YOU WILL BE FORCED TO UPGRADE FROM WIN 7 TO 10

Post by yartims » May 2, 2019, 8:50 pm

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... windows-10

The result was that hundreds of millions of Windows users were stuck using less functional, less secure versions of Windows that were up to 10 years out of date. This also held back third-party software, because programmers couldn’t use new features.

With Windows 10, Microsoft solved all of these problems by moving to a system of continuous development. Instead of one huge upgrade every three years, you get smaller updates every six months, spring and autumn, and they are all free. There is less disruption, and eventually, everybody will be using the same up-to-date, most secure and best version of Windows.

Historically, by this stage, I should have written a half a dozen Ask Jack answers about moving to Windows 11. Obviously, Windows 11 was not released in 2018, so we were spared the whole circus that accompanied the launch of Windows 95, XP, Vista and the rest.

There is no "FORCE" to upgrade but security wise it would be highly recommended, but for some this will require a new computer as a lot of Windows 7 computers are not compatible with Windows 10. Also as an FYI do you know a lot of bank ATM'S in U.S. run on Windows XP.

I had an unpopular old version of Linux on my laptop. I still have a legal retail copy of Windows 7 Pro. I decided to put it on in place of Linux. The setup seemed to go well. Everything seemed to work OK but I could not get the WiFi to work. I suspect that Win 7 was way out of date and needed some drivers. There were no network drivers on the setup disc. I tried everything I could think of and no luck. I didn't try to connect my phone because those update downloads are huge. I downloaded Linux Mint 19.1 and installed it. Absolutely no problems, WiFi connected automatically and after I put in the password, everything worked fine. My Windows 7 Pro disc is in the trash. I never want to see Windows 7 again. I tried a Windows 10 knock off disc but it is 64 bit and that laptop is 32 bit. Windows 7 is history for me.

I grew up (computer-wise) on Windows. Pretty much every new edition of windows was better than the one it replaced......maybe by a factor of 10-20% better. But Windows 10 is far far better than any previous versions. And, it was free. And it's been updated innumerable times since I downloaded/installed it in July-ish of 2015. And it's replaced my anti-virus/anti-spam programs. And in 4 years, no hiccups. Oh, did I say it was free?

My first computer pictured below, Programing done in HEX.
There will be always improvements and upgrades and compatibility issues.
That is what keeps the IT people employed.

pantip plaza seemed to go downhill when windows 10 got too secure and snoopy for the hackers so MS shot themselves in the foot as 7 still has the bulk of users much to their chagrin

Maybe he means the 8 inch floppy disk - earlier than the 5.25.

Many years ago I had a popular small bar in Ohio. Trying to keep track of sales and inventory was a nightmare. I bought an IBM compatible computer from Radio Shack. It took me a couple of weeks to build a spread sheet and with an electronic cash register, All the sales and inventory information was there to see. After that was done, I would print it out on my dot matrix printer and post it in the bar kitchen. I was buying a lot more Budweiser than I was selling. It cost a couple of bartenders their jobs. The floppy discs were actually quit reliable and that was important because of the tiny hard drive. During an IRS audit, I had all the register tapes and spread sheets with me. I passed the audit with no problems.

Calcstar, wordstar, can't remember the rest.
No hdd just floppy drive ( 2 x 5.25") and onboard speech (English or Phoneme)
Did much the same as your spreadsheets etc.
Sadly the old Bondwell went in the 2013 flood.
