I guessed Thailand had had its day last year but I was Scoffed at. Figures don't lie and we are seeing more and more house for sales being advertised. The tourism sector is in decline with most resorts admitting there 30 0r more percent down with little chance of recovery. Hotel company's have admitted they are still building new ones realising they do not have the tourists to fill them. Even here in Udon the realists must have seen the decline in visitors. TAT did not listen or take up any advice and now they are crying and moaning about the fall of Tourism. The greed and Scams have now caught up with them.
Who knows what to believe.
same as it ever was to my eye.
Meanwhile the Isan people go on living their lives as normal.
I don't see them panicked or worried about the current situation.
My Thai mother in law is a hard working lady but is having a tough time, 2 rice fields. One failed because of flooding, the other because of lack of water. She also has some rubber trees, 13 baht per kilo now as opposed to 45 before. The prices of everything has risen a lot and I think the poorer rural Thais are not doing so well.

Izzix, thanks for doing the research and coming up with those numbers. Venezuela is calling after all.

Why would I, Vlad? I am content living in Toronto and Khon Kaen. You are one of the people who wants to ditch Thailand and explore paradise further afield. Furthermore, I was suggesting a place like Dacca in Bangladesh as a place you might want to set up shop for awhile, but Islamabad in Pakistan, as you suggest, might be a better option for you

Sadly a fair majority of them are starting to become quite worried about how they are going to live. Household debt for vehicles, fertilisers etc. is growing at an unsustainable rate. The offspring working in the factories down south are having their working hours cut due to lower exports (just wait until they close and open up again in Vietnam and Myanmar) so less money coming up to the parents. Farm selling prices seem to be falling mostly with input prices growing. Condominium sales are dropping to less than Off Plan prices and it will not be long before large amounts of defaults will really have an impact on that side of the economy as well. The current rise in value of the Baht against all other currencies might help the military get cheaper tanks, submarines etc from China but somehow I don't see the increase of Indian tourists as the answer to Thailand's imminent financial meltdown. I will be staying at least for the foreseeable future due to family commitments, just fastening the seat belt a wee bit tighter.

Congratulations! You are correct: 'Dhaka formerly known as Dacca, is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. It is one of the largest and most densely populated cities in the world....' Thanks for the update.

We all make grammatical mistakes, and I am certainly no exception, so this is just a reminder that the word you want is, 'isn't' not 'isnt', and you need a period between Map and Maybe. Finally, you might want to place a question mark at the end of your last sentence. And, you require a comma...never mind, I don't want to be a grammar Maoist. 555

Tales of doom and gloom for the Thai economy have been around for as long as Marc Faber has been predicting doom and gloom during much of the longest stock market rally in history.
All that debt, yet I continue to see a good many red plates plying the streets of Udon. My poor neighbors who bought second hand trucks many years ago still have them. The only restaurants I've seen close up shop in the past year have been ones that didn't stand a chance due to poor service/food quality. There's been no decrease in flights into/out of Udon. The 3000+ condo units that were built several years ago......none have failed....although many units remain empty. Bangkok Hospital, on a Wednesday this week....packed. Nirvana housing development starting at 20+ million. Prime Square near UD Town slowly filling up. UD facebook pages full of help wanted ads. Tops just doubled in size. No signs of any of the 4th floor restaurants in Central shutting down.
Meanwhile, I was listening to a podcast today......an expat in Vietnam complaining how his internet service was out 4 times in the morning.
Time to renew the prescription on my glasses, the pink tint is showing signs of wear.

Cambodia now has a straight forward retirement visa, up to a year. No reporting or income requirements. From my reading it is easy to get if 55+.
That's what I was told (no reporting or income requirements) when I was there

Tend to agree with part of It, I haven't noticed any real change around the area that I live in just south of Udon Thani. Most of my Thai neighbors seem to be going about business as normal, no fire sales on land around me. Also have noticed, a number of new Thai style houses being constructed around my area.

I do see that a number of Expats seem to be struggling to sell their Properties in the Udonmap Classifieds. Probably because the Thai's don't have big amounts of spare cash sitting around and or don't have access to those larger amounts through a Thai Bank, these days. I think the Thai Banks may have tightened up on their Loan's and want better and more collateral these days. Plus fewer Expat buyers around, given most like to build their own new homes to their style. Don't think I would want to be a Expat trying to sell his home at this time. :-k :-k

Did a trip to Bangkok two weeks ago. Earliest morning Thai Smile flight (7.10am) was packed from Udon to Bangkok. Same for the return at 11.10am. No shortage of people flying Thai Smile and they are one of the more expensive airlines

Maybe people are just more careful on how and when they spend their money these days :-k :-k

I have to correct you yet again Lan i'm not " Ditching " Thailand as you put it. I simply made a decision to try another Country for a Holiday as I still have time and a little Pension Pot that allows me to go wherever. I have many many friends in Udon and the temperature is good for me but in my opinion it has become expensive now and has lost its appeal for a tourist destination, unless you have deep pockets. So instead of offering me advice on where I should go maybe you should go to Bangladesh and give a trip report.

Sound advice. Would a next-door-neighbour such as Myanmar do?

Myself and two of my friends used to make regular trips to Sihanoukville. Very laid back with pristine beaches and prices were much cheaper than Thailand. Before the last trip we were warned that the Chinese had completely taken over Sihanoukville. Of course we had to see for ourselves. We stayed in an expensive Chinese run hotel the first night. It was absolutely filthy. We went to a large nice looking restaurant to eat. No one waited on us. A guy finally came and told us it is for Chinese only. There are huge casinos on every block.

We were lucky to find a taxi driver who spoke very good English. He was not happy and said the government had stolen all the land and sold it to the Chinese. We told him we wanted a place like Sihanoukville used to be. He took us about 8 kilometers down the coast and even there a huge area had been bulldozed and another huge hotel casino was being built there. We will never go back.

Phnom Penh was still OK but it is also changing. Prices there are still cheaper than Thailand but it is not worth the travel expense and hassle of traveling. We have already toured Siem Reap and the temple complexes. They are spectacular and well worth seeing but we have been there and done that. There will be no more Cambodia trips for us.
Another example of the Chinese cancer spreading.

Lots of the folks on these flights are local or central Government workers. Some in Uniform and some not. Depends on what/why they are going to Bangkok. Not many rice or sugar cane farmers on these flights.

Having lived in Thailand for a long time and being ripped off by the dental and medical profession for a fair amount of money and that does not count the everyday rip offs and having the gloss wash off a long time ago I am now living back in my home country and pleased to be back. As far as I am concerned Thailand is a good place (sometimes I am not too sure about that either) to visit spend your money and get out of there before you have to worry about visas and 90day reporting.
I used to deal a lot with hospitals in Thailand. I had various health issues and never felt ripped off. Depends what your home country is Vlad I mean Rod.
