The effects of social media? You should also see what goes on in business meetings these days. People continue to use their laptops and smart phones while people are presenting or speaking, which I think is bad manners.arjay wrote:I was told about the same thing happening at a Xmas lunch back in the UK, no one speaking and all the young children keying away at their smartphones & tablets at the meal table! The art of conversation is dying.

Manners are not a strong point here they put it down to their culture, but I agree E just plain damn bad manners inconsiderate I call it.

We move in different circles KP. I find the Thais very strong on manners and think they are very considerate. I thought you were a teacher? Outside of class I almost always found the Thai students very polite and charming. And the Thai teachers the same. And in class the students were pretty good as well.
The Thais I know in NZ are wonderfully polite. Grengjai mahk mahk. They are a wonderful people. That's why you older goats are over there. If they were right bastards, why stay in Thailand?

In a disciplined setting true the children are polite and well mannered as are adults when it suits them, but you only have to watch and look and generally their road manners suck, their shopping manners suck, generally Thais are selfish hence the problem at any event where they try to get as near as possible to avoid walking further than 2-3 feet. They talk during meetings if not a phone and they generally disregard all and any law they do not like whether it will effect others or not. While they act politely , if they could be seen , outside that environment they are not that polite .
However these minuses are outweighed by many many other attributed they have so they are in some cases a minor irritation.

The idea in the link below is sure to be a big idea in restaurants in the US. Thailand has a pen/pencil version of this idea at a few restaurants......one being the popular pork noodle soup restaurant just before the Jiffy gas station on the Nongkai Hwy....another being the Dom Mua franchise chain (Central and across from UD Town).

Why not?
yes they are communicating with their friends and it is mostly dribble at best but not, face to face social intercourse, I think that is the whole issue.
And if you think all teenagers are doing is talking niceties you are mistaken, after what I recently discovered what the phone was use for between 2 young teenage girls. Porn is the word and very explicit at that. Mum has had a serious talk to said 15yr girl. Doubt you can block movie sending on smart phones? Doubt it will stop her either.
I nearly blushed
