It is obvious the Immgration Police have got the wrong man :-s . According to a post by Goshawk some months ago, and based on an alleged sighting by him in Englishmans Retreat, I am Adrian, not Adrian. [-X :-#

I was informed this morning that Adrian is on his way to Bangkok on Sunday so at least the process has nstarted . A friend of mine is visiting him tomorrow i think to ensure he is reasonably ok,
Mnay have called me a miserable bugger for not helping him, but I really fell that NOT helping will ensure he lives, it is one of those times when being cruel to be kind is the only way.

Mark me down as a whimp on this. I feel sorry for the fool but I salute you guys who have tried to help him before. He'll be going through hell. Just drying out would be tough not that I have ever had to do that.

Interesting that sadly some people only comment on some of the many symptoms of alcoholism. Its a disease just like gambling is or other forms of addiction. It has huge social , clinical and personal side effects.

How many people here in Udon would come under the classification of alcohol dependant ?? Google that and do a self assessment and see where you sit in that.

Its sad its tragic and its a clinical disease just like diabetes or some form of personality disorder. Just because you cant see the condition like a fractured femur doesnt mean we should ignore it.

If it was an Alien hit by a drunk Thai we might all gather round and chip in ? But alcohol was the root cause of this incident.

But our social stigmas, predjudices and perhaps bigoted views get pushed to the front.

Mental health issues just like various addictions dont attract the same response as Ebola, MERS or HIV but still have wide ranging social impact.

What is even more sad is underneath the drunken alcoholic that was Adsrian is a reasonably intelligent man. !0 years ago , he got drunk but never like he was latterly. And yes many helped him as he talked the good talk and to be honest who really wanted a Foreigner in the police station. So many did some gave him a lot of money some only a couple of thousand, whatever we gave because we had a social disease called ' caring'
over time Adrian distanced himself from many haunts ( mainly because he was banned ) and almost removed himself from the public eye, true one saw him very occasionally, often under the weather but never really bad. Then he went to Chiang Mai some said it was for a job, I do not really know, but as he was amongst a new set of people he failed to control himself and eventually was sent packing and he came back to Udon Thani, the only place I think he really knew.
But the rot had set in he was on the downward path to full blown alcoholism, he was as one friend said to me past the point of no return, only death or an enforced period of abstinence would possibly help him . He is lucky as the former has not happened but the latter has, one can only hope that his stay in Bkk will not kill him and that in the UK he gets help. if not the next thing we see will be his OBITUARY.

Do you fit the criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence?
DSM-IV Criteria for Alcohol Abuse:

A maladaptive pattern of alcohol abuse leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by one or more of the following, occurring within a 12-month period:
Recurrent alcohol use resulting in failure to fulfil major role obligations at work, school, or home (e.g., repeated absences or poor work performance related to substance use; substance-related absences, suspensions or expulsions from school; or neglect of children or household).
Recurrent alcohol use in situations in which it is physically hazardous (e.g., driving an automobile or operating a machine).
Recurrent alcohol-related legal problems (e.g., arrests for alcohol-related disorderly conduct).
Continued alcohol use despite persistent or recurrent social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by the effects of the alcohol (e.g., arguments with spouse about consequences of intoxication or physical fights).
These symptoms must never have met the criteria for alcohol dependence.

DSM-IV Criteria for Alcohol Dependence:

A maladaptive pattern of alcohol use, leading to clinically significant impairment or distress, as manifested by three or more of the following seven criteria, occurring at any time in the same 12-month period:

Tolerance, as defined by either of the following:
-A need for markedly increased amounts of alcohol to achieve intoxication or desired effect.
- Markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of alcohol.
Withdrawal, as defined by either of the following:
-The characteristic withdrawal syndrome for alcohol (refer to DSM-IV for further details).
-Alcohol is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Alcohol is often taken in larger amounts or over a longer period than was intended.
There is a persistent desire or there are unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control alcohol use.
A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain alcohol, use alcohol or recover from its effects.
Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced because of alcohol use.
Alcohol use is continued despite knowledge of having a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by the alcohol (e.g., continued drinking despite recognition that an ulcer was made worse by alcohol consumption).

American Psychiatric Association. 1994. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) (DSM-IV). Washington, D.C.: APA.

No doubt there are other tests/indicators.

Perhaps I should turn this into a poll. :-k

Some definitions say 40 grams of alcohol per day every day etc.

Thats about 5 normal stubbies of beer on a daily consumption.

Not sure where spirits fit into that in numbers...

forget about alcoholism
adrian was a trouble maker besides being a drunk, he wasn't a nice person, he was a bully too using his size to intimidate people.
his stay is not on any taxpayers bill if he ever sees the light of day he will have to repay all bills he has incurred plus interest and bribe payments.
he deserves to be in the detention center for a very long long time and its his karma for being a stupidass
I do not feel any pity or sympathy for him, I pity those 50 to 60 people who will be stuck with him in the small cell.

On behalve of Adrian he would like to extends his gratitude to all who helped him in the past and wishes ALL a merry christmas. Currently, Adrian is still in Udon (police) prison and doesn't know when he'll be moved to the IDC.

Khun Paul wrote :
to have the distinction of being removed from a City in this country has got to be first. Indeed NO ONE can't get evicted from a city for being a drunk, annoying character or what ever one might feel about TEACHER Adrian.
He effectively and with full confidence of many parents taught many children, adults their conversational skills albeit basic comprehensive conversational English. He's at least comparing that with your teaching performance Khun Paul, not as boring where students in your class are falling asleep quite litterally when you start teaching. Surely not all of them but some.

Khun Paul, with your level of intelligence, seriously, how you can come up with this ? Have you been informed by some one or did you just make that one up like ? After leaving DBS he went to Chiang Mai were he taught and they figured out what was Adrian all about and left that place. You wrote: I do not really think this is or ever was about teaching qualifications which I am led to believe were OK. What about yours ? From the uni of Canterbury right ? Then you wrote: I really fell that NOT helping will ensure he lives, it is one of those times when being cruel to be kind is the only way.

Most certainly your assumption is correct Khun Paul, as many feel likewise. Regarding Adrian's rather unpleaseant situation which he has done himself, it's his only chance and on a bit more importanly matter is to get rid of his alcohol addiction and hopefully will make him think and change.
At least in the UK he is entitled to social services and emergency housing so hopefully he'll see the light. If he chooses to indeed spend all his notes in the local pub then who know's really what will happen ?

@Wilson_smith : Adrian was a trouble maker besides being a drunk, = true. He wasn't a nice person = Quite false when being sober he is rather an intelligent chap to converse with. Which makes me think. Have you ever met him being sober ? He was a bully too using his size to intimidate people = False. Have you ever been bullied by him personally or just plain tosh ?? I am smaller then Adrian and he never intimidated me using his size, furthermore, what came out his mouth being intoxicated was a load of tosh anyway. For instance, in Blighty (anywhere really) he would've been hospitalised many times over or even knifed, shot and all that.

Many, and I mean many punters alike, know how to restrain themselves by using strong and diplomatically chosen words to defuse any unwanted situation. Then you wrote : he deserves to be in the detention center for a very long long time and its his karma for being a stupidass. Question : how long precisly in time do you want to him to be at the IDC just for having an overstay ? Most certainly a stupidass and a wino but nonetheless an intimidating bully. In his vicious circle of alcoholism he never went to make an extension and was told by many, so ofcourse one gets arrested over time.

Also "I do not feel any pity or sympathy for him" as some posters say here on this topic I would like to say to them: Tell him in person you know where to find him, right ? Cheersssss !

I seen Adrian in the detention rooms at the rear of Udon Thani Police Stn on Sat/Sunday. I was expecting to see a disheveled man, to my surprise he was fit and healthy, he did not want for anything, the food was 1st class and sometimes they get Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonalds. He has the phone, TV, only 2 persons to a large cell so he's quite happy.

He was to be conveyed to Bangkok IDC on Monday then with a friends help, money paid and he is flying out of Thailand with a return ticket, he can come back to Thailand but has to leave Thailand first.

Thanks to the local expat people who contacted me and I gave him your regards, he did like that. So hopefully some of us may see him back here and be a better person for this experience.

Streuth sport. I gather because he's a farang he was treated well. You wouldn't want to be a Thai in a Thai prison. Perhaps someone was paying for his food?

Interesting posts wazza. The medical people want to reduce everything to biology because that's how they frame the world. Their training prohibits them from looking more widely. A lot of people think parts of science are bollocks and humans are much more than biology. Scientists often ignore our emotional, social and spiritual dimensions. Perhaps less so in more recent times. The medical people say we're addicted to all sorts of shxt now - pornography, sxx, masturbation, gambling, computer games, Facebook ...

Many punters want to say this is bollocks and is just a lack of will power by piss weak people who make bad choices ...
I don't have a firm answer for myself on all this but I accept science has a very poor history in many areas and is in much flux on some issues. I acknowledge there are differences in humans.

GT, there were Thais in the detention centre as well as Adrian, walking around smoking, kicking back and watching TV. The food is supplied to all the detainees in the prison system, Adrian was not sure about this, but he did not have to pay even though he had cash on him.

Will he get a check bin when he left or leaves, I doubt it.

One seriously hopes that he will be able to turn his life around, whether he is able legally to return to Thailand in the near future is a mute point, that being said i fear that if he does the same spiral of his way of life will recommence.
At least in the not too distant future he can get assistance in getting better and restart his life , no matter where he is.
