I generally love all things 'competition' and all things high-tech. I'm also of the opinion that dinosaurs died out long ago and if you're trying to live like one in today's world, you'll have your work cut out for you.
So when I read the article today about Uber taking on the taxi mafias of Europe, I had little sympathy for drivers who insist that the archaic rules must remain the same. Likewise, when I walk along some of the downtown streets in Udon and talk with shop owners who lament the lack of shoppers, I can't help but think they're from the same dinosaur mold as the European taxi drivers.....still doing business the way things were 20-30-40 years ago.....no price tags, no returns, no parking, our-way-or-the-highway sort of practices. When I can, I love to do business with a few of them.....but more often than not, it's easier to buy exactly what I need at a major retailer....fixed price, easy to return if defective, easy to park, etc.
I seem to recall conversations past about the impending demise of books, records, CDs, cassettes.......eventually they all lose out to whatever is easier/cheaper to use. Sign of the times!

Up to 12,000 London " Proper Taxis " Black Cabs held a Demo in London yesterday, Bringing the capital to a standstill..It was'nt about Uber in the main ( Only part of it was ) But about the TFL Transport for London who are SUPPOSED to control the Taxi Service,& The Touts ( Illegal Mini Cabs ) who tout with impunity & Get away with it,Do you know that there are an average of 20 Sexual Assaults per WEEK Carried out by these ILLEGAL Minicabs in London,These figures were given by The Metropolitan Police....
Now the Uber part of it was that they are PRIVATE Hire cars ( Unlicenced ) that operate with a Phone-App that is in effect A Meter, ( Private Hire vehicles are NOT Allowed to have a meter ) And at busy times which they call a " Burst " they have a " Surge " feature which will charge the passenger anything up to 5 Times the normal fare ( that a Black Cab would charge ) Some of the fares charged by Uber have been say a 15.00 pound fare has charged the passengers card 80.00 pound,You cannot overide this as Uber is " A Cashless " app & you have to pay by CC,It's this meter part of the app.which tells the driver how much to charge the card ( Also the drivers have to use a Sat-Nav and frequently get LOST) ....So next time you want a Taxi in Bangkok,Use the Uber App...I Gaurantee YOU will NOT be a Happy Chappie...& You certainly WON'T love Uber or " Competition " ever again....
Going back to the London Demo, Even the Paris Taxi Drivers supported it well & sent over 100 Paris Taxis on it ( All their Fuel cost were met by The LTDA ( London Taxi Drivers Association )
You have now probably guessed I'm an Ex Cab Driver ( Although NOT London ) and feel very strongly against " A Bunch of Rich ( Cowboy ) Yanks Stealing a living that London Cab drivers have worked so hard to make a living from ( They are part owned by Google & Microsoft ), Do you know it can take between 3 & 4 Years to Pass The Knowledge required to obtain The London Green Badge ( For ALL London Taxi Drivers ) to be able to drive a Cab to make their Living..Have a Look at it on http://www.youtube.com..... The Knowledge "
BTW.The Uber London App is run from a database in HOLLAND,& They Along with a few fellow American Companies ( ie: Starbucks ) DO NOT pay any income tax to HMRC in The U.K......Why Not

I am pleased there is competion , black cabs have had there own way for to long .
They can shout and scream all they like this is 2014 and we all want value for money.
People are not using them for good reason , just like we do not have milk delivered any more, times
have changed . You have to adapt and creating chaos in London will not make you case any better.

I can't speak for the accuracy of the studies....but there are a few that show the economics of using a service like Uber versus owning a car in large cities like SF. People are obviously using their services......and with a few other similar companies coming on line, prices are expected to drop considerably.
I'm not anti-cab......I'm merely anti-anti-change. The librarians who insisted on learning the dewey decimal system long after computers made the system obsolete......the shopkeepers who insist on keeping a paper copy of all their transactions despite having a computer system at their fingertips.....or the music companies who bucked the transition to digital streaming.

I Agree there are SOME greedy Cabbies,But you have the right as a passenger to 1, Tell him to engage the meter Or Tell Him to Politely GO AWAY in Short Jerky Movements ,2, Choose ANY Cab on the rank ,3, The Actual fare from LHR to Euston Station SHOULD Be NO more than 70.00 even in peak hour traffic,A Straight run in ( No Traffic ) Would be approx 60.00 ...OR 4, Get The BUS....plumbers wrote:The last time i was at heathrow a greedy cabbie wanted £90 , i got a bus £7.50 ,
