I'm interested in buying a self propelled lawnmower, but can't find any up here in NongKers. Figured some of you kind folk (and maybe even the not so kind ones!) could point me towards the best place to buy one in Udon?

All of the threads I could find on the internet about this subject seem to be a few years old or older.

NongKhailee,

My missus has just been looking last week in Udon, can't tell you the shop until I contact her or I return from work to buy mine next week, but any big lawnmower shop will have them. She priced Hondas for us
Push mower Honda GXV160 16,000 and will drop the price, maybe because no farang there
Self drive push type Honda HRJ216 36,000.
Other Hondas ranging from 14000 16000 26000 and the 36000

They had other brands on the floor, maybe other self drives??

I am going the GXV160

Toolpro has a Honda engine GXV160 on a Sakari body, auto drive for 17,000. The engine is tops.....but the transmission is horrible. I'd pass on the auto drive on this one. Toolpro can order the Honda HRJ216 from Bangkok for about 25000 baht. It takes a week or so. I know someone in Nongkai with the HRJ216 and he's been very happy with the quality mowing a big spread. It comes with the same GXV160 engine but a top quality Honda transmission.

Home Pro normally has them. I've also seen a rider type lawn mower there. There's a shop on the Fountain Circle which stocks a variety of self-propelled lawn mowers but pricing is normally high at this shop. I bought my self-propelled mower from Home Pro a few years back for 13,550B and it has worked quite well. It has Briggs & Stratton 4HP engine with a belt drive. The only problem I had was in obtaining a new belt & blade because Home Pro's prices were very high. I contacted the company in BKK and they sold the parts to me at a very reasonable price. A word of caution. These lawn mowers do not like gasohol so it's best to stick with 95 benzene to prevent damage to the fuel system.

Thanks for all of the replies!

I'll reply to this thread as far as which route I take, as far as Khun Paul's reply goes it doesn't really answer my question....I have just under two Rai of lawn and it's not exactly optimum to hire Thai's to come and mow that much lawn with weedeaters, especially during the rainy season when some of the lawns need mowed weekly.
I have worn out one push type lawnmower in the seven years I have been here, and it hasn't always been me pushing it. But thanks for the advice.

I have about half of that but over the years I found if yopu leave it slightly longer it actually grows slower. While I amy not be an expert in such matters, the Thai way of giving it a bloody crew-cut almost every week in some parts destroyed the lawns, but leaving it lomger has made them green up more, and become healthier over time .
Also means less cuttings, so all in all a win win situation, sure it is not billard table smooth but then I have neither the time nor the inclination to have that, just various areas of green that i can walk/sit on and enjoy.

Exactly. Adjusting your mower to cut no less than about 3 inches above ground level makes for a nicer lawn. Encourages grass growth and inhibits weed growth. Regular mowing also helps because grass likes to be cut, but weeds do not. Also I've found that self propelled push mowers are a pain to operate if you have a lot of obstacles like trees, flower beds, etc. to maneuver around.

Thanks, I'm all ears when it comes to ways to work less!

It's kind of off subject, but has anyone seen any difference as far as snakes go? It has seemed to me (and my wife!) that there are more snakes when the grass gets tall. (I mean five or six inches and taller)

We rarely see snakes in the mowed areas of our yard (2.5 rai + another 1 rai of government land that borders). When we do, they're slithering to areas with landscaping or trees or shrubs or out to the jungle or under our home. I never fear walking in the mowed areas......but use more caution when I'm stepping in long grass areas.
We have a few adult mongooses that have taken up residence on the edge of our property. A few days ago we saw 3 small mongooses in the same area......so the adults must have had their giggles and created a new batch. That's good for us....bad for the snake population. Although I doubt a handful of mongooses could put much of a dent in a jungle's snake population.

The snakes seem to like our house ,often coming onto the patio area at the back by the thai kitchen. Grass long or short doesnt bother them. Had a Orange and black snake make short work of a large frog yesterday.

I went lawnmower shopping in Udon last week:

HomePro did not have any self-propelled lawnmowers in stock, but they did have a nice big Troy-Built lawn tractor for 134k. When I asked if I could order a self-propelled mower they said no.

Global house did not have any self-propelled mowers either, except one off-brand mower that was all dusty. When I asked about it they told me it was an old display model and that they didn't sell that type anymore.

ToolPro didn't have any self-propelled lawn mowers in stock, when I asked about ordering a Honda self-propelled mower as suggested in earlier replies, they said they couldn't...but could get me a price on a Husquvarna. They promised to call me after calling their supplier in Bangkok, that was five days ago and I haven't heard a peep!

I also checked at the huge new place on the way out of town towards NongKhai, no luck there either.

By the way, when I explained what I wanted (in Isaan) the store reps didn't always call it the same thing. Some called it an "automatic lawnmower" and others called it a "lawnmower with gears". Once I started saying "lawnmower with gears" at other stores then they more quickly understood what I was after.

I think part of the problem as far as the replies to my original post may be that people may not be familiar with what I meant by "self-propelled lawnmower". Where I am from this term is used to designate a lawnmower that you walk behind but do not have to push, as it has it's own drive system that drives either the front or rear wheels. Some people may think that a large lawnmower with a seat and steering wheel that you sit on and drive around is "self-propelled" and technically they would be correct, but that type of mower is actually called a "riding mower" where I am from, although I have heard many here call them "ride-on mowers".

Sorry you struck out with all the suggestions. I'm very surprised that you were not able to order the Honda from Tool Pro as I've ordered lots opf things through them. Part of the problem may be relatred to just who you spoke with. I normally only deal with the senior guy/supervisor out on the floor. I've also spoken with the owner (Khun Viroj) numerous times about ordering items and they always done so. The owner speaks very good English and is normally quite helpful. The only other suggestion I would have is to visit the shop at the Fountain Circle. He normally stocks a variety of self-propelled and push mowers as well as a rider. The down side is he is normally much higher than the shops you've already visited.

I second the comments by fdmike. I was at Toolpro less than a week ago and they had a Honda GXV160 self-propelled lawnmower on display. Thais refer to it as 'awe-toe'.

I've eyed the Husquvarna lawnmower at Toolpro....I figure the wheels would last a week. The rest of the mower looks okay enough.

Given a choice of Toolpro (ordering.....18000-25000 depending on what you order) and the fountain circle guy (35000 or more for the same), I'd hunt down the Toolpro manager and talk with him.

Well...guess that leaves me confused! (but it wouldn't be the first time!)

I'll go back to ToolPro next week sometime and see if I can talk to the manager, the guy who was supposed to call me back with a price was Khun Deng, he was at the customer desk just inside the door, not that it really matters.

It wouldn't seem like they would tell me they couldn't get the Honda for me if they just sold one, but after living here seven years I can't say I'm super surprised. I looked at all of the mowers they had on display and a young man asked me what I was looking for and I said "Roht Taht Nya Pehn Au-tho" and he said "over here", then took me over to a regular push mower, so I looked at all of them by myself just to make sure... because he didn't seem to know the difference. Didn't see any self-propelled mowers or any Hondas at all, so that's when I went inside and asked around more.

Thanks again!
