My mate was booked to fly back to Thailand yesterday but has been rebooked for Thursday. He tells me Waihi Beach where I stayed several years back was seeing 6 m seas yesterday.

The new government has just called a national state of emergency.

With the North Island already on edge after Cyclone Gabrielle, a one-in-50-year earthquake shook Wellington region. But the two events are “entirely coincidental”, said GNS duty seismologist Jen Andrews​.
