More bad news for UK pensioners
I have been drawing a State Pension for the past 6 years and have received the full tax allowance to date. I am aware that the tax free allowance of 150 gbp, that I have now, is frozen until 2016
Apologies...that should be 10,500 gbp, not 150 gbp

No, but it will remain frozen until personal allowance reaches that rate unless of course the chancellor has a re-think.davecryan wrote:I have been drawing a State Pension for the past 6 years and have received the full tax allowance to date. This article from the Mail sums up the situation very well and the implications for those affected including the extent of the losses that will affect current and future pensioners..

An Expat Exodus. How about Malta or Cyprus then?

Going to Malta or Cypress is of no use unless you can move your pension as well. Most of us will have pensions from UK companies - so cannot be moved. Also only really benefits higher rate tax payers. As usual, the government (inadvertently or maybe deliberately) benefits fat cats again.

The point is that the UK state retirement pension can be paid to pensioners living in Malta or Cyprus, WITH the annual cost of living increases. However, whilst it can be paid to someone living in Thailand, they don't get the annual increases.Rick wrote:Going to Malta or Cypress is of no use unless you can move your pension as well. Occupational (company) pensions aren't affected, as the arrangements for paying those are determined by the individual schemes themselves. I get mine paid over here (in LOS) with index-linked increases no problem.

Although this is somewhat off topic, yesterday saw the first electoral test (including pensioners) since the UK Budget and after a week or so of gross political ineptness by the Conservative party where they were either lining up to shoot themselves in both feet or trying to put both feet in their mouths.
It produced an astonishing result that neither the parties nor any of the pollsters had seen coming – Respect Party candidate George Galloway overturned what was regarded as the safe Labour seat of Bradford West and won it by a landslide.
The results for the main parties were (with vote share and change since 2010 in brackets):
As UK by-election history is littered with rogue results it is rather difficult to judge the mood of the electorate by one result, particularly when someone like George Galloway is the winner - however, there is no way that any of the main parties can draw any comfort from their own miserable performances.

Ashamed to be English since 23rd June 2016 when England voted for racism & economic suicide.
Disgusted that the UK is “governed” by a squalid bunch of economically illiterate, self-serving, sleazy and corrupt neo-fascists.

Galloway is a popular politician with a gift for the gab and can defeat anyone at any time. No surprise here. The guy has many fans in Canada and the United States for his defence of his position re: Iraq before the U.S. Senate when he blew those guys away in a televised debate.
You only pass through this life once, you don't come back for an encore.

Yes, well aware of that. but you get the same anywhere in the EU. The point about Malta and Cypress, is that they have low tax regimes; if you have a big private pension pot and can move it offshore, you can avoid paying a lot of tax. maybe the same applies in Thailand. Not something us poor company scheme pensioners have much choice about - not that i get enough currently to pay much tax anyway; only becomes an issue when the OA pension kicks in.Arjay Wrote: The point is that the UK state retirement pension can be paid to pensioners living in Malta or Cyprus, WITH the annual cost of living increases. Yes, I'm in a similar boat. (My company pension was already in payment when I came to Thailand, so I couldn't move the pot anyway). Now when my state OA pension kicks in I have to look forward to receiving only the ordinary Personal Tax Allowance, to offset against it and my company pension, instead of the higher Age Allowance, which I view as something of a kick in the teeth.Rick wrote:.....Not something us poor company scheme pensioners have much choice about - not that i get enough currently to pay much tax anyway; only becomes an issue when the OA pension kicks in.

..And he does it again..
What the Chancellor giveth in one hand he yet again taketh away in the other:
After his announcement that he would be freezing the age allowances of existing pensioners and stopping the Age Allowances for new pensioners, the Chancellor has now taken back much of the latest pension increases for many existing pensioners by a sleight of hand over tax credits:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-18244640Government does U-turn over 'Cornish pasty tax'
The Government has back tracked on two of its' revenue increasing concepts.
So it looks like pasties will not now have to increase by 20%.
Also those living in static caravans will not now be charged a 20% levy, this has been reduced to 5%. This was another item (static caravans) that didn't incur VAT & was planned to. A new 5% VAT rate will have to be created & applied to these objects from now on..After the amendment, food such as sausage rolls or pasties sold on shelves - that is, cooling down, rather than being kept hot in a special cabinet - will not be liable for VAT.
Sadly no movement on any of the changes concerning pensions & pensioners. A group that has zero 'clout' in UK politics sadly, the expatriate members of that group have even less as they rarely vote either. Expect this group (expatriate pensioners) to be continually singled out for unfair treatment!!!
