I'm sure many of us switched on for the Thailand v Japan game last night. It turned out to be a stroll in the park for the Japanese with only dreadful finishing and good goalkeeping keeping the score down to 2-0.
In turns of the gulf in class between the two sides it was probably like watching Grimsby take on Chelsea.

Well done to Marcus Rashford for his hat trick for the Under 21's.Surely he is worth a place in the senior squad at the expense of any of the misfiring Kane,Rooney or Sturridge.I was surprised to learn that Harry Kanes nickname is "Hurrikane"........more like a "deep depression" for England fans,up to now !

Agreed Zid, watching was like being sat on a Samui beach .......... wave after wave hitting Thailand

Might have been a very different finish if Thailand had taken their ONE chance (about 70 mins :-k ) instead of hitting the Jap goalie in the face. That would have been 1 - 1 and still 11 v 11, and with the Japs low confidence after their previous game it could have made for a very interesting and nervy finish.

Not too impressed with this squad........
Surely Clyne and Shaw are better bets at reserve full backs than Johnson and Bertrand ??
Jagielka :( Henderson :( Rooney :(
Too many ageing specialists in failure in the squad.....at least he's called up Rashford !

Tight at the top of Group D.
The 4 in contention - Wales, Austria, Serbia & The Republic of Ireland - all have 4 points after 2 games. As expected, the cannon fodder - Georgia & Moldova - have none.
So the draw away in Austria is a good result for Wales I think!!

Unbeaten Albania (but they haven't beaten much :D ) top Group G as the two favourites (Italy & Spain) play out a draw in Italy in a game dominated by the visitors.

It is going to be tight in Group I as well.
Croatia & Finland are on 4 points, Ukraine & Turkey on 2, while Finland struggle away in 5th. spot on 1 point..

Group A looks like another tough group to qualify from as Holland seem to be playing to their potential this time around. Netherlands, France & Sweden all locked at the top on 4 points. Bulgaria just behind them on 3, but they were severely put in their place by France last night..

Great result away in Hungary for Switzerland, who remain unbeaten. Remarkably the Faroe Islands slip into 2nd. spot with a away win against Latvia. I am sure that they will have copies of the current table printed out & afixed to every door on the Islands!! The European champions slip into gear & third with Ronaldo scoring 4 against mighty Andorra. :D

Belgium & Greece both retain perfect starts in Group H.

No surprise that Germany top Group C. The surprise is that Azerbaijan are up there with them on points. A hugely disappointing loss to them by Norway last night. Northern Ireland continue to do all that could be asked of them & are in 3rd. spot, 2 points behind.

Another surprise in Group E as Montenegro go top on goal difference. They are joined by Romania & Poland. Denmark are a point behind after lasts nights' loss. In theory they should qualify easily out of the group & I guess that they will feel that they now have their toughest game out of the way..

No cricket score against the minnows for England, but it is enough to put them 2 points clear at the top. Dreadful draw for Scotland who now have the fancied Slovenia on their heels..

A very sloppy result by Wales, who go third, while a good result away by Ireland, who climb above them to second. Serbia edge Ireland out by goal difference. With Austria also in the mix this is looking a tough group to get out of..

Group G is the same, with Spain & Italy locked at the top, 1 point behind are both Albania & Israel.

Finland look dead & buried already in Group I after a home loss to leaders Croatia. They are level on points with Iceland with Ukraine 2 points behind. Unless something remarkable happens the Group seems pretty well set with the current top 2 battling out the top spot in their two legs.

The defeat of Holland home to France takes the French up to top spot & Holland down to 3rd by 2 points in Group A. Sweden slip into second spot on goal difference. That looks like the top 3, with current 4th. Bulgaria missing out.

Switzerland top Group B by 3 points but it was a close thing against tiny Andorra. The European champions have a second thrashing of the minnows to further improve thrir goal difference after a poor start to the Group. Hungary overtake the Faroe Islands on goal difference for 3rd. It has been a mighty campaign by the Ilanders though, despite last night's drubbing.

Belgium & Greece vie for top spot in Group H as they both have perfect scores. Bos-Herze seem to have tied up the third spot unless something goes very wrong in the remaining results..

Plaudits to Southgate for having the guts to drop Rooney. =D> Although Rooney is Englands leading goalscorer,I can only recall him doing well in one of the major tournament finals and that was when he burst on the international scene as an exciting 18 year old talent in Euro 2004.
Those days are long gone.A lot of his goals have come in easy qualifiers and he's not been worth his place for a couple of years now.
Same with Manchester United, where he has been a great player, but time has caught up with him and he no longer has any pace and his close control skills have deserted him.
Cant see another Premiership or decent European team wanting him.....maybe one last big pay off in America or China ?
But then again,he's on 300k GBP a week till 2019 at United thanks to Moyes,so why should he go anywhere ? :(

Wayne Rooney: England captain in a 'difficult period' as he is dropped

England captain Wayne Rooney says he is in a "difficult period" after he was dropped for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.
Interim manager Gareth Southgate said the decision was tactical and not a reflection of the forward's form.
Rooney, who was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd during Saturday's 2-0 win over Malta, has not started Manchester United's past three matches.
The 30-year-old said there was "no embarrassment" in being on the bench.
Rooney will retain the captaincy but Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will be the on-field skipper on Tuesday.
The United player is England's record scorer with 53 goals in 117 appearances, but has netted one goal in 12 games for club and country this season.
"My game now? Of course, I'm not denying it is in a difficult period. I've been on the bench the last few games for Manchester United but that's part of football," said Rooney, who is England's most-capped outfield player.
"I have to work hard and when I'm needed for both club and country, I'll make sure I'm ready."
Tottenham's Eric Dier will replace Rooney in midfield against Slovenia

Germany are firmly in charge of Group C, 2 points clear of second placed Azerbaijan. Northern Ireland are a further 3 points behind in 3rd. Norway managed to get their first points on the board with their home defeat of whipping boys, San Marino. The Czech Rep are languishing in 5th. with just 2 draws to show for their efforts.
I did think that it was a hard task for Northern Ireland to qualify out of this group but am totally surprised that it is Azerbaijan keeping them at bay.

Montenegro's defeat of Denmark at home is enough to keep them top on goal difference. Second placed Poland rather limped to victory at home to Group whipping boys Armenia, but it was enough as 3rd. placed Romania could only get a goalless draw in Kazakhstan & are now a couple of points off the pace.

England do enough in a very lucky away draw in Slovenia to remain 2 points clear at the top. Lithuania slip above Slovenia on goal difference into second spot. A bad night away for Scotland sees them start to struggle a further point behind in 4th. place. That while rumours abound that the manager has lost interest in the job. A cynic might say that you can hardly blame him.. :D

England are very lucky they are in such a weak group........a mid-table Championship side would probably qualify from that lot ! =;

France ease by Sweden as the first 2 in Group A clash. It gives France a 3 point lead at the top while giving Holland a sniff at second place - they are currently 3 points behind Sweden, but have a game in hand.

Germany continue to dominate Group C as they stuff poor San Marino. Northern Ireland produce a very good home result against formerly second placed Azerbaijan to move above them. The Czech Republic beat Norway to be 2 points further back as Norway's poor qualification continues.
group c.png
group c.png (12.42 KiB) Viewed 1671 times

Poland's good away win puts them 3 points clear at the top of Group E as previous joint leaders, Montenegro, suffer a bit of a surprising loss to away to previously pointless Armenia. Denmark are now just a point out of second spot after their win against new bottom side, Kazakhstan.

Comfortable win for England keeps them top by 2 points as second placed Slovenia rather stumple to just a 1 goal win against pointless Malta. Slovakia have an easy home win to keep the pressure on for second spot. Scotland now need a minor miracle to qualify out of the group.

The Republic have a great away win in Austria, while Wales fall to a last gasp leveler at home. Close to say who will eventually be 1 & 2 in Group D.
group d.png
Israel beating Albania puts them 3rd. Group G is still all about Spain & Italy though..
group G.png
Iceland can't keep their magic going away to group leaders Croatia. Ukraine take over second spot, but it is still very close at the top.

France in charge in Group A, but it is still between Holland, Sweden & Bulgaria for the second spot..
group a.png
The Swiss score half the goals of the two other group b home sides against minnows the Faroe Islands, but this is very much a group of 3 with a chance & 3 no hoppers. Portugal & Hungary will battle it out with them for qualification.
group b.png
Group H should be Belgium's & they keep up their perfect record with a home thumping of poor Estonia. Greece & Bosnia-Herzegovina battle it out for second..

Excellent update Bob. A stunner from lukas Podolski in Dortmund puts Gareth Southgate's challenge into perspective. Better not mention Scotland's home draw with Canada, good to see Naisy on scoresheet. England played 3-4-3 will that continue on Sunday?
