It's always been a bit hit and miss in our moobahn. I reckon I have only ever seen the local health authorities noisy misting pickup twice in maybe 8 years? Can't recall if it was a particularly bad dengue season or otherwise. Bit of lottery but I know our Baygon purchases have increased as we douse our place twice a week.

We had a visit from people from the Tesaban this morning, they walked round our house and land (4 Rai) checking that there were no stagnant pools of water etc. Told the missus that misting was going to start next week.

i am wondering what you guys use to avoid Moskito bites.
this year - all 3 products that i used so far do not seem to protect me anymore.

.
it appears as if these nasty little buggers got used to it and are now immune to the smell.
...and the guy with the smoke-gun visited our village already some weeks ago. no big effect so far. he might have to come again.

btw:
don't joke about it.
i had already 2 of the 4 dengue types.
so i know what to expect if caught by the dengue virus.
this isn't funny at all.
can easily be lethal - or at least expensive (3 days at AEK for about 15'000 THB).

Samual,
You need to find something that has at least 10 percent DEET in it for up to 2 hour protection. For longer, maybe 4 hours plus need at least 24 percent.

We are p;erhaps forgetting that over the previous centuries the Aedes Mosquito ( it carries Dengue ) has adapted to live in or near to human habitation .
1 Does not make a sound when flying ( well in fact it does but not audible to humans )
2. Loves to be indoors any building not outside so much .
3 Can lay eggs in damp places and they can survive up to a year waiting for more dampness to allow them to hatch .
So indoors, potted plants, bathrooms and other places often wet/damp are possible breeding grounds, or to put it mor pointedly a place where they lay eggs.

So apart from the outside areas ensuring stagnant pools or wet depressions being kept clean or dry, inside Plant saucers, keep them clean and washed , bathrooms kept clean and dry ( if possible ) other areas, especially in the kitchen also clean and dry.
These are sneaky chaps again it is the female that sucks blood, ( sort of reminds you of our species ) .

Cleanliness is next to Godliness they say, add also next to being free from Dengue as well hopefully.

We were 'fogged' today. Spoke to the missus and asked why the overgrown empty lands to our East and South were not done as well. Big Boss says no one live there so no need to do. Hope the mossies know not to flyover the fence lines. TIT

Re: dengue fever - vaccine

Post by tamada » October 7, 2023, 8:33 am

Bumping this one: specifically if anyone knows if Oodorn's public or private hospitals carry any anti-dengue vaccines?

I sent a message to BHP and awaiting any response but if any member knows they do, or are dropping by a hospital on "regular business" and can inquire? (I'm not at home right now)

Reading on the AN forum that there are now two vaccines approved for use in Thailand. "The first one, known as Dengvaxia® was licensed in 2017 and the new one called Qdenga® was just available this year (2023)."

Thanks Doodoo. Some subsequent posts in the AN thread I mentioned suggest that the existing Dengvaxia vaccine can be problematic to both those who have never contracted dengue before AND those that have. The former may have worse than normal symptoms when they do get dengue and the latter may have a rougher time due to their being 4 different strains of dengue and being infected by a different strain from the first rodeo. Hardly fits the description of being a dengue prophylaxis IMHO so will stick to eradicating standing water and using 'Off!'

I know for a fact why some call it break bone fever. I had it years ago and it was the most miserable experience of my life. My girlfriend (at that time) sister was a nurse. She took one look at me, checked my fever and told me I needed to go to the hospital. At the hospital the doctor asked me what I was taking for pain relief. I told him aspirin. He said that I was lucky that I had no areas of blood loss because if I did, I would have bled to death.

If you are unlucky enough to catch this disease, DON'T take aspirin. It will make your blood thinner than the fever. I remarked that at least I wouldn't catch it again and was told that I COULD indeed catch it again, there is no immunity.
