No worries it's worked for me for years, I also don't take the talking translator with me as like electric telephone water car tax etc just slows the process up.
The girls are quite helpful in there ,no need to take in a translator ,ISH , i took my American friend in to get his car & bike license ,they used the computer translator on the subject of Endorsement on his American license , the endorsement on his license was for the bike , but an Endorsement on an English driving license ,means you've committed a motoring offence ( many years have passed under the bridge since i lived there ,but i think it is still the same now ) it took awhile to explain /clarify this but all was good in the end , And No Video for him ,it was a Friday afternoon ,

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a great idea. :)
Same for me at Nong Han office. In and out with a new 5 year licence in just under 25 minutes.

Is a medical certificate required for a 5 year renewal? My last 5 year renewal did not require but on the forums some say yes and some say no. I know it is require for the one year. Thank you in advance

That is also what I was told in AEK last time. For 2 licenses they require 1 original of each document for the first licence plus 1 copy of each for the second. Also unless the prices have changed radically in the last year it should be a little over 100 Baht per licence

FWIW there is no 1 year licence, the temporary license is 2 years, that changed around 2 years ago.

Just an up date , went to Kumphawapi license dept ,just over the level crossing , re new 5 year license ,the brake re-action test , press accelerator count to 5 press brake ,you'll be spot on , eye test colours etc ,they checked each eye individually ( i don't remember this last time , ) i've got a dodgy left eye to say the least ,so having watched him test other people i knew what he was going to do ,so guessed correctly ,if i'd have failed as i should have , with one eye ,What would the consequences be ??? usual 1 hour long Vid but with a lot more info on how to drive , instead of the nonsense truck weights etc that i saw last time ,505 bht ,

How early can you apply for 5 year license before 2 year one expires?

The official ruling is 3 months before, but if you go 1 day after you get an extra 364 days in the licence.

So for me always just after the expiry date but within 1 year.

FWIW I would never use Kumphawapi. They make up their own rules just because they can. AEK and the main office are good.

Exactly, it runs to the 5th birthday after renewal, so go before it expires 5 years go just after 6 years.
You will have got 5 years 10 months.

So to get my first 5 year license it is ok to ride with expired LICENCE for a year then get a 5 year LICENCE
I know this is T I T but that’s ridiculous

Right, and to extend the logic, if you wait until it's been expired 20 years and go in to renew it the day after your birthday, you'll get a whopping 26 years for the same low price of a 4-year license. Ahh, paradise.

Sure its fine, go ahead. If the police find you driving without a license it is a 500 baht fine. If you have an accident and are at fault while driving without a license, do you think your insurance company will stand behind you?

Personally I felt it worth the risk to wait until the day my last license expired.

Reminds me of an ex-girlfriend who never had a license until I suggested it. She had been driving her motorcycle around her village for years. Why didn't she have a license? "There are no police in my village."

I personally dont see the point in letting your license expire just to gain 364 days , to save 505bht it would take you 5 renewals , 30 years , whilst running the risk of being fined by the BIB , 500bht , i don't like giving them fck all ,

Nobody suggested that you ride or drive with an expired licence, if stopped you will be fined,

just that if you renew the day after your birthday you get virtually a six year licence.
If you renew before your birthday you get 5 years

Your licence runs to your birthday.
