With all the bad press the taxi folks are getting in Bangkok, it's worth remembering just how cheap a Bangkok Taxi is. A 2km taxi ride from Don Muang to the city today cost 250 baht......that includes one 50 baht fee for the expressway and the 50 baht airport fee. That's less than $8!!
I've never had a problem with taxis at either of the two airports in Bangkok......queue up, get a receipt, use the meter. On a few occasions while in the center of the city and wanting to go elsewhere in the city, I've had a taxi tell me, before boarding, that he wouldn't use a meter to go to that destination. No problem, wave him off and wait for another cab. Simple......and cheap!

20km in Udon is around 400 baht, and that`s not including any expressway or airport fees. Taxis in Bangkok are very cheap, as you say.parrot wrote:You're right.....20km. Sorry!
After living 5-6 years in Bangkok and having hundreds of taxirides, I`ve only had "problems" a couple of times and that was only they driving a longer way than they should have. Of course, there`s also some who want a fixed price, mostly because of the trafic in the area you want to go, but then it`s only to get another one.
All in all, I`m very satisfied with both prices and service from Bangkok taxis.

If I took a cab from the airport to my home, about 18k from the Udon airport, I doubt the driver would be able to get a return fare to town. I'd guess a Bangkok taxi doesn't face that same problem.....most of the time.
Has anyone tried to hire out an Udon taxi for several hours? Curious what they'd charge for a 4images hour tour of sights around the area.......or all day.

after literally hundreds of taxi rides in Bangkok I never had any experience with ripoffs.. As Parrot pointed out, when a taxi driver would refuse to use the meter, I'd just get another taxi.. The only taxi related problem I ever had was getting one near "shift change" when drivers were getting ready to turn the taxis in to the taxi rental company, which generally seemed to be around 1800.. As for taxi rates, despite a little jiggling the flag fall rate when I first arrived to work in BKK in Sept of 97 was 35 baht.. It is still there with the rate "clicks" adjusted somewhat despite huge increases in gasoline and NG prices over the years (premium gas was around 12-13 baht a liter in 98).
The current laws for taxis are strict but rarely enforced unless there's a media storm as there's been lately. A Taxi driver can get fined/suspended for refusing a fare, for not using the meter, for being overtly rude...

All that said, it's not a good idea to take taxis that are parked in front of many of the hotels in Bangkok. I always get the ones running on the street. Side note........back in the days of ChiangKaiSkek in Taiwan and over the years in Bangkok, I've found taxi drivers to be very open about their political feelings......behind the closed doors of their taxi.

I don't know about the cost.......guess it'd be in the range of 7k or so. But given the 20+ flights to Udon each day, I'd think you'd be better off taking a flight. Worse case, you arrive Swampy at 11PM, stay at Thongta Resort (nearby) for 1000 Baht, then catch the first flight out of BKK for around 1500 Baht or so. You'd arrive in Khonkaen somewhat rested and not in fear of your life driving the roads at night. If you arrive Swampy anytime before 4PM or so, you should be able to arrange a late flight from Swampy or Don Muang to Udon.
