Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Post by BobHelm » April 30, 2018, 2:34 pm

Anybody running Windows 10 should have had a major update to the system in April.
It has not so much changed the way it looks (although there is some of that) as added some new features which users may, or may not, find useful.
Here is a link to a handy & simple explanation of the new features..

As promised last week, Microsoft has begun rolling out the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (codenamed "Redstone 4") for PCs, starting at 1pm EST on April 30.

The latest release, Build 17134.1, is available to those who proactively go download the bits. (Microsoft also revealed in a blog post that anyone who uses Windows Update on their PCs to check proactively for updates will see the new release now, as well.)

April 30 is also the day Windows 10 April 2018 Update arrives on MSDN/Visual Studio downloads, as Microsoft officials said last week. Those who'd prefer to wait for Microsoft to begin pushing the update to them will begin seeing it arrive via Windows Update starting May 8. As with other Windows 10 feature rollouts, this one will be staged. Certain devices with a higher likelihood of successful updating will get it first.

Microsoft posted to its Microsoft docs site on April 30 a handy list of IT Pro-specific features in the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, which also is known as 1803. A number of these features are actually part of the latest refresh of Microsoft 365, which is the subscription bundle of Windows 10, Office 365, and Enterprise Mobility + Security, as officials noted last week.

Gents
Windows 10 updated my OS a couple of days ago. Since then my system is all over the place. Opening page completely changed. Task bars have disappeared. Windows Logo in bottom left corner, right click, nothing, left click, as before. Minimise any programme running, it just close's so can only run one app at a time. Has anyone any idea how to fix or go back to before the update.
Thanks in advance.

This details how to go back to a previous version of Windows 10.

However you might want to try running the Windows Update troubleshooter before you do that.

That might fix the issues you have & it is certainly safer, security-wise, to run the latest Windows version than to stick with previous versions...

Hi Bob
Just to let you (and anyone else who has this problem) I discovered that the the update had somehow change my settings from Desktop to Notebook and all the Notebook settings were the cause of the problems. Back in my beloved Desktop and all as normal. Think a wee whisky is called for to celebrate. Thanks again for your helpful response.

It is often the most simple of things that creates the issue.. :D
Spotting the simple change is often a far from simple process though...

How did you spot the error Alex??

To be honest it was just sheer luck. Being a computer dinosaur i was having no luck with your suggestions (we were using slide rules and log tables when i was at college) I right clicked the bottom left symbol and opened System and there is a sub heading called Tablet, opened it and Bingo there it was. In Tablet option and the two wee slider thingys fully open. Changed to Desktop and closed the sliders, restarted the computer a my baby was back in a form I can understand. Apologies for earlier post saying Notebook. Hope this helps someone else from the Jurassic age.

I had that problem on my laptop a year or more back. I lost the display of the desktop and icons and Firefox lost the minimise button. A local computer shop (in the UK) solved it for me. The computer had been operating in "tablet" mode. It was resolved (in my case) by selecting "computer" mode from a button at the bottom right corner of the menu bar.

There are certainly programs that can be downloaded from torrent sites that will solve your problems.
However...you need to be careful as you are relying on the honesty of the poster that the 'fix' does only as suggested & not other malicious deeds.
&, at the end of the day, you only have the not very secure or an ability to customise system.

Look at Mint 19, Cinnamon instead...PLEASE...

Bob, Can I ask, what is linuxmint, Mint 19 Cinnamon? Is it an (alternative) operating system to windows? Can it be used alongside Windows, or does using Mint mean that one would have to uninstall windows (thus losing lots of material and applications) to be able to install Lint?
