Democracy on Trial in Hong Kong

Post by Laan Yaa Mo » February 7, 2023, 8:21 pm

Let's see if the pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong get the fair and just trial they deserve. At this point there is nothing to suggest that the court will be biased against them. The only contentious issue at this point is why were they arrested in the first place. Of course there are pro and anti view on the arrests. But, it is the trial that counts now. Let's hope it is a fair one.

How is regime change defined?

I am guessing that he is thinking along the lines of William the Conqueror and Cromwell representing regime change rather than Disraeli and the Conservative Party replacing Gladstone and his coalition of Liberals, Radicals and Whigs.

The late Justice Antonin Scalia (U.S. Supreme Court) once gave some guidance on a similar point in an opinion he wrote in a 1994 decision in a case between two phone companies, MCI and AT&T. The issue was whether there had been a fundamental change, or a mere modification to the status quo.
It might be good English to say that the French Revolution "modified" the status of the French nobility but only because there is a figure of speech called understatement and a literary device known as sarcasm.

The overthrow of a government that is considered an illegitimate regime by means of external force (especially military might), and its replacement with a new government according to the concept of political legitimacy promoted by that force.

'Three former organizers of Hong Kong's annual vigil in remembrance of victims of China's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protests were jailed Saturday for four-and-a-half months for failing to provide authorities with information on the group in accordance with a national security law.' The verdict is not surprising although the light sentence may be. Perhaps this is supposed to serve as a warning that stiffer sentences may be given if further protests happen this year. Chow Hang-tung defended the trio by arguing that they were punished for defending the truth, and that the case made against them was false.

Doodoo, you should learn the status of Hong Kong before making comments. Hong Kong is not a communist country. It is a special administrative region of China. However, you are correct that we should not be surprised by the verdict as I noted in my post.

Hope this helps,

It was supposed to be one SAR with two systems so affording its population a high degree of democracy while being administered by a Communist national govt. The enemy have gone back on that agreement.
