150 Baht ATM Fee FOR WHAT?

Post by cali4995 » July 29, 2009, 8:31 am

Went to the ATM yesterday (Kasikorn) and made a withdrawal. Later on in the evening, checking my
transaction online only to discover I've been double-debited AGAIN. This has happened many times in
the past. After a day or two the account is reconciled. The 1st time it happened, I called my bank in
the States in a panic, and they were able to tell me it was a temporary accounting hang-up on the Thai
end. Is this normal? Does anyone else notice this happens? I just find it all unsettling as it isn't just a few
dollars? Does this have to do with network problems? I've really gotten to the point where I think it's wiser
to simply make a monthly wire transfer? ATM's swallowing cards, out of service, random bill availability?
Since they introduced this special fee, I've just been a little more sensitive about it? Your thoughts please.

In the 3 or so years I have been in Thailand, using my ATM on a monthly basis the "double booking"has happened to me once. I am with HSBC. It was rectified with two days (& before I spotted it).

Up until a month ago, I had no bank accounts in Thailand, so all of my cash came from the US via the ATM. I have not had the double-charge experience.

I have never been double charged or had an ATM card ''eaten''.I did have a check that I waited 6 weeks to clear, not clear and had to pay the $10 fee over again, even though it was their error, and wait another 6 weeks !

It's happened to me 5-6 times already but you only notice it if you frequently review your
transactions online? The money is always returned after 24-48 hours, I just find it a little
discomforting? Well, I'll try and be patient and not "spaz" further on the matter.full-stop.

1% transaction fee to visa or master card 150 baht fee to the thai bank plus the fee to the USA bank
by the time you get your funds 3 banks got in to your pocket and they are going broke another lie
& B/S story I trust no corporations or Governments

AND......I did have my card "eaten" the other week, I'll share my embarrassment in hopes it
may help another hapless farang. Inserted the card into machine as I have 100 times before
and never had a problem......NOTHING......10 seconds...15 seconds...NOTHING...by now I'm
frantically punching the "cancel" button......NOTHING......the screen remains blank as I
begin babbling incoherently at some farang behind me that the @#$&ing machine just ate my
card! well, this guy retains his composure, cool customer. he has a card in his hand and he
inserts it into the machine but only partially, and then withdraws it. this causes the machine,
the rollers to "cycle" and my card appears! only an inch of it and i have to fight with the
begrudging machine to remove it. well buddha praise be because my heart was in my throat.
neat trick to try if you ever find yourself in that situation...and i owe that guy a beer or dinner.

double transactions has happened to me a few times, 1st time........blew my mind, as i didn't have a clue what happen till i got home. i, like an idiot, put the card in, didn't get anything, then did it again. got home checked account, and got 4 transactions listed. as you pointed out, they corrected themselves in couple days, but funds were not available until corrected. it would really suck, if you were almost out of money, and that happened, then what would one do, if it used most of your available funds, that would suck.

also had a few atm cards eaten, one just recently, as i put the wrong pin in, it was about to expire anyway, so didn't care, but also have had them eaten twice for no apparent reason................so i only use atm attached to a bank during banking hours, just in case, then it is retrievable.

well the funds were returned today? no big deal a few hundred dollars goes missing for 48 hours i
just find it all a little irregular? like laphanpon says in the future i'm only using atm's in a banks
lobby during business hours. replacing one of these overseas cards is a major hassle. i'm a spaz

Hi,
Why use ATM. Open a bank account and every month transfer the funds, that you require for the month, into your Thai bank account. With a Thai card you will not be charged 150B as this is for non-Thai bank accounts only. So if you withdraw from ATM five times a month, it saves 750B. This is what i do.
Cheers Doug.

Yes, you're absolutely correct. If you plan on staying more than 1 month, open a local
bank account and simply wire transfer once a month. Problem solved. No atm fees.

Ron, It's a crap shoot. Go inside and pay the 1% and depending if the baht is trending up or down you can win or lose as the hammer doesn't fall at the time of that transaction. Go the ATM pay .75% (gives me a .25% advantage up front) and accept the exchange rate of the day. Before the 150bt service charge the ATM was the way to go fro me but now it's a crap shot, but more convenient.

Scotty out side ATM I am limited to 15K so it not worth it since I would have to do 3 transaction to get my 40K so that would be 450 baht a lot more than 1% fee
