Roof insulation

Post by gprit » March 30, 2022, 4:20 pm

We are living in France....but we are getting my wife's father's house in Phakhow renovated.
Question is about roof insulation:
1 two single storey extensions have (almost flat) corrugated metal roofs
2 Main house will have standard double corrugated fibre cement tiles

Question: What insulation (cost needs to be balanced....) will do a reasonable job in keeping things cool(er).
We are looking at the moment at:
Homepro SCG offer 349 baht per 2.4m2 SKU 213895 3"
or
Homepro Sunshield offer 229 baht per 2.4m2 SKU 196542 3"

Can't afford 6"insulation.!!

Any thoughts or alternatives?

thanks

Here are a couple of earlier threads that deal with roof insulation - hopefully they may be of use.

I am of the opinion that insulating the roof is a waste of money. Save that money and spend it on extra ceiling insulation. The space between the roof and ceiling should be well ventilated.

Can tell you from experience that insulation bats placed immediately under the roofing iron is by far superior to anything laid flat on the ceiling. I have worked in these conditions and the former keeps ceiling space relatively cool.

Main problem with the latter is the heat is already pocketed in the ceiling space and any cabling, pipes, etc are all covered by and impossible to access. It also derates the current capability of any cabling. This plus, in my opinion, it will become at some future time, the next asbestos.
Disturbing any of the bats after they have been in place for a few years, results in the release of millions of strands of airborne fine glass particles like a flour bomb. For me it is enough to get within cooee of this to break out in skin irritation that lasts for a day at least. Can only imagine what it does to the rest of the body.

Ventilate the space best approach as an added solution.

Bluejets: Sounds good. How do you hold the insulation in place, immediately under the roof?

I got that cheap recycled plastic rope and tied into rafters, then installed gyprock ceiling, the gyprock adds another .7 insulation
I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani
