muscle relaxants like "norgesic", anti inflamitory "melcam" and thai massage, you have to tell them in thai what the problem is

Nothing specific and maybe not helpful but...

We consulted a specialist when my wife had this condition in the UK. When he heard we were going back to Thailand the next week, he said "massage is actually the one of the best solutions so go as often as you can"

Have you had a diagnosis as to WHY, the nerve is not playing nice. Bulging or herniated disc, in L1-5 region is usual suspect.

Udon has a visiting Chiro on a monthly basis.

On the massage thing, a therapeutic massage and not the usual, feels nice and relaxing crap most give you. If done properly, and has been neglected for a while, the massaging of the sciatic nerve is going to be very uncomfortable / down right painful, and try not to cry like a biatch.. ...while it is being unleashed / loosened up once again, during the first few massages. 3 to 7 should do it, and maybe space them out a day or so. It will be a lot of thumb pressing along you whole leg, and not pleasant. Lots of V's help.... :-$

Complimented with exercise and especially stretching. A good guide is you flexibility, especially your hamstring, which if tight and can't seem to get pass a 90 º / sitting position with leg outstretched, on a bench type seat, w/back straight, then chance are you sciatic nerve is all bound up also, as they seem to go hand in hand / leg in leg.......

Good luck

I had a prolasped disc in my spine yonks ago, ( after to much hard work ) which causes a sciatic type pain (leg and back )..
even after total rest for 6 months, no lifting, sleeping in bed with a chair and a box, my leg weithered away to Gandi, and was almost useless..went to NZ hospital, head dude had me in next day for Op, trimmed the jelly like disc, as if it was mum trimming an apple pie before putting it in the oven to bake...two yrs of no lifting, wore an elastic belt that has left a permenant imprint around me guts...if it is a prolasped disc, go see the best surgeon you can find, and take recovery lying down for yrs...now last night I had abit of rumpo 3 times, and not a tweek....rest buddy, not sitting, lying down, elastic belt thingy, all helps

I too had a prolapsed disc, unfortunately following the op, it was found to have broken up into bits, they removed 97%, and after 3 months was allowed back to work. For the following three years kept getting pain down the leg, so the surgeon opted for a second op ( same place and lo and behold found the 3% he did not find before and removed it, played with my spinal cord and put everything back, since then no pain unless I work too hard in the garden.

The symptoms was as everyone else has written about , however I was also told that the disc rubbing along the spinal cord and the subsequent inflammation of the nerves as they go through the pelvic bone can lead to excruciating pain, But if the pain gets down to the foot or feels as if the body is being cut in half by the pain going around the body, seek immediate medical and probably surgical assistance as NOT doing something could leave you in a wheel chair . NO surgical procedure would help you .
My ops were at a private hospital in the UK by a very competent consultant orthopedic surgeon, after wards I was on 100 gram painkillers for three months, but after advice weaned myself off them, as pain indicates I have done too much, occasionally take Norgesic ( non-prescription muscle relaxant and painkiller ) before I go to bed, helps me sleep and relaxes the muscles enough to ease the problem.
I rarely get a pain now but if I do I take it easy, after 35 years following the operation, I am lucky only to have minimal pain and have full mobility.

Just taking painkillers for a pain that returns weekly or monthly is NOT a sound option, you only have one back and if that does not work, you do NOT walk nor be able to stand up. A leg you can do without as you can an arm, but a back .

In treuth as I was informed although the Milogram showed a problem as did the extensive X-rays , until he opened me up , he had no idea what was wrong and that people is the problem, many talk blithely about the Sciatic nerve being a problem or even torn muscles and if your young then probably they could be right, I too was sceptical, but was I glad that I sought medical/ surgical treatment , or else I would have been confined to wheel-chair for the rest of my life.

well, I'd say listen to your body.. If your back starts to hurt a lot and you get various related pains down your posterior and legs you may have serious issues.. Get it checked out before thoroughly before you start getting massages or self-medicate.. I had a co-worker who was about 40, a bit overweight and in moving some fairly light furniture twisted his back.. He complained for days, then weeks, then started getting massages, then complained some more.. Finally, he got off his butt went to a doctor and got his back MRI'ed.. He crushed a disc in his back which was causing all the pain.. He ended up in physical therapy for a number of months which consisted basically of putting him on a traction rack which took the pressure off the damaged disk and allowed it to heal.. Luckily, he didn't need surgery which was the only other option...

So, Balthasar, summarizing this excellent post:
1).First and foremost do NOT act upon any unqualified treatment advice/suggestions irrespective of how well intentioned.
2). Enquire at the various hospitals locally to decide which you feel has the specialists & equipment best suited to identify the cause of your problem and the treatment recommended.
In this latter connection, perhaps any members who have experienced a similar problem, and received satisfactory service at one of the local hospitals, will kindly help you by posting full contact details? Which I suspect was the intention of your original post.
Good luck.

Depends if the OP has a history of, and knowledge about. If all new to them, the forum would be the last place for medical advise.

The OP was a bit vague.

If an ongoing issue, and OP has experience with, then a good chiro / masseuse may straighten things out.

[quote="12345"] the forum would be the last place for medical advise.

As your two posts amply demonstrate! [-o<

I am sure the OP appreciates your helpful response Stan. I am happy to endorse your remarks concerning Dr. Den, as I am sure would other locals who have benefitted from his advice & services, over recent years.

The requirements of the OP having been fulfilled, I'm finished with this thread

Hmm.......... I guess 'my' recommendation for visiting chiro..........was what ???

Since OP never got back, guess he didn't need the Dr Den info.

And in case OP knows the issue, but hasn't tried a 'therapeutic' massage, I figured I share with him my experiences with one, so he's not too surprised about the experience, and a heads up of what to expect.

Obviously I haven't a clue what I'm talking about, since been dealing w/ SCIATICA for well over 40 yrs, had surgery almost 20 years ago, and had it recommended again 15 years ago, as a must have, but knowing my body, decided using a chiro and massage as a better alternative to getting sliced and diced again.

Hey, but what do I know..............

Getting any treatment for Sciatica, without first seeking Medical advice , is fraught with danger .
However some seem to advise it as a panacea for all ills regarding the back, which is completely stupid and very dangerous.
Those of us who have had a back problem and sought medical intervention are normally a lot saner than those who feel that a Medical / Therapeutic massage will do the trick .

Well to those of you who feel that I am talking out of turn, I do so hope that you will not be confined to bed or even a wheelchair for the rest of your life because seeking medical advice ( properly ) could be expensive and you thought that a Dr / Masseur, will be able to put you right.

An arm OK, a Leg even , but if you are talking about the part of your body your spinal cord goes down and made up of lots if individual bones that may look OK but even one slightly out of sync can cause you problems, without a X-ray or Milogram to see what is amiss is a recipe for disaster and many of these so-called EXPERTS go by guess or by golly.
The Orthopedic surgeon who operated on me cautioned me while talking that even though we had decided to operate , many are scared and even opt for a massage to put it right , half of his back work came because the patient thought that no operation could be better, sometimes it is, that is for sure IF and it is a BIG IF medical checks have shown that it is a minor problem and that the BACKBONE and resulting tissues and discs are fine.
As an aside upon operating on me he found the offending disc was NOT the one showing up on the X-ray but the next one down, go figure .
So how many of you walking around with a back pain are willing to second guess and risk it . Quite a few judging by this post, well I hope my tales of doom and gloom do NOT come to fruition, but if they do, I will not tell you I told you so, you will know that anyway. I will just smile gently.

I have been using Chiropractors since 1960.I lived in Bangkok ,using various Chiropractors there for almost 5 years. The chiropractors were all centered in Bangkok and my need was such that I felt I couldn't leave Bangkok for the 3 1/2 years that I really wanted to get out of there.I moved to Nong Khai in 2002 because it was on a direct rail line to Bangkok, allowing me to medicate and lie down in various temporary positions on the overnight train. This worked for me about 20 times a year, but was rather expensive, but well worth it to be out of Bangkok.

I met Dr.Den when he was visiting in NK about 3 1/2 years ago,After a treatment of a friend and myself and comparing his technique to the vast number of competent Chiros I have frequented over 50 plus years,I talked him into making trips to Udon on a monthly basis if I could get a average of 10 people per trip.He has come every month since we started!

He has done more than 600 treatments here in that time, with about a 90% satisfaction rate and some real 'miraculous' treatments to some patients that I personally watched! There have been a few communication problems where he manipulated an area that he shouldn't have and causing pain,so not everything has been perfect, but no permanent damage and we have all learned from the experience.

For me personally, his monthly alignments has allowed me not to have any back problems whatsoever for the entire time he has been coming and my yearly expense have been reduced by over 80% !!!
