Lao Railway Progress

Post by FrazeeDK » July 27, 2017, 6:14 pm

this is an official Lao government release so take it with a grain of salt.. But, construction is underway with tunnel drilling continuing apace and a call out for 7,000 Lao workers.. As this project moves forward I think it will be an incentive for construction to get going on this side of the river.. After all, the terrain is far easier in Thailand than in Lao which will have 167 bridges and 75 tunnels in its 417km length from the Chinese border to Vientiane. If the Chinese companies constructing the railway are true to form it should be finished on time at the end of 2021.. Eventually you'll be able to hop a high speed passenger train in Udon and be in Kunming China within a day..

That might aswell take their time as the Thai side won't be ready until the year 2121 and any cargo crossing into Thailand will be confiscated and lost.anyway swampy will be underwater by then.well done to Lao though for showing the way.i don't see them having a problem finding workers either, now that Thailand has just robbed a load of workers and thrown them out of the country.this place is truely la la land.

Railway Construction in China to support the Kunming-Vientiane railway project from south of Kunming to the Lao border continues apace. It receives minimal international news coverage. This tallest railway bridge in the world on the route is fairly amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoOoOGIJo2U

Here's an RFA update on construction in Laos from several days ago. Its mostly a rehash of previous news releases. http://www.rfa.org/english/news/laos/hi ... 43941.html

All articles say the Chinese will have the entire Kunming to Vientiane project done by 2021. The progress here in Thailand seems quite slow but the terrain is significantly easier to deal with than in Laos so I'd reckon they can dilly-dally around for another year and still have it all done to link up with the Lao segment by 2021.

Lots of progress on the railway construction between Korat to Saraburi to Bkk with an off shoot South , 24 hrs per day hundreds upon hundreds of cranes , cement trucks etc etc let alone workers in their thousands ... raised platform work underway in KK as well ... now its the joining up the dots to connect it all together that will take time .

Im guessing NO way completed in 3 years nearer 30 ...i may be wrong .

How long due you reckon it will take before they realise that the railway in Laos is a different gauge to the one they are building in Thailand :-$

Yes, the Chinese rail system is primarily standard gauge and not the 1 meter gauge now used in Thailand. The construction mentioned a couple of strings above is the expansion of the State Railway of Thailand double track project and improved 1 meter gauge railway that already exists. In KK they are indeed elevating it as they are also doing in Khorat.

The planned standard gauge system that will connect with the Chinese rail system in Nong Khai has officially "broken ground" but no substantive work has been accomplished yet. I believe all contracts are signed by other administrative issues have arisen..

Yes china is leading the world in fast track building projects in many countries now, but at what cost, alas the statistic of injuries and deaths along the way will never be revealed.

Is this another example of: China setting ‘debt trap’ for developing nations with loans they CAN'T repay:
CHINA has been accused of manipulating developing countries with cheap large loans so it can build a lucrative transport network across the world and become an even bigger economic power house.

well, the Thais at least initially didn't get the "cheap" loans they wanted from the Chinese. The Thais also didn't roll over for the Chinese request/demand to have commercial rights along the railway. As I hear it, the Lao granted the Chinese 50 meters either side of the railway that's under construction for Chinese run commercial development and I think its a 50 year grant...
