for minor things, if your village has a clinic, they can help sometimes. i got my tetanus shots at village clinic, which they didn't stock the meds, so i had to come back. that is a good thing, because some meds need to be kept at certain temps and i'm sure many there are not, as it hot and not ac. but have frig for some things. series of 3 shots, all of 50 baht. then stopped a couple times for extreme minor things and was not charged.

This expressed idea of banpaeng's is generating information I've been wanting to see! Here at the Western coast of Canada, I have not had a family physician since the 1970s. That practictioner has long ago Retired. So I have only sought medical attention when visited with an accident, or some extreme malady; and this latter only occurred once--a wretched cough that was a combination of a severe viral and becterial assault that had my throat ulcerated, and my entire tracheal passage inflammed. Oh!--and in 1975--I did have my appendix rupture, but I took an entire day before seeking help. They said I barely made it--and I was still suggesting waiting till the morning to see how I was doing as they were wheeling me off to surgery!

I made a couple of attempts a few years ago to try and align myself with a physician just for physical purposes, for I'll be 60 in October, 2009. But no one is interested--they're all booked solid with current accounts. So it's a matter of walk-in clinics, or not at all. I chose not at all! I'm not interested in a stranger acquainting himself with me in this fashion. And I'm a bit picky. Believe it or not, I'd rather have a female physician for this sort of thing--if it's necessary! When it comes to intimate examinations, I'd rather not have a man doing them. So maybe I'll die off, who knows?

As for dentists, I last attended one in the Summer of 1975--oddly, the same year as my emergency appendectomy! I know I need some attention, but I am not bothered with toothaches and such, and I brush rather stringently enough to know that I haven't any gum disease problems. I would just like a few fillings, at least. But I am reluctant to pay the price here. Besides, I've built up a small dread of dentists since my 1975 abstinence! Having the sort of attention Paul described would really "sugar-coat" the situation and lure me right in!

So keep up the recommendations, folks! If you've someone of note, then share whomever it is.

And please don't stint on the cautions, either.

Thanks from all of us hopeful 'soon to be's!

If your wife or girlfriend is expecting i can whole heartedly recommend Dr Trong Maneewattana at the Ek Udon.A first class doctor and a good surgeon and the best bedside manner of any doctor i have ever met.A lot of Thai doctors can be distant and seem disinterested. He's on the hospital board and yet is a softly spoken, compassionate man.Great facilities at the hospital too and enough room in a VIP room to fit in the twenty odd relatives that will want to be there on the big day.All in all last time came to 30,000 Baht,as i said that is with a VIP room for three days.

One of the positive things about having children here is you can decide whether the wife has a caesarian bearing in mind the size of a farang/Thai baby in relation to the mother.A very dear friend has just had a baby with his Thai wife in the UK and they refused a caesarian even though the baby was going to be huge. What a nightmare. He said it was like a horror film with blood on the walls .

Thanks Businessman. That is a very good recommendation. That also another stone in my theory above that most meds can be handled and only trying to prevent the big one as Fred Sanford said with the insurance.

The Ek Udon deals with the insurance companies directly and you dont have to fork out first.

Correct Businessman, being as I have high blood pressure (easily controlled by meds) they ruled out all circulatory problems including the heart. I ask my doc about that and she told me that rules out a good portion of the universe. Kind of baffleing to me. Oh well I found one that did make since.

Hi guys, just thought I"d put my two cents worth in. Two years ago I had a huge cist in my right armpit and it was being agrivated by the heat, so I went to Sau Paulo hospital on the recomendation of a friend. The Doctor took me to the treatment room gave me locals around the cist, he cut it out and cleaned it and then stiched it up and covered it with gause. Total time from start to finish 45mins, Total cost including meds for one week Bht1,300. In oz it would have cost me $50 for a referal from my family Doc and at least 6 Months wait time for a specialist. The cost would have been around $500. I think that puts it in purspective dont you.
