Pomps, time for the best batsmen Bell to bat at three as Trott is Root(ed). Root can bat at 4, The Big Boar at 5 and the littler Boar Trott at 6 or out of the team altogether.
Well done to you and Zid for flying the flag and keeping up with the banter and posting. =D> A few of your countrymen who had a bit to say in the last series don't seem to have your sence of humour or good grace and the silence is deafening. :-"

Ah well.....England 179 all out....Australia sneak home by 381 runs.
Absolute shocker from England....they stopped playing in mid afternoon on the first day.....dont mind losing but at least show a bit of fight.....this was gutless ! [-X
Only Broad and,to a lesser extent,Cook did anything in this match.....the rest should forfeit their match fee.
The possible replacements.....Ballance,Bairstow,Stokes,Finn,Rankin,Panesar dont fill me with much hope.Maybe Bairstow for Prior and Finn for Tremlett with Trott dropping down to number 6,as has been suggested.
Not to take anything away from the Aussies and a thoroughly deserved victory.Warner,Clarke,Haddin and,man of the match Mitchell Johnson, were different class to anything England had to offer.
And great for you Aussie guys after these years in the cricketing wilderness :D enjoy your beers tonight.
As an Englishman the most enjoyable part of this test match was the discussion about Rolf Harris.....improvement for the next test.....well,at least Bob Helm will be back ! 8)

What's he doing to that poor Kangaroo Zid? Wonder how old the kangaroo is?
Was great to be able to finish tonight and thank god channel 9 put it on the HD channel as the main channel went to the news (Kerry would be turning in his grave).
The Aussie boys really seemed to enjoy the game and James Anderson, who appears not to be able to take it but doesn't mind giving it, crying and whinging to the umpire before he got out put the icing on the cake.
Off to Adelaide where batsem will make runs and it will be up to either Swann or Lyon on days four and five.
One swallow doesn't make a summer but couldn't be happier with the start.

I am not going to stand on the soap box and crow at the result of the 1st test. Firstly congratulations to the WINNING side, ie AUSTRALIA, to the LOSING TEAM....ENGLAND, try a bit harder next time. It is pleasing to see the English supporters have acknowledged the well done effort of AUSTRALIA. I believe England did invent the game of cricket.

England have invented many games, cricket, rugby, football, snooker AND RUGBY LEAGUE. Oh thats right England played New Zealand in the Rugby League World Cup and ENGLAND LOST TO THE KIWIS, another game they invented and lost at the weekend. I do not want to search various sports that England participated in over the weekend, it may be a sad search.

So to the proud English supporters, thank you for taking defeat in TWO of your invented games with grace.

Don't have to worry about dropping Trott. Just reported on the ABC News that he has boarded a plane back to blighty because of a stress related illness: I think it called Johnsonphobia.
He smashed us last time so good to see the back of him. And I thought Boers were supposed to made of the right stuff [-X

In all seriousness Jon I don't get these professional sports people who have to pack the bags because it all gets a bit too stressful. THEY PLAY SPORT while the rest of us have to scrape a living doin real work. How would your business go if a bit of tough competition gave you the heeby geebies and you stopped turning up for the next round? Would you be able to fly home and sleep on ya grans couch for a few months while you sorted yourself out? And how would I go if I rocked up to work tomorrow and told the boss I was off because an 11 year old had given me a mouthful (wouldn't be the first time) and I could no longer cope? I couldn't live with meself.

Most of us would give our left knackers to be good enough play test cricket, premier league footy, Aussie rules or rugby league instead of doing the nine to five for me or in your case whatever the ungodly hours you work. They get to PLAY SPORT, live in 5 start hotels, the parties, the booze, the women and the public adulation: tough life.

Wish I was on the champagne or some fine Belguin brew last night but infortunately had to put in a shift today so I can pay me electric and gas bills. Guess that's why I have no sympathy for the soft *****.

No word on Jonny Trotts replacement yet.....possibly James Taylor from Nottinghamshire ? :-k
And in another development in the aftermath of the first test Aussie skipper,Michael Clarke, has been fined 20% of his match fee after telling England tailender James Anderson he should prepare to have his arm broken......or words to that effect ! :-$

Replacement for Trott is already here in the touring english performance squad, a shadow team to the current team.
The ashes are gone for england, so blood him so he can play on his home ground the SCG in a test match, albiet for the opposition. I do not think the english all nations team have an aussie in there yet?

Sam Robson
Born July 1, 1989, Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales
Current age 24 years 147 days
Major teams Australia Under-19s, Eastern Suburbs, Middlesex, Middlesex 2nd XI, New South Wales Under-19s, Sydney South East, University of New South Wales

Australian-born Sam Robson is an unlikely record holder. He has made the earliest first-class hundred ever witnessed in the UK, for Middlesex against Durham MCCU before March was out in 2012. Robson bowls occasional legspin having played for New South Wales Under-19s in 2006. He made a Championship debut for Middlesex in 2009 and in 2011 helped Middlesex to promotion with 903 runs at 53.11.
England have struck a significant blow in including him among their back-up party. Robson is the second-highest runscorer in Division One of the County Championship this season with 1,180 runs at 47.20.

Just a thought :-s from an unbiased supporter.

Poms on the whinge again. What a load of Cocky nonsense? We have a saying in Australia "you are like a Drovers Dog, you can give plenty but you can not take it. Heed the lesson you just learnt, Aussies will give back to you twice as much as you give us. WELL DONE BOYS, you coped it in England, now its your turn to put these upstarts back in their box.

Ashes tour down under 2013

Post by downunder » November 26, 2013, 9:51 am

No expense will have been spared preparing Australia's and England's cricketers for the first Ashes Test on Wednesday - from training and physiotherapy, to a good dinner and a luxurious bed. It was very different for the first Australian team to visit the UK.
FIRST EVER TEST MATCH. AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES V ENGLAND 1868

The Australian side arrived in the UK some seven weeks before the start of the first Test at Trent Bridge. Throughout its stay, the squad will adhere to a finely tuned schedule ensuring players start each match at the peak of fitness - and recover quickly afterwards.

But for the first Australian side to tour the UK, conditions were markedly different.

In 1868, English ex-pat and former first class cricketer Charles Lawrence brought a team of 13 Victoria-based Aboriginal players to the UK, intent on capitalising on public curiosity regarding "exotic races" following the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859.

Zellanach (Johnny Cuzens); A fearsome fast bowler The tour faced strong opposition from the Central Board for the Protection of Aborigines in Victoria, which feared that the Aboriginal players would struggle to survive the dismal English weather - it turned out to be a good summer, though the tour continued until October.

Concern had been heightened by the deaths of four players during and immediately after an abortive Sydney tour the previous year, at least two of them from pneumonia. Lawrence was therefore forced to smuggle the players from Victoria into Sydney, where they boarded a wool-carrying clipper bound for the UK on 8 February 1868.

Despite this, former Australian test cricketer Ashley Mallett, author of a book about the tour, Lords' Dreaming, doesn't believe the players were coerced.

"The players would have been happy for all the attention. In Australia at that time, Aboriginal people were treated very badly. Racism was rife," he says.

The team eventually arrived at Gravesend on 13 May, after more than three months at sea - the outward journey alone took longer than the entire 2013 Ashes tour.

After a demonstration of their skills at Town Malling, the following day the Sporting Life wrote that they "gave great satisfaction to a critical coterie of spectators".

"They are the first Australian natives who have visited this country on such a novel expedition, but it must not be inferred they that they are savages," the report continued.

The first match featuring an Australian team in the UK began on 25 May 1868, against a Surrey side at the Oval. A crowd of 7,000 turned up for the first day's play.

The Aboriginal side lost - as they did their first five matches of the tour - but several players impressed observers with the standard of their play. Johnny Mullagh was an all-rounder of genuine talent, while Johnny Cuzens was a fearsome fast bowler.

Squad members of lesser cricketing aptitude were given the opportunity to shine in other ways. Most matches featured two days of cricket followed by a third day of "sports". This involved a mixture of the bizarre - running the 100 yards backwards and a contest involving picking up stones placed a yard apart - and more traditional Aboriginal events such as boomerang throwing.

Dick-a-Dick (the players were known by sobriquets as the public found their real names too difficult to pronounce), for example, had little in the way of cricket ability, yet became an undoubted star of the tour because of his skill at "dodging". Spectators threw cricket balls from 10 paces, which Dick-a-Dick "dodged" using a parrying shield and leangle (an Aboriginal war club). He was hit just once on the entire tour.

One frightening stunt involved a group of players throwing spears at their team-mates - when they had finished, the men were encircled by a ring of spears, the sharp points buried in the ground.

The tour faced resistance from the more conservative members of the British cricketing fraternity, however. Lawrence was desperate for the side to play a match at Lord's, knowing acceptance by the MCC would lead to a rush of lucrative offers from other clubs.

The Minutes of the MCC from 1868 show the Committee was dead against the idea of "tribal demonstrations" following any potential match, stating that "the exhibition was not one suited for Lord's ground".

The match was eventually agreed to and played on 11-12 June, against a side featuring an Earl and a Viscount. The Aboriginal side lost narrowly, but impressed with both their play and their dignified conduct. Despite the MCC's misgivings, an afternoon of "sports" took place when the second day's cricket finished early.

There followed a heated debate within the MCC Committee, though the Treasurer concluded by noting that "the performance seemed to give general satisfaction and the public would have been much disappointed if the sports had not taken place".

As Lawrence predicted, the success of the Lord's match led to further offers, but little consideration was given to the risk of exhausting the players. Matches were arranged in quick succession at opposite ends of the country, leading to a lot of travelling. The team was on the field for 99 out of a possible 126 days.

The tour was struck by one serious tragedy. individual Cole, arguably the side's most proficient fielder, had been taken ill with a chest complaint after the Lord's match. His condition quickly worsened, and he died on 24 June 1868 - apparently of tuberculosis and pneumonia.

Jason Gillespie

Jason Gillespie (pictured) remains only modern-day Aboriginal cricket star
Fast-medium bowler "Dizzy" Gillespie took 259 wickets in 71 Tests and scored double century against Bangladesh in 2006
Retired from first-class game in 2008, he is currently first-team coach at Yorkshire CC
According to Aboriginal belief, it is a terrible thing to die away from home, and Mallett suspects that Lawrence may not have told the side of individual Cole's death for some time.

"In the Aboriginal culture, friends and relatives of a deceased person can sometimes mourn in 'sorry' mode for days, often weeks, and such a time span would have brought the tour to an abrupt halt," he explains.

Two other members of the team, Jim Crow and Sundown, suffered bitterly after individual Cole's death, and returned to Sydney in September, a month before the tour ended.

In total the side won a creditable 14 matches, losing the same number and drawing on 19 occasions.

The tour was a financial success, officially netting a total profit of £2,176, but there is no evidence, Mallett says, that any Aboriginal player received payment.

Any possibility of subsequent tours ended with the implementation of the 1869 Aboriginal Protection Act, which gave the Victoria Aboriginal Protection Board the power to separate Aboriginal children from their families so that they could be "educated" within a European system. The new law meant overseas travel was now out of the question.

It was not until 1988 that the next Aboriginal side visited the UK, as part of Australia's bicentennial celebrations, and it was a full 128 years after the 1868 tour before Australia fielded its first acknowledged Aboriginal test representative, Jason Gillespie, in 1996. The 1868 tour clearly provided little lasting legacy for Aboriginal cricket.

For all the difficulties they faced and the fact that one of the team died, Mallett believes the Aboriginal players genuinely enjoyed the tour, partly because they were treated with more respect than they were accustomed to at home.

It would certainly have been different from their work as agricultural labourers in Australia.

"If we are looking for an analogy it would have been akin to us being gathered up and flown in a space ship to the moon."

I think you will find this ashes series plain saleing as it looks to me like the ""poms"" as you call them have arrived with little heart or fight ... they appear to be on a jolly , and poor old stressed out Trott ...orrrr poor little bunny had to go home to mummy , why was he taken in the first place if he has a mental problem ?? ... he should never play test cricket again as ive already stated ..

Im sure you enjoyed the victory with a few beers and a sing song to your Rolf Harris greatest hits vynil collection from when you were a teenager .. i bet youve tied a few kangarroos down sport in your time !!

The scores travelled to me in deepest Cambodia if not in any great detail.

Not a lot different to the series in England really, except Bell didn't manage to make a winning score. The rest did about the same.

England still struggling with a 3rd paceman to keep the pressure on after Anderson & Broad but the batting is a shambles.

Don't like to say I told you so - but that won't stop me saying it... :D

Trott & Pied did NOTHING in England to suggest that they would be competitive a couple of months later. On form neither deserved to get on the plane. Sadly the selectors seem to view reputation more strongly than performance.
No one wants to see players dropped after just one bad performance but when it is continual then the only sensible decision is to send players back to their counties until they find some form.

More pain to follow Zid unless Bell suddenly becomes the best player in the world again & Cook can find the sort of batting form he had before he was made captain...
Not optimistic I must admit...

It was certainly tough on this thread with you not being here,Bob. At times it felt like it was just me up against the rampaging Aussies ! :D
But I've survived and dont appear to have suffered any stress related illness,so should be ready for the second test on 5th December !

Your last sentence is more than can be said for one englishm sitting on a business class seat back to EPL land. It is unfortunate because he was right where the aussies wanted him, like that TV show some time back
"YOU ARE, THE WEAKEST LINK" well at least that's what Warner thought.

The endland team are i think in the middle of no where in central australia. Won't hear any thing of them until the next camel train arrives in Adelaide with their kit on board.

England currently playing a two day match against a CA Chairmans XI in Alice Springs.....a chance for Englands batsmen to show the dismal showing in the first test was a "one off ? "
Not really......England currently 152-6 (Ballance 55,Stokes 28)......Carberry,Root,Prior and Bell all out cheaply. [-(

Just to remind England sports supporters there is a full programme of English Premier League matches this coming weekend and,also,midweek........ :(
