Bus station -trainstation-bars -restaurants.
If i look on the map it looks very much like the centre of town,is my question so strange?

No - not a strange question, but when you have seen some of the questions on here - one tends to seek clarification so the response can be tailored :)

Yes the Charoen is close to all the facilities mentioned - however might I suggest an even more convenient Hotel - probrably the best in Udon, the Charoensi Grand Royal. It is literally next door to the shopping mall. Rooms are about 1100 or 1200 baht.
If thats too much then the Irish Clock is in the next road and has nice rooms for just 850 baht - again within a stones throw of all the facilities (no pool though)
If you decide on the Charoen its a five minute walk to the shopping area - and yes you can take guests without question.(Apparently) LOL :)

Thanks Paul,i checked several hotels on this site and i believe the hotel is a bargain,i really need a swimming pool to relax in the daytime.
Other nice place i thought of is Udon Thai House which is a bit far from the centre.
I will see,thanks again.

Charoensri Grand is better IMHO... if you are staying for a week or more, ask for VIP card, and your room will cost 1000Baht/night.
Udon Thai house is nice and quiet, very good value.

I stayed at the Charoen back in November. I think it was 850 baht without breakfast. Decent room, friendly helpful staff, good food (epecially lunch buffet). I checked in at 5pm, found the cable not working properly, a maintenance man promptly came up and spent the next hour working on it until it was fixed. I tipped him (this refers to another thread on another part of the forum). They also gave a welcome fruit plate and flowers. Nice touch.

If you go to the Chareon they have a driver there named Twann speaks good english and if you want to explore beyond the down town area you can get him and his car at what I always thought was inexpensive.

I've stayed at both places and I would take the Charoen, but to each his own tastes. There is disco across the parking lot Yellow Bird I believe and a bar with a live band as well, playing American music and the ever popular Karoeki unless things have changed.

Charoen has a real swimming pool, too. Not a wading pool like the Charoensri Grand (4 feet deep??). Otherwise, enjoyed staying at both places.

I liked the Charoen just around the corner from "Farang Alley"
Nice buffet breakfast, swimming pool, and comfortable rooms.
Yellow Bird Disco out the back, a bit old fashioned now, and a VIP karaoke lounge

udon thai house

Post by patayapete » September 19, 2006, 3:05 am

hi stayed at the udon thai house for a month in july.
nice setting good value,if you have transport ok, but if not the tuk-tuk drivers can be a pain?
but if your an action man  i'd of thought something more central would be better suited?

charoensri grand

Post by dill » October 1, 2006, 9:34 am

just made a booking for the end of december and they did not respond to my email so i gave them a cal and they adviced me that they did not receive email .
anyhow they told me that if i stayed for 7 days or more they would give me a discount 1120 bath breakfast included for two people.
good price but will be looking at other places to stay when i get there like the city lodge and banchiage hotel.

1120 baht plus free breakfast for two? That sounds more like the Charoensri Grand Hotel's rates and not the Charoen Hotel. Both are nice places to stay although, in my opinion, the Charoen's pool is better.

Here's some info for Charoen:

Telephone: Tel 042 248155, Fax 042 246126
Address: 549 Phosi Road, Udon Thani, Thailand 41000
Price: 600 - 800
