Not the sort of thing you'd expect in/around Udon.....but a mere 26 or so km SW of Udon there's going to be a Lifestock Show and Rodeo 10-12 January at the P.C. Ranch.
There's a full schedule of events (in Thai) at the link below. After you pass the Nongwahsaw four-way intersection, continue toward Nongbualamphu about 8 or so KM. You'll see signs for PC Ranch on the right.

I see they have Barrel Recing, Saddle Brong, Danding with the Pony, and Bull Ridimg. Some of my favorites. :D

I grew up with rodeos, like them a lot. Perhaps we'll take a jaunt down there and catch some of the action.

Another missed opportunity to improve visitor attractions to Udon Thani province. This town needs all the help it can get to make visitors come here.
Broken links, poor marketing, and promotion.

I might be missing something, but their website works fine for me...and signs are up all over town promoting the rodeo.

Drove out there this morning around 0830, they were still setting up for the day.

Note:
After departing the main highway, the roads are narrow and the last 1/4 mile is all dirt road.
If it turns out to be a big event, parking will be a nightmare.

Went out there today. It is a nice place for a family outing. Lots of animals for the children to enjoy.

Were there lots of Cows and/or Buffalo in the fields openly displaying the food contents of their mouths, and flexibility of their facial muscles and mouths? If so I will pay a visit there next year and sit among them with my picnic rather than going to the food hall at Tesco, Big C or Central Plaza.

Easy to get to. Plenty of parking. There is a big sign on the highway indicating the turn, just follow the flags and signs, it's about 3.5 kms from the highway. The turnoff is about 5 kms past the Nong Wau Sau traffic light. There are two main areas, one with the coffee shop and the main entertainment area, the other with the petting zoo. I believe it's open all the time, we are going back next weekend for riding lessons for the children.

Did any of you guys attend the rodeo. As an ex rider and exhibitor in the livestock show (winning Reserve Grand Champion one year), I would be interested in knowing how it went.

Thanks

Not that great - went there yesterday with my five-year-old daughter. I got a vacant look from the female who I bought food from for my daughter to feed the ponies, when I questioned why she charged me 100 baht but the small group of locals in front of me were only charged 50 baht. This small group of six and us were the only people there and it was about 11am. I know it was the Udon bike weekend and the big dance record attempt but I thought there would have been more people there. It does not take long to see what is there, and a visit to Khon Kaen Zoo is a better option. A ride on a pony for my daughter was quoted at 500 baht for 10 minutes. Won't be back.

My wife and I are easily impressed.....so be forewarned.
Lacking other things to do today.....nice breezy cool day....we drove out to PC Ranch for our first ever visit. If you want to tour the animals, entrance costs 100Baht per person. If you just want to use their restaurant, no charge.
We ate lunch.....both my wife and I a burger....300 Baht each....not cheap, but the service was good, the burger was delicious, and there were plenty of photo opportunities in the room while we waited for our meal.
Then we took a tour of the ranch in a chauffeured large golf cart......Brahma bulls, long horns, sheep, goats, a wide variety of horses, donkeys, deer, muscats, fox, a prairie dog......all the animals were kept in very clean and well-maintained facilities. No small cages/pens. There were enough photo opportunities to go through several rolls of film and flash bulbs.........and if you wanted to pay extra, you could ride a variety of their vehicles around the premises. There's also a Harry Potter setup that kids might enjoy.
According to our driver, the owner (.......perhaps of Ban Chiang Hotel family) has plans for a major water park as well as other attractions.
My wife and I would have no problem returning for another tour....definitely cool season.......just as an escape close to home.
And if you're interested, the jungle market is a mere few km up the road.
