Shopping dress standards.

Post by valentine » December 18, 2006, 8:52 am

I have long observed that the ugliest dressed shoppers in the Chareonsri Complex are normally farangs but last Sunday it reached the pits of indecency. A group of four people, two farang men, a farang lady and a Thai girl were parading round the centre, the men without any type of shirt
and the female farang in shorts and a bikini top, completely unaware, or not caring, that the Thai families they passed were commenting on how ugly they looked. In Robinson store the security were communicating with the bosses asking how to handle it, should they let them in. Eventually a call was made to the police, but I don't know the outcome of this.
My own wife asked me" Why they do that?" What could I answer.? Low class, ignorant, uncouth or just plain stupid?Their age and build would have been an ugly sight even on a Pattaya beach, but in a Town shopping centre it was really revolting. I am glad to say I don't think they were English but whatever country they were from they were an absolute disgrace to it. I hope they get to read this and realise this is a Buddhist country and no matter how poor a Thai may be they would never appear in such a place without a shirt, no matter how cheap it was.

:( It is also very ugly in my eyes, especially as the contrast between them and others is so startling!

But what does this being a ''Buddhist country'' have to do with dress in public?

Sorry Stan if you can't see that a woman flaunting her floppies in a public place where not only young children, but Buddhist monks are around is to say the least, inappropiate, ask your wife

 My wife says the monk is not supposed to be in the shopping complex.Appropiate dress in relationship to monks has to do with the temple life not public life. The monk is not supposed to leer and lust!Poor bastard
I thought Buddhism doesn't teach ,''thou shalt not''!That was the reason I asked you what a ''Buddhist country'' had to do public dress?
I personally have always thought that it is a shame and a waste that people are not raised as nudists!Nothing to do with looks, but practicality and prudishness!
But personal choice aside,If I understand that it is offensive to most people, then I will abstain from being nude ,as I do?
As far as how it looks to me,I agree with you that it is an ugly sight!Just as loud obnoxious drunken louts are obnoxious to me!

Whilst not typically related to being in a Buddhist country - Thailand does have laws about appropriate dress.

For example, it is illegal to ride a motorcycle without a shirt on.

I know of one falang that got stopped and ticketed for doing just that.

I have always been of the opinion that one should dress "decently" when going out in public. Naturally, the standards for decency are dramatically increased the fatter and uglier that a person is.

I think I saw those same two couples in front of the bus depot the other day.
I was hoping they were leaving.
I always do my best to dress appropriately here in the LOS. Even in the opressive heat of summer. When I lived in the beach community of Jomtien, I would wear a shirt on the walk from my condo to the beach or the swimming pool and back. And we all know what a "buffed out stud muffin" I am.

 I wonder if it is actually illegal or if they just told him that.I always wear a shirt on my bicycle ,but I have been known to drive the car without a shirt coming back from the beach or pool.
If these characters were the least bit concerned about whether or not they were offensive, they would have noticed no one else was without shirts around them!
You would think the Thai woman would have clued them in.Says a lot for her character to be seen with the falangs while dressed as they were!!

You all ever notice when at the airport in BKK, how most farangs dress??? Made a comment to someone one day about that. Just don't understand it, you are going out into public. Doesn't being modest and presentable mean anything, looking as if you are there to do business and not looking like a scank?

Cultural Insensitivity

Post by FrazeeDK » December 18, 2006, 8:15 pm

doesn't it seem, particularly up here in Vientiane that the worst offenders when it comes to dressing down in public seems to be the back-packer crowd.. You know, those young to middle aged folks that are "culturally sensitive" and over here in Asia to experience the unspoiled pleasure of interacting with another culture.. Funny though that they don't ever seem to understand (yes I'm generalizing) that walking about in a general state of undress or having a wave of body odor precede them does NOT endear them to the local populace.. It amazes me, that, as in the two couples seen in the Complex in Udon that they could be so utterly clueless to the stares and frowns from the locals as they pass...

I had a "face to face" with a young shirtless American tourist in Vientiane a few months ago. He developed an attitude with me. Two Lao cops watched with amusement while I informed him that he would put a shirt on or I would beat the crap out of him while the two Lao cops watched and approved. I am normally a very quiet well mannered person but I am large and ugly. The wife translated for the cops who got a good laugh out of it. He put a shirt on. We saw him a day later, wearing a shirt.

It was between the internet cafe and the Joma/Pimporn Market. It really ticked me off because of the Wat being so close. You live there. You know how hard Americans need to work to have a good rep. One doofus more we do not need.
I appreciate your avatar. My wife's one year in the US was a crash course in the Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Bros (surprised her as the only one she knew was Karl), Dick Van Dyke and the real classics. She still uses the "Ohh, wise guy" line on me. With her accent it is precious. When we get back to VTT will will have to head on over for some pho (if you like that great stuff).

Yep,I have seen one or two with the tongue down the neck of his latest "conquest" saying goodbye..as he staggered off. And she looked suitably embarresed. I am ashamed by nationality to be associated with this.

Val - why didn't you approach them and politely inform them of the dress code in Thailand. If you had said it in a reasonably nice way i'm sure they would have understood you were only helping them.

Maybe they just didn't know that going shirtless is not appropriate. When i first came to Thailand many years ago I went shirtless, then someone told me that it wasn't polite. So I thanked them and never went shirtless again (except on the beach).

Oldfield. Good point. Under different circumstances I might have done. They had a Thai girl with them that firstly should have told then.
Secondly, unless she was deaf ,must have heard the comments from all around, plus she must have understood the security mans conversation on his walkie talkie, she was nearer him than I. Even if she was deaf it was apparent from the reactions of all around what consternation they were causing. If despite all that, they were still unaware, then I'm sure they would have been too thick to understand what I was on about.
Anyway, my Mum told me never to speak to people like that

 Oldfield, commenting and discussing your feelings about the actions of others is one thing, approaching others, especially if they are complete strangers,is another!
They had a Thai person with them!If they were approachable or interested ,they had a source!
If I see someone I know well enough acting in an ignorant manner, then I would consider ''informing'' them about appropiateness! As a friendly acquaintance, not a ''cop''!
Insensitive people care less about advice anyway!Especially unsolicited advive!

I don't know if I would have approached or not. Most likely not. However saying the Thai girl would have said something is baloney. Most likely she was getting her monthly salary form this group of goons and had more to loose than anyone else. You see that all the time in Bangkok. Folks will dress very bad and a Thai girl right by their side sometimes dressed as badly also.

It is funny you said what you did Pops, as being in the airport yesterday in Bangkok, I saw many like you described. I also agree with Dave on the backpacker group leading the way on scruffy bit.

I do realise Banpaeng that my thoughts on any subject may be regarded as boloney by some. However in this instance I felt that theThai companion was directly involved with them and like it or not, she would be getting, by association, the same disdane they were getting, therefore it was in her interest to say something. Whereas I, on the other hand, apart from being another farang, had nothing whatsoever to do with them, so didn't feel it was my duty to teach them, what they could(should) have read in the guide books before coming here. :P
Anyway I would have been chuffed to see them carted off to the nick in the back of an open police pickup. There is no teacher that can equal experience. :!:

First I did not say anything about Baloney to your statement. However if I write something you always take offence. Guess you are looking for someone to bait and I won't take the bait.

Actually if one would read all the statements, I agreed with all (including yours) that this is terrible way of acting. However what I did say was baloney was that the girl would say anything. That is her monthly income. You don't bite the one that feeds you.
