Udon City Anniversary

You can read the poster two different ways:

1) I want to see the Largest Thai Dance, vying for the Guinness Record Books

or

2) I want to avoid the area where the Largest Thai Dance will be vying for the record books.

In either case, the dance is scheduled to take place on 15 January, time yet to be determined (probably morning), at the statue circle......to commemorate the 121st anniversary of the founding of Udon by Prince Prachak.

You can call 042-325176 for more info.

So it's not about some rather obese Thai people dancing then #-o
Ashamed to be English since 23rd June 2016 when England voted for racism & economic suicide.

Disgusted that the UK is “governed” by a squalid bunch of economically illiterate, self-serving, sleazy and corrupt neo-fascists.

I think it's a variation on the "chicken" dance ......

Thousands of young sheep going round and round the roundabout .......... think it's called More lamb :-k

I assume it's a "kids" thing, so are they all off school that day?

This well known official ceremony and traditional dance, in honour of Prince Prachak, takes place in the morning of 18 January every year. (not on the 15th).

There are several videos of this dance on YouTube (filmed in previous years):

A belated thanks, Frankie, for pointing out my error on the date.

The city has issued an advisory about closing Tahan Rd in preparation for the ceremony:
The sign says:
One lane of Tahan Rd will be closed on the 14th and the 17th of January between 10PM and 5 AM

and

Tahan Rd will be closed on the 15th between 6AM and 12PM (noon) and again on 17 January between 1AM and 1PM (I take that to mean the entire road)

In order to prepare for the city's 121st anniversary festival.

On the 18th, there are ceremonies planned in the morning and again late afternoon around the statue. I would expect extremely heavy traffic in the vicinity of the statue circle all day on the 18th....including most all of Srisuk and Phosri. Plan ahead!!

A Thai friend of mine who's involved with some of the anniversary celebrations says there will be a big fireworks show on 18 Jan, evening, at Nongprajak. If I come across the actual time, I'll pass it on. Given the grand level of celebration this year, I'd expect the show to be a good one.

Dao has just informed me that her and all her sisters n nieces are gonna be doing the mega dance ... even been practicing tonight ... and from what ive seen it will be something to behold NOT ..... John Travolta n Olivia Newtron Bomb would turn in their graves calling this dancing ...its more like a swinging walk with added arm waving .

So long as they enjoy themselves thats all that matters .

I dropped my wife off this morning about 7:45 and it's already a cluster ----. I would avoid the entire area, including the practice days. As of last night, they are 5000 plus registered participants.

Anyone taking part in the record beating stunt can claim a certificate of their achievement from The Guinness Book of Records for the modest sum of 33$.TimesX 5,000+? A nice little earner aye?

Anyone know who holds the record for having the most certificates issued for one event? :-k

Perhaps if they don't get enough dancers, they could choreograph the arm waving, give them all flags (plenty of them in Udon) and claim the record for the most semaphore signals done at the same time :-"

The number of participants required for the record is 5,121 and are registered and requires verification by Guinness. They're anticipating 10,000 or more participants (registered & non-registered). The record breaking dancers (registered) will form on Tahon rd from the traffic circle back past the University entrance. Sirsuk and other soi's from the traffic circle are for non-registered participants.

The 18Th is also the day of the scheduled bike ride, so it may get real busy in that area.

I saw some of the rehearsal yesterday, it looked good.

While it was interesting for 5 mins as a resident of Soi Jintakam I would much prefer it to be held at Nong Prajak or somewhere else a long way from me.

If that is part of the drill for bikes, may see some overheating problems.
