. You'll probably never have that problem in Thailand.

Are those run flats worth the extra price over there? There's a pretty big price difference over here.

Obviously, as you're still here above ground to talk about it.

There are very few advantages to having run flat tyres and quite a few disadvantages including cost, poorer suspension performance etc.

How often have you had a puncture?

Personally I’ve had 1 in 10 years and it was a slow one so I could drive it to get it fixed. So even if I could get run flat tyres I would not.

I've never had a set either. Never interested in getting them for the same reason as you. I was just curious if there was a big price difference for them over there.

My senior Physics teacher used the blackboard eraser projectile technique. You could tell he was good at cricket.

Is that the Yaris or the Vios? I still get them confused.
