Have you ever seen the drivers position on these buses, they are so badly designed.
He is lower that a pick up driver and practically blind to his left side so would be reliant on one of the crew members.
Apparently the train did make several warning calls and passengers were heard screaming but this would have all been drowned out by the LOUD music.

for the few train crossings in Udon Thani, I haven't seen or noticed any caution signs lights to notify drivers when a train is nearing.

trains here are definitely not like the bullet trains in Japan (where every crossing has electronic gates and lights to warn drivers), still can see this easily happening here in Udon.

of course the govt will make a big deal about train safety this month, with nothing happening until the next accident..............then more noise/fuss and still nothing will be done.........Amazing Thailand.

Mosquito Said.,....for the few train crossings in Udon Thani, I haven't seen or noticed any caution signs lights to notify drivers when a train is nearing........You must have had your eyes CLOSED Then, On the road from Nong-Khai into Udon there are "Flashing red warning lights "& The Barrier also drops about 1 Minute BEFORE The train gets to that crossing...Open Yer Eyes Man, It'll probably save yer life.....

The controlled crossings only apply to the junctions with main roads. I have been on a dirt road just off the Nong Khai road, and where it crossed the railway line i don't think there was even a light. Also, there is often a considerable embankment to climb on the dirt road to reach the level of the tracks, which cannot be negotiated at any speed. Hence a bus could easily bottom out going across.

As I read the story in the Thai press, road barriers were installed........but not operational. Same same problem with the nighttime accident that occurred recently just south of Udon's ring road. don't live in town, but have driven to Nong Khai a number of time and never had the luck (or bad luck) to see any of the standard train crossing safety gear in operation.

guess you're just lucky that way!!

A group of reporters went out yesterday to look at the 7 locations selected for road barriers in/around Udon......budget 3.3 million baht. The work was scheduled to be completed nlt 31 March. Unfortunately the barriers, while installed, are not yet operational.
The sites continue to have signs advising drivers that the barriers are not yet operational.

the picture shows the old rolling barriers still there. That generally indicates there's a crossing caretaker who is supposed to roll them out when a train approaches... The bus accident video from the other day also shows the rolling barriers by the double tracks on both sides.. So.. what happened to the crossing caretaker?

Well the one next to Sappasin Village had about 10 shirts and 3 or 4 prs trousers hanging over the barriers a couple of days ago ........ not sure if the crossing keeper was "moonlighting" or the local laundry people were taking advantage of the new facility
