A few days ago I stepped up to the teller at Krung Thai Bank in Tesco UD Town, gave the girl a 1000 baht bill and a piece of paper with this written on it and asked her to change the bill for for me:

1 - 500
5 - 100

Now, guess what I got in return? First she started counting out 100 baht bills with this look of uncertainty on her face. Then she paused and went to her drawer and started counting out coins. After a few minutes she handed me this huge plastic bag with one hundred 5 baht coins and five hundred 1 baht coins. I nearly frickin' fainted with disbelief. Then after playing a game of charades with her for half a minute, I finally got my bills and left. She acted pissed off at me and gave me this "go to hell" look like it was all my fault. U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF did she think a farang was going to do with all those coins? Is there an underground casino with slot machines anywhere in Udon that I don't know about?????? You really can't fix stupid!

So you saw her counting out coins (which would have taken some time), and didn't say anything? :-k

Actually, she was interrupted at one point by another teller and I simply thought that she was counting out the coins to assist the other teller. It's not unusual for a teller to be distracted by other customers right in the middle of your being served, so I didn't think anything about it at the time.

Sounds to me this is an example in reverse. She gave you just what you wrote down. Maybe you should have wrote
1-500 baht note
5-100 baht notes
Then again you probable could have just told her, chances are she can speak a little english if not more.

Yea, I told her exactly what I wanted in English, but just for back up I wrote it down on paper. You really can't make excuses for the girl. There comes a point where a person is expected to use their common sense judgement without my having to spell out every little detail as if she was a five year old child. If she had questions all she had to do was play charades with me and lift up a coin and a bill as if to ask which one I wanted. Even I could have figured that one out! Or she could have turned to the English speaking guy just to her right and asked him to figure it out for me. Like I said...you can't fix stupid! I probably wouldn't have been bothered by this if it were a one off thing, but I encounter this kind of stupidity every single day of the week and it just gets to be old hat!

The following day I was in Big-C and I was looking at an exercise bike in the sports section. The machines had signs on them with the regular price and then a discounted price equal to around 7% off good until May 31st. Then I see another sign in the isle advertising a 10% discount off the machines. I had my wife ask the sales girl in Thai if this was an additional discount on top of the already discounted price of 7% or did the price on the tag already reflect this particularly discount and they had simply made a miscalculation on the final price display. The clerk had this very disconnected look on her face and responded saying that the new price displayed was the 10% discount. Okay, so how do you explain the disparity in the percentages? Her answer: "the guy who normally works in this department is not at work today"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then she turns around and walks off leaving us standing in the isle. My wife and I just looked at each other asking the question "WTF was that all about'? Like I said...you can't fix stupid!

SFG, there will be no cure for this in a foreseeable future. But you are in Thailand and presumably intend to stay here so I guess it will eventually wear you down. Try think this: what would you do if you had to live inside an asylum?

My best advice to people going to the bank is to learn your numbers in Thai. I have never had a problem getting change or anything else, but I would have just gone and made a small "necessity purchase" somewhere if all I had was a 1,000 baht note.

sfg, why do you expect the girl in the bank to understand what you say in English, or understand what you mean when you write a few numbers on a piece of paper with no explanation? Your brain is wired for 120, hers for 220. You expect bills, but she maybe deals with customers who come in and need change for a small shop/market.
She has absolutely no reason to understand English.....while you have a great deal more reason to be able to speak a bit of Thai. If you can't, I'm not blaming you......but you shouldn't be blaming the poor girl at the bank either. She ain't stupid.

Thai use a different way of counting.

In Thai language you would read it like this:
1 Baht, 500 pieces
5 Baht, 100 pieces

You are in Thailand and this is very simple basic Thai. I think it's a bit far fetched to call the other person stupid. Maybe it would be better to learn a bit of their language. She probably thought you were stupid for not understanding Thai and for letting her count all those coins without saying anything.

I don't have the patience to queue up at a bank just to break 1000bt note. Much easier for me to go to the ATM and make 2 withdrawals for 900bt each. No service charge and the ATM understands English :D

OT cannot think of one reason to change up 1000 baht. In fact I would prefer to change 1000 baths worth of notes into one. Two reasons: firstly it is less to carry around and secondly I never travel in a tuk tuk. One other thing, everything costs more than a thousand these days, let the vendor sort out the change.

OT.................. \:D/

When anyone wants to leave and go back to their home country, I'll take you to the airport for free.

I can't understand why anyone comes here to live and wants the Thai culture to adapt to them. Yes, if a business wants customers, it behooves them to attract as many as they can in as many ways as they can.

However, we are the guests here. Thailand doesn't have to let us in at all. No one made us come here. We chose to come here. I can only hope that Thais are as helpful as possible and sincere in their assistance. Otherwise, it is up to me to assimilate into their Thai society.

It would not be surprising to learn that those who are most critical and mocking of people like this bank teller would be the first ones screaming to high heaven about a foreigner in their own country NOT ASSIMILATING and learning the language. I doubt that a man from Mexico would laugh at a bank teller in the United States because she didn't understand the meaning of four numbers written on a piece of paper.

There was nothing stupid at all about the Thai bank teller.
