Agree 100% Banjo.
OK maybe I am biased on the England in 2018, but Russia has to be the most stupid country to pick out of all the qualifiers. The cynical might say that the FIFA executive will be well at home with the Russian Mafia that will contol it though.
Same with 2022. They pick the most stupid option. One might think that money played a huge role in this decision as well. Japan & Korea held a decent enough joint finals not to be discounted singly. Australia could have hosted a great event as well.
I am just so surprised at the outcome & saddened as well....

Bob,

Awful just awful. Everyone knows fifa is corrupt and when you put one corrupt organisation with another corrupt organisation (Russian Government who according to yesterdays reports are nothing but a branch of the Mafia) then you have peas in a pod! An absolute disgrace! Im sure the players arent too happy about it either with long Journeys between matches etc! I was at the world cup in 94 in the States and I was looking forward to going in 2018. Not a hope now! Can you imagine whats going to happen to the thousands of foreigners who go to follow their country? There will Robbings, beatings and most probably people will loose their lives!

It certainly is an appalling outcome Bob and one that will now publicly question and possibly test the validity of FIFA's governance. These decisions appear to have quickly created a strong feeling of disenchantment throughout the international football world other than in Russia and Qatar. I see Roman Abramovich was like a Cheshire Cat after the announcement and the Vodka would no doubt be flowing amongst the Ruskies. England were by far a better proposition for 2018 - Jack the blind miner could see that! Prince William, David Dean and a proud footballing nation are gutted.

And Qatar for 2022. Do they even have a football team in a nation of less than 2 million people and about half the size of Tasmania in area (that's small)? The host nation do need to field a side :-" What they do have is immense wealth generated from oil and gas reserves, high temperatures and lethal scorpions abound. Airconditioned stadiums has been mooted - surely a joke. The USA and Australian bids were better and more suitably placed to host the event. Bill Clinton looked aghast on hearing the announcement so he'll be on the turps to get his head around this ridiculous decision. The Australian bid was way too cheezy and simply could not project the necessary revenue that FIFA desires. It's all about money :-k

The voting was utterly astounding as follows
FIFA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE VOTING
2018 World Cup

Round 1: England 2 votes, Netherlands/Belgium 4 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 9 votes (as no absolute majority was reached, the candidate with least amount of votes, England, was eliminated)

Round 2: Netherlands/Belgium 2 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 13 votes (Russia obtained an absolute majority)

2022 FIFA World Cup

Round 1: Australia 1 vote, Japan 3 votes, Korea Republic 4 votes, Qatar 11 votes, USA 3 votes (Australia eliminated)

Round 2: Japan 2 votes, Korea Republic 5 votes, Qatar 10 votes and USA 5 votes (Japan eliminated)

Round 3: Korea Republic 5 votes, Qatar 11 votes, USA 6 votes (Korea Republic eliminated)

Round 4: Qatar 14 votes and USA 8 votes (Qatar obtained an absolute majority)
England and Australia both eliminated respectively in the 1st Rounds is nonsensical. The FIFA Executive Committee has branded itself to be equivalent to that of a Banana Republic.

In Seth BLABBERS words 'England had the best Terchnical Bid' They also have the best Stadiums by far. Russia currently only have one Stadium that is fit to hold a world cup match in. With all these facts it seems blatently obvious to me that corruption is the only answer. How the hell could England only get two votes, of whicj one came from the England representative. I mean we all know it. It really makes me mad, there nothing worse the corruption! In Seth BLABBERS case absolute power has absolutely corrupted. Disgraceful!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the World cup serves no positive purpose anyway,so Russia and Q are welcome to it!I think a World Championship of competing professionals has merit, but Nationalistic fervor over sports games is rediculous,IMO!
Keep the professionalim on the field of play ,rather than the backroom!

You shouldnt be too surprised.....
The Sunday Times and Panorama exposed FIFA's officials for what they are.....a bunch of corrupt, cheating old men.
That was the end of Englands hopes I'm afraid......just 2 votes ! [-X
With Platini and Josef Sepp ----- Blatter in charge of FIFA we shouldnt have expected anything more.

Next time England can hope to host the competition is 2030 now. :(

This link gives details of the FIFA evaluation summary reports that were created to try & bring logic & reason, rather than emotion, corruption or financial benefits, to the decision.

As can be seen the two winners were actually bottom of both evaluations... :(

I have always said that Football is getting to money orientated for the good of the punters who watch it, we have overpaid arrogant, allegedly good players who do not seem able to play unless their p[ockets are being lined with cash, and now we have the so-called heads of International Football being seen as out of touch with the real world, with allegations of corruption and double standards enraging at least half of the football playing nations.
Is it not about time this game looked to its basics and treated it as a game for which people pay acceptable amounts of money to watch and also the players actually play good football.
Personally I am not surprised at the state the game has got into, too much money and very little talent. Commercialism and greed has ruined it. Good riddance

Strange turn of events.
Burden to quit as FA chairman after 2018 vote failure
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/9256772.stm

He is a former boss of mine & a thoroughly nice guy - maybe too nice, if anyone can be, for the business world.
I recognise that an important part of the role is liaison with Fifa, our global governing body," said Burden.

"I'm not prepared to deal with people whom I cannot trust and I've withdrawn my candidacy
Pretty damming words.

It looks like the cancellation of the Thailand match was not just an isolated gesture; the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has rescinded the offer of a free stay in the Dorchester for the 2012 Olympics for FIFA executives - I suspect that there could be quite a few more gestures such as this one until FIFA is seen to clean up its act.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson cancels Fifa hotel stay

Boris Johnson has withdrawn the offer of a free stay in London's exclusive Dorchester hotel for Fifa executives during the 2012 Olympics.

The Mayor of London had offered the free accommodation for Fifa president Sepp Blatter and his team.

But after Fifa's decision on Thursday's 2018 World Cup vote - which saw the England bid get just two votes out of a possible 22 - the offer was rescinded.

Russia was chosen to host the tournament instead.

Free hotel rooms for VIP guests are handed out by Locog, the Olympic organising committee.

Mr Johnson is understood to have discussed the issue with Locog chairman Sebastian Coe.

The mayor has not commented on the decision to cancel the free stay.

But in the aftermath of the defeat, Mr Johnson, who travelled to Zurich to personally lobby Fifa's executives, said the result was a "big blow and tremendously disappointing".

He added: "We put together a cracking bid, our technical specification was top-notch and our stadiums would have been packed to the rafters."

A senior government source has told the BBC that at least five executive committee members "personally assured" Prince William and David Beckham they would vote for the England bid, only to back other contenders in the first round.

The Qatar World Cup 2022 is hardly off the announcement pages and it is already causing further issues.
There has been a lot of discussion as to when the event will actually take place.
World Cups traditionally have always taken place during the Northern Hemispheres' summer months of June & July. It would appear that the weather conditions in Qatar in those months will be punishing in the extreme to the players & possibly to the older spectators as well. Indeed so much so that there has been discussions about moving the 2022 World Cup to the winter months.
This seems to me that if this information is true then it reflects hugely on the initial FIFA decision. As I have already said before the FIFA evaluations of the competitors placed Qatar bottom of the list.
Could those voting please explain exactly what criteria they used in coming to their decision?
As it was obviously different to the criteria of the evaluation process what is the point of that evaluation?
Can they also explain how they gave the competition to a place that would now appear to be completely unsuitable to run it when 3 other more suitable choices were available.

Despite these valid questions FIFA rumbles on as if everything is perfect. It is a corrupt & rotten organisation there to financially benefit its officials with that, rather than the interests of football, being its sole aim.

Couldn't wait any longer for you Bob. :D
Fresh bribery claims rock FIFA

World soccer governing body FIFA has been rocked by new allegations of corruption, with two members allegedly paid $1.5 million each to vote for Qatar instead of Australia to host the 2022 World Cup.

In an explosive session of a British parliamentary committee in the House of Commons, six members of FIFA's graft-tainted executive were accused of involvement in bribery before last year's votes to decide the 2018 and 2022 hosts.

Two members of the 24-man FIFA executive were suspended before last December's ballot for allegedly offering to sell their votes to undercover reporters from The Sunday Times.

British lawmaker Damian Collins said the hearing had now received evidence from the newspaper that FIFA vice-president Issa Hayatou from Cameroon and Jacques Anouma from the Ivory Coast received bribes of $1.5 million to back Qatar's 2022 bid..............

Well I thought it was rather ironic that while this was being announced & Lord Triesman was making his claims of corruption...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/9481461.stm
That Mr. Blatter in part of his 'hit list' for re-election announced this...
Fifa unveils anti-match fixing plan

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/13333791.stm

If you want to stop corruption anywhere then it must start at the very top & filter down. Starting at the bottom & attempting to work up is just a plain stupid idea & a waste of time & money. Mr. Blatter knows that as well as I but his re-election depends on the corrupt officials that he has happily helped put in place to get support.

FIFA is as corrupt a bunch of officials as will be found anywhere in the sporting world (& elsewhere for that matter). It needs a huge turnover in the officials, but that will not happen.
It defends/ignores all sorts of financial shenanigans by all the various authorities in Africa. Then threatens to suspend countries on the rare occasion that local Governments cannot ignore it any more & try and sort it out... :(

One of the members was the Thai minister of sport Bob he wanted England to play a friendly this year in Bangkok as long as the Thais got the TV rights, 1 wanted 2 half million pounds and 1 even wanted a knighthood, in return for there vote in our favour no surprise then that they voted against us, wonder what the rich sheiks in Doha offered them.

Post by DermotC » May 11, 2011, 7:27 pm

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson has suggested England could break away from Fifa if it does not address allegations of corruption within the organisation.
