From the 80s onwards, the borderlands were rife with paramilitary cruelty and racism. But the president’s rhetoric has thrown fuel on the fire. By Greg Grandin

No myth in American history has been more powerful, more invoked by more presidents, than that of pioneers advancing across the frontier – a word that in the United States came to mean less a place than a state of mind, an imagined gateway into the future. No writer is more associated with the idea of the frontier than Frederick Jackson Turner, who, in the late 1800s, argued that the expansion of settlement across a frontier of “free land” created a uniquely American form of political equality, a vibrant, forward-looking individualism. Onward, and then onward again. There were lulls, doubts, dissents and counter-movements. But the expansionist imperative has remained constant, in one version or another, for centuries. As Woodrow Wilson, who before he was president was a colleague of Turner, said: “A frontier people always in our van, is, so far, the central and determining fact of our national history. There was no thought,” Wilson said, “of drawing back.”

Re: Democrats, Republicans and Elections
Today's Democrats are not the party of JFK.
Today's Democrats include antisemites, baby killers, atheists, socialists, terrorists, globalists, subversives and vile haters of America. These types are all over the world.
But their learning curve is steep. They always over-reach.

IMO this comment about socialism provided a concise and apt description.
"Harrison, the star of the History channel show and an outspoken conservative, delivered his speech on ‘the stupidity of socialism’ at one of the largest annual gatherings of conservatives just outside Washington, D.C.
“The majority [of] people in this room know that socialism is just stupid,” he said.
“It’s literally like heroin. The first shot is great. For a little bit it’s wonderful, but then the rest of your life is a living hell. And that’s literally what the socialists are doing.”
He continued later in the speech: “Once you give someone something it’s hard to take it away… then you get Venezuela.”

Re: Trump and the Stock Markets
That's a good rule of thumb.Giggle wrote: ↑February 28, 2019, 11:47 pmA good rule of thumb is to own your age in bonds (or safer). In other words, if you are 60 years old, risk only up to 40 percent in the stock market and hold your age, 60%, in safe money like CDs, bonds or trust accounts. When you turn 70, the ratio changes to 70/30.
I started investing in my 20s and continue to be a buy-and-hold type. I still own funds I started in the 80s and remember well Oct. 19, 1987 when the DJIA lost nearly 23 percent in one day -- more than 31 percent in that very bad week. I was new then, and didn't have much invested, but was encouraged to stay the course. I did, and it bounced back in a few months -- as it always does.
The markets have been up and down over the past two years, but generally up.
I need to check and see how far off I am from that ratio. Thanks!

Re: Democrats, Republicans and Elections
Here's an article summarizing the status of the latest socialist (aka communist) utopia, Venezuela.
"The mess in Venezuela is getting worse, but while that country is literally starving to death under the yoke of an incompetent, corrupt and malignant socialist dictatorship the hopes of a Ukrainian-style peaceful revolution or bloodless coup that would end the Nicolas Maduro regime are dimming.
The worst thing Trump could do, politically, is likely the best thing he could to do alleviate the suffering of the people of Venezuela as quickly as possible — namely, to send in the Marines and take out Maduro’s government. There is little evidence that’s coming, particularly since the U.S. would never act alone in that regard and neither the Colombians or Brazilians, who would have to join in, appear interested. That means Venezuelans will have to overthrow the regime, something they won’t have the brawn to do without armaments or conditions getting considerably worse.
Which means a lot of suffering is in the offing — both for the beleaguered people of Venezuela, who are learning the lesson that while one may vote oneself into socialism one has to shoot oneself out of it, and for the American Left, who will spend the next months and years explaining how Venezuela isn’t real socialism and shifting to Bolivia as the new socialist Wakanda (which won’t age well) while lecturing us how while they’ve supported all the same policies Chavez and Maduro have foisted on their people, the results of those policies here would be Totally Different You Guys."

Re: the early days of trumps wall
If pro-socialists do not care for pictures, are they affronted by quotes by previous well-known pro-socialists, such as?
"The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism.
But under the name of "liberalism" they will adopt every fragment of the Socialist program,
until one day America will be a Socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."
--Norman Thomas, longtime U.S. Socialist Presidential candidate
or "America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life.
If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within." ~ Joseph Stalin
Do they refute Lenin's belief that the goal of socialism is communism?

As far as Stalin's viewpoint goes, I reckon all they need to do is keep hewing away at the log of morality. Plenty dead wood there already.TJ wrote: ↑March 2, 2019, 5:30 amIf pro-socialists do not care for pictures, are they affronted by quotes by previous well-known pro-socialists, such as?

But that isn't a uniquely American trait either.
Re: Democrats, Republicans and Elections
The interesting thing in all of this is that I see some parallels -- SOME -- with Saddam. The similarity is that Maduro is the bad neighbor. There is no one in his neighborhood defending him -- just as there was no one in Saddam's neighborhood who was defending him -- and the media would have LOVED to interview leaders who disagreed with the removal of Saddam. The region was silent -- and they were assisting in various ways with Saddam's removal.TJ wrote: ↑March 2, 2019, 1:21 amHere's an article summarizing the status of the latest socialist (aka communist) utopia, Venezuela.

Where is the UN in all of this? Where's that big bad globalist man-made climate change gorilla? No teeth? Israel can't be blamed for this, so there's nothing to say?
Some coalition has to be created to put more pressure on Maduro. I would be money that such a plan is in the works.
The best way to get rid of Maduro is to isolate him to the point that he has no choice other than to remove himself, but that hurts the people of Venezuela even more.
As for the Democrat Socialists -- they're pushing a losing idea again. I've got more on that later.
