Songkran cancellations
assuming there is no let up in the coronavirus pandemic in the next week or two and bearing in mind 90+% of events are now being cancelled in Thailand, when do we expect to hear advice about Songkran activities?
Re: Songkran cancellations
I hear what you say, but sadly I feel HERE money talks far more than commonsense, in a country with a high percentage of Thai Chinese , then it would be prudent to cancel Government sponsored get togethers for the purpose of getting wet and drunk all at the same time.
Watch this space, but I think doubtful, hopefully I am wrong

I'd love to - using logic of course.
Let's start with how many local Sino-Thais you know.

andthecroc4 wrote: ↑February 27, 2020, 8:12 pmThe school in question had a student who had a high fever after returning from Japan. A relative posted on facebook about the boy, a pratom 3 student, and said he was being tested for coronavirus. The relative posted on facebook before anyone had the results back, but the fact that "coronavirus, fever, Japan" had been posted on facebook everyone went into overdrive saying there was a covid-19 in Udon, but in fact there wasnt.
The boy tested negative for coronavirus . The school is open tomorrow for exams.
Gotta love village gossip and rumours.by thecroc4 » February 28, 2020, 11:58 am
Don Bosco is open. They're doing exams today! Its not a problem.
Re: Songkran cancellations
I did say rumour. And remember the test is only about 70% accurate. The main issue in Thailand is actually getting tested ... and then only the government is allowed to actually publicly to confirm a positive case. Limit the testing, you limit the number of confirmed cases ....

Re: Songkran cancellations
I'm sure that village elders all over Thailand are doing their bit for coronavirus and spitting gallons of water (one mouthfull at a time) over the locals to ensure the virus is warded off from their village
Re: Songkran cancellations
First world countries are limiting the testing too. People with just a sniffle or two are concerned they have the virus and presenting for testing.rick wrote: ↑March 2, 2020, 8:21 pmI did say rumour. A local Thai massage shop in Auckland told me they are getting people phoning asking if anyone has recently returned from overseas or if they have Chinese staff or customers. There's only been one confirmed case in NZ.

Re: Songkran cancellations
They are obviously not aware that you are a customer GT ........ if they were, then coronavirus would be well down their list of concerns
Re: Songkran cancellations
Steady on. This massage shop is run by Chiang Rai girls who I understand are usually real goers. Mrs 93 (aka Mrs 94) prohibits me from visiting the said shop. It's 20 metres from where I work. Mrs 93 once walked up the stairs to this shop around 9 am one morning and saw the Thai proprietor with her head between the legs of a chap old enough to be my father.
I doubt any bloody virus will deter their chase for some extra money.

The Thai football season has been cancelled till at least April 17th.....road running races cancelled.
The Thai Government has asked for co-operation from local authorities to stop all large gatherings.

Doesn't get much bigger than Songkran??

Re: Songkran cancellations
Not sure I'm 100% understanding this situation.
Guy "A" has coronavirus and he goes to footie and gives it to the 5 or 10 people he is sitting next to, so we now have about 10 people with the virus OR Guy "A" has coronavirus and not being allowed to go to footie coz its been cancelled he goes a) shopping with his wife and gives it to dozens in the shopping mall and night market, then b) goes out with his mates to the pub to relax after the stress of an hour or so shopping and gives it to a load more in the pub.
Once he is then diagnosed as having the virus instead of needing to contact the people in the seats and rows next to where the guy was sitting and test them, you have got about a million people who had visited the mall/market/pub that need to be tested

Re: Songkran cancellations
Whether the Government do or dont cancel songkran this year , i think it will be nothing like the usual mayhem .
Ive already noticed the roads , and shops quieter . I even ventured into the bank the other day , and not a soul to be seen .
Just one teller and me . Never experienced that before , ever .

Pattaya , Khon Kaen follow Bang Saen in cancelling SK parties .. not totally clear if this means organized festivities or a blanket cancellation on the anual roadside madness .. and is it an official ban or just a please refrain from notice to all provinces .
It will be interesting to see if more places nationwide follow and in turn the possible drop in road traffic accidents and fatalities that are the norm over the whole SK period.
