Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
Strewth, another upset this afternoon with Denmark turning over the Swedes at the TWELFTH attempt, (previous 11 all won by Sweden). Congrats to Nic Jenson (3 + 1) in their 4 - 3 victory
Could the minnows from Russia upset the Mighty Team GB tonight?
bit unfair as the Ruskies have already had a warm up game v CZ whilst the Brit lads go in cold for their first game

Eurovision Song Contest tonight from Rotterdam. That's going to sap the IIHF Worlds audience a bit.

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
Has all the appearances of an ersatz "World Championship" statts.
Half the world ie the entire southern hemisphere, is unrepresented.
Hopefully Uncle Tilo can chime in with his considered thoughts, after he gets over the Équipe Canada flogging by the lowly Latvians.

err, What on earth gave you that idea Jack?
Oz, NZ, even Thailand ARE all represented, they are just not good enough to be in the "Elite" (Pool A)

The fact that no southern hemisphere country appears in your OP link.stattointhailand wrote: ↑May 22, 2021, 9:53 pm"Half the world ie the entire southern hemisphere, is unrepresented."

I was mislead into thinking you were talking about 2021, not 2019.Oz, NZ, even Thailand ARE all represented, they are just not good enough to be in the "Elite" (Pool A)

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
It might have slipped your attention Jack, but there is a pandemic going round the world, so, as in most sports all but the "elite" level have been postponed in 2020/2021
GB lost 7 : 1 to Russia in their opener which given the circumstances (no Hockey played this season due to Covid and this being their first proper game together) was not a bad result
On the plus side we have 0 pts which puts us level with Canada & USA (0 pts)

Good for Latvia on their shutout victory over British North America. The best Canadian and U.S. players are currently involved in the Lord Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sometime in July, when the Stanley Cup has been awarded, more representative teams will be available to fight for Canada and the U.S.A. in the IIHF Championship games. In the meantime, Go Norway, Go Denmark, Go Israel !!!

And Russia/Czech rep/Slovakia/Finland/Sweden/Denmark/Germany etc etc who are also missing their NHLrs, so evens out in the end. Most have at least 5 or 6 spots for NHL players held back.
Even Australia has a current NHL Player

Why is Australia in the tournament? How many teams are playing?stattointhailand wrote: ↑May 23, 2021, 12:04 amAnd Russia/Czech rep/Slovakia/Finland/Sweden/Denmark/Germany etc etc who are also missing their NHLrs, so evens out in the end. Most have at least 5 or 6 spots for NHL players held back.

Canada's best players are the best and they are missing many more players than the few that are missing from Russia, Sweden, Finland, Great Britain and Australia. Thus, it does not even out in the end. So the tournament is skewed until Canada's top players are available, and on the ice. It would be the same as England playing in the World Cup with players
rounded up from Scunthorpe, Leeds, Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Oxford and so on.

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
I suspect that the Russian team is equally inconvenienced as arguably their top 50 odd players are playing in NHL and the fact that you only name 20 players for each game means that the additional 100 odd Americans or Canadians wouldnt have got in the team anyway

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
Do you really believe that Connor David and Auston Matthews would not have made the Canadian or U.S. teams respectively? Do you know who they are? Russia, by the way, has 38 players in the NHL, so your point is valid about them.stattointhailand wrote: ↑May 23, 2021, 5:44 pmI suspect that the Russian team is equally inconvenienced as arguably their top 50 odd players are playing in NHL and the fact that you only name 20 players for each game means that the additional 100 odd Americans or Canadians wouldnt have got in the team anyway

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
I take it you mean Connor McDavid, yes I do know who he is, and yes he would improve the current players even if he wasn't good enough to stop the oilers being swept by the jets. What I'm saying is that nearly all the teams are players short (I think Russia have six places left open for returning NHL ers) and the likes of Germany/Slovakia/Switzerland are at more of a dissadvantage as the players they are missing are their very top players and there is a huge gap between those and the ones that are in Riga. As for US & Canucks they will obviously miss their mega stars, but those filling in for them are of a much higher standard than those available to most teams.
As an aside GB's barmy army are losing 1 - 2 to Denmark at the end of first which aint bad considering the Danes beat Sweden in their opener and beat us 9 - 0 at last World Champs

I must face the facts, Canada sucks this year. I like to see the Scandinavian countries do well, and let's hope Britain pulls
off a few upsets.
off a few upsets.

Got it back to 2 - 2 in the final period, but lost out to PP goal in O/T (killed first PP and conceeded with 0:24 secs left in O/T)
A point is more than expected so onwards and upwards
PS Septics beat Kazacs 3 zip
Switzerland v Sweden & Finland v Norway next tonight
Just realised GB have more points than Canada after 3 games

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
Denmark is not a hockey power yet they are doing well. Canada used to be a hockey power and pins its hopes on eking out a victory over Italy to save a little bit of face. They are lucky no-one in Canada, with the exception of me, are not paying attention to this tournament. Eyes here are focused on the baseball Toronto Blue Jays, and the Maple Leafs-Montreal series.
Happy Victoria Day!

Re: IIHF Worlds 2021 Riga
I think every team is currently struggling which is not really a surprise given the chaos we have had to the league system for 18 months
