Bowel Cancer.

Was due for a Bowel Cancer Screening Test (being 60) and thought the Govt had forgotten me. So, early this month went out and purchased a Screening Kit and sent it in for analysis. Last week came back positive for blood. Yesterday went for Colonoscopy and they found two polyps, one of which was 20mm in size and about to become Cancerous. Doctor said I just dodged a Bullet as they removed the Polyps and don't need another screening for 12 months. This morning got up for first Bowel movement and filled the Toilet with Blood. Went to Docs first thing and just need rest for a couple of days. The last screening was five years ago (which is the norm) so just a Heads up to all you Guys not to be complacent .....

Prevention is always a good thing. Glad that I have the means to get it done as often as necessary.

Don't mean to be pedantic but, I think you mean "detection", as "prevention" would mean not getting the polyps in the first place.

Have any readers had a colonoscopy in Udon? I understand there are some risks. And about how much? I never had one in Thailand.

Did gov supplied bowel cancer test and no negative result.

On routine visit to my doctor where he suggested a colonoscopy me being 58 at the time.

They a found a number of polyps and removed / tested them - nothing malignant, but specialists said to have a colonoscopy every two years from now on (as nearing 60), he also said what he removed can turn bad if left for years.

Lesson for Aardvark - have regular colonoscopy from now on as advised by doctor - the bowel tests dont reveal as the camera. Worth the money and effort - they remove what they see on the spot and chances are more will return.

I suppose for me, not getting the pre-cancerous polyps in the first place would be "prevention" but whatever.

I have had colonoscopy twice in Bangkok Hospital Udon.
The doctor travels from Bangkok each week and attends Udon at weekend for consultation and procedure.
Everything went fine and results as expected.
I thought the drugs administered to knock me out were a little longer lasting than I have previously experienced in UK but I may be mistaken.
Everything done professionally and to my satisfaction.

Like Aardvark I had several polyps, thankfully non cancerous , removed each time , however I had no passing of blood.

Important check up once you get over 50 or have cancer in your family.

Perhaps many of you may know an American expat who had a routine colonoscopy at one of the private hospitals here in Udon within the past 6 months. The attending physician caused a rupture in his colon and he wound up having to be cut from his breast bone to his naval and being hospitalized for over three months and was on death's edge several times with a sustained infection.

I just got word from my own sister back in the States that she went for a routine colonoscopy and came out with intense diarrhea and nausea for months until she nearly went into renal failure from a severe bacterial infection as a result of the procedure.

I'm sure these are probably extremely rare instances, but they could be more common than we think because everyone keeps a tight lip on the procedures that go bad. The research may say otherwise, but who believes the research these days with all the corruption worldwide in the medical and pharmaceutical industries...and most all other industries for that matter.

For now I think I'll pass on the camera up the ol' bum and take my chances! Just my opinion!!

I had one in 1993 in a clinic opposite the Chevron Hotel in St.Kilda it was a day surgery full of recliner chairs from memory there was probably about 20 guys out like a light after the procedure one in one out at the time they had no idea and neither did I later found out that I suffer from IBS.

A very good money spinner from the production line never had one since.

I like so many others worry about the prospect of a cancerous growth inside o pf oneself and thought Ok take a test, which I did and lo and behold found that the test showed a predisposition to a possibility that I may have a problem.

before I went down the path of having something shoved up my rear passage I sought expert medical advice from my family ( all doctors ). The bottom line is that most of the time the blood results show up things so small that a colonscopy would never see and you have had an invasive procedure which if NOT administered 100% correctly can lead to major problem ( as has been discussed here ) .
The advice was to monitor ones solids and any major change in colour over a period is a warning for another medical check.
If over 200 hundred years opf medical knowledge states that you avoid avoid invasive procedures, than one listens , here one finds that they are too damn quick to recommend further examinations because most places need your cash.
As an after thought I went for another blood test and the result came back within the limits and no problem, only one week after the first....go figure.

Developed Countries , would generally use a sedative anaesthetic , such as midazolam, ( hypnotic etc )

Not normal to be fully unconscious.

Day Surgery, generally unless pathology/ radiology pre tests indicate otherwise.
