This Week's Shopping Deal

Post by parrot » September 10, 2011, 9:00 am

This Week's Blue Light Special:

One kilogram bags of nitrogen packed raisins in a resealable bag, Heritage Brand, at Makro for 139 baht per bag. That's a lot of raisins, but I'm trying to cut down on junk food, so a kilo bag won't last me long.
The raisins are in the western food section of the store.

Wow, thanks for that Parrot. We go through quite a bunch, and are always paying a dear price for the little bags. I like Makro.

OT likes raisins - good for when you need to munch on something sweet and healthy. However I dare not eat them because raisins, like any dried fruit, give me gas. Uncontrollably. It's the same with real ale which is why I stick to lager.

OT................. \:D/

I just noticed with this morning's breakfast that the raisins are Thompson brand (under the Heritage label). Very moist and a real deal as deals go in Udon.

I believe Thompson is a variety of raisin rather than a brand. Darn good for eating or cooking!

Surpassing the 'Muscat of Alexandria' raisin in 1925, Thompson offered not only a more adaptable growing reputation when it came to soil, weather and pesticide durability, but the thing that put Thompson raisins at the top was that they were seedless. Known internationally as Sultan raisin, Thompson is the most popular and widely available variety. Many people have not had the various choices of raisins out there simply because Thompson dominates the market, however, it does surpass the other choices when it comes to its health factor.

Just returned home from Makro with a 1000 gram bag of luscious Heritage brand Thompson Seedless raisins... Thank you Parrot for the heads up. Will be re-packaging into smaller lots for golf course consumption.

Nice tip Parrot. I have just made a nice bread pudding with them. The resealable bag doesn't keep the ants out though, you need a container, with a lock preferably to keep the kids out . They eat them like sweeties .

"Mot Leaw"
The power of the internet. If at Makro, you should be able to get Aro raisins, even cheaper 115 (?), and basically the same, a dried grape / black raisin, LOL. Last time in Udon, at tops, picked up some of theirs, Top’s Californian Thompson Raisins, think 60 something baht for 200g, knowing a premium price, but wanted them. Usually buy Makro’s / Aro, as the cheapest I know, and my taste buds can’t tell if there are 10 or 12 in a handful and all taste the same to me. If reading the fine print, the Top’s raisins are packaged by, Heritage, LOL. Though completely different packaging. Ligros or whatever are about 55 baht, and think 200 or 250 g pack / box. Did pick up some nice grapes the other day, though 169 a kilo, dark, sweet, no seeds, aro, but not a bargain, unless you want a good grape.

Raisins will find themselves in recipes such as rice pudding, apple pie, oatmeal cookies and others. A very useful fruit.

Now that I'm about half way through the kilo bag, I've gotta say they're great raisins. Much better than what I was getting in the boxes. I keep the bag tightly closed and in the fridge. Well worth the price!

Slightly off topic ....... well it is a week later

Lemons, still green and in an assortment of sizes available in Nong Samrong market. Sort through the bags and pick your own out. Unfortunately the price has doubled this year ........ they are now B1 each  (last year they were 2 for B1)

In the same section as the 1kg bag of black raisins.....Makro is now selling ARO brand golden raisens, 1kg bags, about 150 Baht. Seems I remember someone looking for this type of raisins for baking. The bags are the standard ARO color....red/white bags. If anyone tries them, please follow up with a post.....good/bad/otherwise. I'd just opened a bag of black raisins at home, so I didn't buy the golden ones.

Too late to amend my post, wanted to say thanks to GARYZX6R for the recommendation \:D/ Also noticed HP with long expiry date reduced in price from 132 baht to 118 baht, but no discount at the new Big C (Old Carrefour),shorter expiry date stick with Chern Chims. \:D/

PS Mod note -------------Can the thread title be just 'This weeks Shopping deal',without the word Raisins, keep having to change the subject title and see others have done so also. 8)
