Am also renewing drivers licence tomorrow in Udon and also 70 this month. Last 5 year renewal was done under AEK Udon but I believe that's now only for motor bikes?
I saw on another forum that some places are now making you complete online multiple choice tests for renewals. Is that the case in Udon?
Also my tabian ban is from Jomtien but licence issued here in Udon, Can anyone tell me if that is likely to cause a problem?
Thanks

Driving to Udon in the morning to try for this renewal. Appreciate if anyone could answer my concerns.

I only have international DL is that not good enough
I only stay 6 months each year
Is it worth the hassle to get a Thai Licence?

Go to Smart Drive, address and phone number on the web, all you need is your current license and a couple of passport photos. Passport i think as well and some baht.

I suspect the specific answer is that your IDL is valid in your country of origin for one year. However, it is only valid in Thailand for 90 days per visit. Already having an IDL makes getting a Thai license dead easy, and then there is no longer a question about whether or not your driving license is valid for Thailand.

The IDL that is quoted I believe is the International Driving PERMIT.

its issued as an endorsement of your residential driving licence and is acceptable by many countries BUT not All.

Thailand is a signatory to this treaty etc that allows / accepts the IDP.

Yes it's worth the hassle to get a Thai license.
My last 2 have been for 2 years each time. I'm a tourist for license purposes.
Have you got a missus. She should be able to help you through the maze.

Only for a limited time, you then have no insurance... Take the chance if you will, or just make yourself legal and save a possible headache.

Of course, it depends what visa you are coming on.
If it is a visa where you have to leave the country physically every 30/60/90 days then it will last for the full year!! :D
Like most things in Thailand, it is 'horses for courses' & you should be aware of what applies in your particular circumstances rather than believing that only 1 set of circumstances apply for everyone.. :D

If your going for the bike license ,you may as well get the car license at the same time , most people go out to the department on the Khon Kaen highway , it's easy ,

When I renewed both my license's last year it was at AEK, so AFIK they do both.

Do AEK actually issue new licenses now??
I thought that they only issued follow on replacements??

You will need the dreaded free approval letter from Udon Immigration (that usually costs 500 baht :D ) as well. You will need to sit through the 1 hour driving instruction video as well. They only run them at 8 a.m. & 1 p.m.

The expiration date is 1 year (set in your home country) the validity for driving in Thailand is 90 days (set in Thailand)

The best place to go is the DLT head office in Non Soong, about 5km south of Udon on the road to Khon Kaen
For 1 licence you need

Passport +copy
Medical certificate 100 Baht or less
Photos
Residents cart from immigration 500 Baht no receipt get it immediately or free and wait up to a week.
IDP ( probably with national licence) +copy
You will get a 2 year temporary license or licenses
For both car and bike just copy all the above, don't tell immigration that you are going to get 2 licences or they will charge double.

Cost about 100 per licence

Or Go to smart drive and pay 5,000 +

AFIK AEK will renew both car and bike, I don't know if they will do new ones.
So far I've never had to sit through the videos, new licence in Non Song, renewed in AEK.

5 year full licence
