If you did that in UK Shado you would not be two steps from the SUV before realising .......... 200 people either running for cover or "hitting the deck" in a couple of milliseconds would give you a clue there might be something not quite right

200 people would be about 30% of the town's entire population where I banked. Now that I'm older and have had a few "worldly" experiences I look back fondly on those simpler, less sophisticated times. I do get a glimpse of them occasionally here in Thailand though.

For some reason, I've long thought it was the "Hoover Brush Man", but actually it's the Fuller Brush Man. And apparently, some of those who had the job 60+ years ago were known to dabble in exploits with the customer base.
The Thai version is still alive......but mostly relegated to peddling their wares on city streets. Tough job!

Thought you might like to see how the monks in Issan manage to spread merit amongst their flock in such a widely spread area, where walking between two farms could take half an hour.

Oh Buddha, they'd need to be very careful with their robes. I understand that some (or all?) of them don't wear underwear.

I was thinking that beats the burning sensation going down steel slides in my younger days. But then I saw what looks like a snake head or stick protruding from the soil further down the track.
In any case, I'd have gotten a severe whacking if I came home after a day at the dirt track like that.

Unfortunately, I don't have a photo. Money delivery guy walks into 7-11 in Nongwahsaw with a sack of coins.....I'd guess 20ish pounds. All the coins are in small bags, not the rolls that we (used to) use in the US. The guy hands the bag and a receipt to the clerk.....now with a forlorn face. She begins counting the coins in each small bag (without removing the coins). The delivery guy has to wait until the counting is done and the receipt is signed.
Back in 1960, my oldest brother got a summer job in the local small town Dairy Queen (back when it was just ice-cream products). On his second day, the owner gave my 16 year old brother the keys and told him to close up shop himself and take the days receipts to the night deposit box at the bank. That's always stuck with me as a benchmark.......can't say I've seen a match yet in Thailand.

Sorry about the poor quality of the photo.....you'll have to take my word for it:
Driving to Kilo 18 from town yesterday, a truck with its rear tail lowered, a cloth covered casket in the bed with one man lying on each side. A large stick of incense burning near the coffin. No signs of "Kerry Express" on the truck, so I'll assume it was family bringing someone home from the morgue.
Definitely not the sort of thing you'll see back in the US.

20ish years ago, our neighborhood ka-fay yen lady died in a motorcycle accident. We offered to purchase the coffin, and picked it up from a large funeral shop in town. I remember the odd feeling of driving home with the coffin in the bed of our truck.

coming back along the Ring Road a few years ago towards the Sakon Highway from the Nong Khai Highway a songtaew was in front of us. It had about 8 soldiers in field uniforms on the benches and what was obviously a body that was wrapped tightly in a shroud in the bed of the truck. I assumed that perhaps a soldier had died, been shipped home by air and soldiers from his unit were taking him home..

Sorry no photos just a tale my wife told me of when her Thai husband who died 20 years ago.
Apparently he died in a hospital in Khon Kaen. they wanted to bring his body back for cremation in Udon, a standard type van wanted 6k for the job which at the time she couldn't afford so a kind sole working in the hospital arranged for him to be transferred as a living patient in an ambulance, so his body was placed in one with a respirator to his mouth and accompanied by a nurse and sent back for 2k.with her sitting with him .Surely only in thailand .!

The mother of this boy let him put his hair down while he danced to some Isaan music at the Nongwahsaw mobile market today. Otherwise, he keeps his hair put up in a top knot. It's quite rare to see boys sporting this hair style these days......a lot of customs/beliefs into the hows/whys of parents letting their kid's hair grow out like this.
I'd like to see the ceremony when a young boy's head is shaved of his top knot.......the traditional barber isn't called to duty for this kind of a haircut! http://ich.culture.go.th/index.php/th/i ... s/466--m-s
