STEP UP Stair climbing test can predict your risk of dying from heart disease, experts say

Can you hike up three flights of stairs without stopping? If not, you could be in trouble
By Nick McDermott, Health Editor

Spanish scientists said middle-aged adults who can walk up three floors without needing a break have good heart function.

It means their chances of cancer death fell by around half compared to those with the worst performance, according to a new study.

And their risk of being killed by other causes fell by two-thirds.

Lead researcher Dr Jesús Peteiro, a cardiologist at University Hospital A Coruña in Spain, said: “If you can walk very fast up three floors of stairs without stopping, or fast up four floors without stopping, you have good functional capacity.

Good news since I very often use the stairs in hotels on my frequent tours.

Thanks for that info.

Obviously i was not on that test , as i could run up 3 flights of stairs ,at the time i was power walking regular , guess what BOOM heart attack while doing nothing , age 46 , So trust me when i say Doctors are not always right ,i now try to check everything they say when treating me ,i have found here in Thailand ,rarely do they check the medication has adverse effects with other medication they are prescribing you , i've caught them out out several times , even to the extent the hospital pharmacy is issuing Inhalers with the wrong medication attached

"And their risk of being killed by other causes fell by two-thirds."

Does that mean you have a better chance of jumping off the motorbike before the pick up or truck or bus hits you?

I somehow suspect your chances of a severe heart attack a split second before being knocked of your bike does not depend on how many flights of stairs you can run up [-( =;

I don't understand why the word "hike" was used. They appear to be talking about walking up 3 flights of stairs. Hiking suggests to me a long walk probably with boots and a rucksack and probably over uneven terrain.

If you are talking about walking, I go up and down three flights of stairs many times every day where I work. I had a quadruple heart bypass just over two years ago. It is good exercise.
