When I saw these prices, I thought exactly that mash! ;)

I took the 100 gram price posted on the meat and multiplied by ten for the kg price. e.g. Wagyu 440 baht per 100 grams, so 4400 baht per kg.

CC Wagyu (though not ribeye) and Aussie striploin are GREAT values at your prices sir! :D \:D/

Yes, it will take them awhile to get up to speed. But, that is normal.
Overall, I was satisfied with the floor service. I asked someone where an item was, and they took me right to it...after I showed them the picture in their advert.
As for the Haagen Dass girl...let's look at the glass half-full, she was a babeski ;) . But, she wasn't doing any squawking when I passed by her...just giving out free samples of Haagen Daas with a smile.
Yes, the folks on the floor seemed to be knowledgeable and friendly. The young lady in the liqueur section spoke English, and actually asked me why I was writing down the info. I told her many farang wanted to know what they carried, and she just smiled and asked why I found certain things interesting. Very friendly, but professionally friendly.

And yes, the Haagen Daas girl was cute, and she was NOT the one hollering on the microphone. That lady shut up just before I actually got to check out, but I think she was hollering about trying samples of Haagen Daas. It used to be my favorite ice cream in the States at 90-99 baht a pint, which I thought was ridiculously high there. 300+ baht per pint...I will pass. Sort of like 45 baht for a Dr. Pepper. It does help me stay a bit slimmer though. ;)

And as MS said above...prices for things I purchase often are better at the shops. CC and Papa Farangs are hard to beat for meat and pies and the like. Don't worry mash...I still love you and will continue to shop at CC. ;)

Initial reports from a certain Australian going round town claiming VM will send CC bust without knowing much at all about CC and all it entrails ,,, quote : blow them out the water !!! msg to him ,,,,,,, watch this space cobba !!!!!.......

not interested in a price war tho im very confident 99% of CCs imported dry goods , sausage n bacon will be hard to beat ,, i cant see a professional businessman (owner or manager) coming out with a statement like that without doing some homework ...i may be wrong as ever ..

FACT ..... for sure i will be buying some items for personal use during my price check at VM ,,its way too nicer place with great stock to to go n not buy owt .... feta or Cheshire cheese ??? ....

All great news for Udon consumers of quality specialist foods .

Villa is a good operation I once met the owner, he had worked for the American Commissary in Bangkok during Vietnam. That being said he can't be everywhere. So I don't think we will see the personal touch we have with you. Good customer service like that can't be bought. He will get some business. But, you will still have your customer base.

It's like when Harry's Bar was competing with all the operations down town. You went there because you wanted to talk with Harry. More of a friend then a bar tender.

I wouldn't jump into a price war, you are not going to lose your client base.

I have to stop off and meet Chris someday, problem retired. Nothing to do and don't have enough time to get it finished.

Nobody wins in a price war, and honestly, I would continue to support the small businessman as long as he could remain somewhat competitive. The issue with large companies is that they can take a loss for 3-5 years waiting for the competition to dry up, then they are the only game in town. (see WalMart) Of course, then the prices return to higher margins.

They have goats milk feta, at a very high price point. Forget what it was, but as much as I like feta, I passed, which should tell you something. ;) I did not see any sheep milk feta, though they had like 3 to 4 varieties. I did not see any Cheshire, of any type.

Went yesterday, 1st strange thing I saw was there seemed to be no traffic on street where LandMark is across from Bangkok Bank, around 3PM.

Spent about an hour, (sent the wife roaming the Mall, she buys stuff not caring about price), spent 347.50 baht. Would have been 400, but cash out disappeared 2 of my items, 2 dish towels, seemed to be of a better quality than what I have and only 25 baht ea. 2 or 3 cash outs open, no line, all empty, I just picked the wrong one, she had a hard time entering 507.50 baht, what I gave her. Few customers. Problem I had was too many workers blocking the way.

While looking at beer selection, around 3:30, ask if I could buy, or needed to wait til 5PM, they said no problem. I didn’t test it, figured none of the 4 or 5 workers camped out there understood a word I said.

For beef, they seem to carry “French Thai Beef”, which I get at other place, I guess I did not look that closely, saw nothing else. Will go back soon and try “French Thai Beef” Hamburg and maybe a steak or 2.

The main problem I see is parking, and how the fu*ck you will get a full grocery cart back to your car, its like the old Tops. On the other hand, you can still spend 2k baht and get it all into 1 small plastic bag.

Next day, corn beef sandwiches also hit the spot!!

Will cross my fingers that they have some in stock, in any case will be in town tomorrow so might make a run to check the place out!!

I assume that Villa is open now?

I bought Thai French beef for years. The old owner died the quality went down. Chern Chen Thai beef is much better. But, each to his own taste.

Very VERY impressed with Villa Market.

I eat Thai food every day, and don't really miss anything from back home. But now and then I have a hankering for something "western." I usually get my burger fix at McDonald's or SeaSide II or with the new owners at City Lodge. Great burgers there!

But now with Villa Market here, I will change my routine. I plan to go at least once a week and look for the "fixings" for at least one meal from back home.

Great, great place! Very impressed! \:D/

I would be interested in knowing the client mix of Villa shoppers that you have noticed during your visits to their Udon Thani store. Is it mostly Westeners, mostly Thai/Lao or a mixture of both? Thanks.

I don't know how I would tell a Thai from Lao, especially in Issan, but every time I've been there are far more Asians than farangs.

Agreed. Thais and probably some Lao far outnumbered Westerners when we were at Udon Villa Market. Their shopping carts were filling up like ours was. Can't estimate the ratio but would guess about 90% Asian on the day we were there.

My observations whilst I went around laughing at the prices, 95% Asian, 5% Westerners.

Regardless of who you think they're here for, and there's no question that falang customers alone could not justify opening that market here, the fact remains that many of us welcome it. :D Unless they treat me poorly, which I doubt will happen, I will shop there.

As will I. I've been ordering goods from Villa since coming
here some 7 years ago. I've only been disappointed once with some veal I bought sight unseen. When in BKK and driving our own car my wife and I fill up with all kinds of goodies not available in UT. I'm happy they've finally moved up our way.

I find Villa Excellent - Nothing but excellent, huge selection and they nearly have everything, including friendly and helpful staff.

I am afraid that Tops just lost a customer

Will still visit Tops with an occasional visit to Villa Market for those 'products not found anywhere else' slogan that they use. \:D/
On a general note, not sure why they chose Udon thani to open oop country instead of say Chiang Mai which has an International airport and a large customer base. Also why I have never seen a local bakery have goods in their main Sukhumvit branch as they have done here, maybe their Hua hIn branch has a local bakery in theres although nothing mentioned anywhere if you google :-k
Will wait say 3 months to see how the dust settles here in Udon and the parking 8) Not sure why Villa did not just give Landmark Plaza a load of money to secure the Vip parkingarea, since it is Landmarks landspace, and not give any allowance for the street vendors to be there.Big daddy attitude to the locals :D 8)
