Why not wait for a response from FDK , before we jump to any conclusion about what he meant with his sweeping statement .tamada wrote: ↑October 16, 2018, 11:57 pmIf you mean FDK's reference to the presence of 'repo yards' in Udon then yes, I have seen a couple as well. The fact that they looked quite similar to US ones with high fences, normally closed gates and are shoehorned into low-rent plots with a narrow frontage caught my attention.
Now if FDK is simply referencing the roadside tents flogging used cars with less than favorable payment terms then yes, there's plenty of them as well. Whether they all resort to nefarious financing and onerous collection practices,I wouldn't know. But I would suspect that by the very market they cater to, most of them can. They are still pretty much an unregulated business and can do what's necessary.
i see no mention of as you put it ' repo yards' in his post . He implied that several of the used car businesses in udon are money lenders that send in the heavies when folks cant make the payment
But i guess your surmising as much as he did .
Re: Three-Quarters Of Bangkok Residents Are In Debt, Says Survey
Yeah, well, we're going to need a citation for that assertion. And it must be from an approved source.

Yes, no mention so I guess his comment was solely about the tents. Excuse the repo red herring (but they do exist).saint wrote: ↑October 17, 2018, 9:55 am

With your "No , i thought not ." and "But i guess your surmising as much as he did" comments, haven't you already jumped to the conclusion that he's full of it?
Despite his earlier, unusually salient comment on local car auctions, we already know mech is.

Yes i have ,But he has the chance to explain himself , even without your help.
Oh , by the way the Repo yards . there are as far as i know three in udon.
Two are owned by major banks , and the third is a reputable auto auction house that works for several of the other major banks .
All are regulated , and have certain procedures to employ before they even think about a repo , and even then when they have the vehicle in their yard , they have even more regulations to follow before they can sell the vehicle.
Hope this helps with your assumptions.

because I've seen several lots that followed the outline of what I stated. In fact, in our area of town I've seen some that started off as car washes, then expanded into "loans" with just a few older cars out front (repos) that now have a couple of dozen cars. Business must be booming! None of these place appear to be anything that would be associated with a large bank repo service/sales. They're all relatively small.. Am I generalizing? Yeah sure but drive out any of the main roads from Udon and count the number of used car lots that have signs indicating they give loans for cars...

There was 23.
When I was waiting for my new car I thought I would buy an old 2nd hand one so we called into 3 of them.
They did not want to have a cash sale & we priced the payments on 3 cars.
A 4 year old car worked out more expensive than buying a new one.

There there dear, no need to get all snippy. So you have the skinny on the local Thai repo business. I'm happy for you.saint wrote: ↑October 17, 2018, 10:28 amYes i have ,But he has the chance to explain himself , even without your help.

Pretty sure saint will be along soon with his empirical knowledge of something he reckons you are totally clueless about and ---- all over your 'assumptions' despite them apparently being based on fact.

Of cause they advertise giving loans .
How many Thais have the sort of cash to buy a car?
Does this make them local loans sharks ? or do they get you finance off site.
They do get a cut from the loan companies including major banks as they do from insurance companies.
That is just business .
