Curiously, Essex and Jackspratt both failed to reveal that Bob Carr was parachuted into the role of Foriegn Minister without being elected by the Australian voters. He filled a casual senate vacancy and lasted less than 2 years, exiting stage left with the demise of the then labour government of the day Essex, Jackspratt, if you are going to tell a story , try not to hold back facts that interested readers would need to consider in determining your bias on the subject.
I also didn't mention that Carr was married, but I would have was it was remotely relevant to the fact that he was highly qualified to write a story on Trump/USA.

Of course, Carr's appointment to the Senate was done according to the Australian Constitution (similar to Trump's election), as ratified by a ....... whoops .......... Liberal NSW parliament.

Oh, and you seem to overlook (failed to reveal?) that Carr was elected to the Senate in the 2013 election - so "try not to hold back facts that interested readers would need to consider" .... yadda ...yadda ..... yadda

Yes Jackspratt, Bob Carr was elected to the Senate in the 2013 election as he held pole position on the labour ticket however failed to take his place after Labour was routed at the election. It smacked of a child tossing all his toys out of the pram and that it would be beneath him to be a part of the opposition. A cock rooster one day and a feather duster the next springs to mind.

Mick,

Not sure where you got your figures from, these are actuals.

between 1995 and 2005 government debt reduced from $12.2 B to $1.2 B

1995 Deficit $4M
1996 Surplus $145M
1997 Surplus $1.9M
1998 Surplus $2.0M
1999 Surplus $2.0M
2000 Surplus $1.2M (despite financing the Olympics)
2001 Surplus $3.0M
2002 Surplus $368M
2003 Deficit $118m (The GFC hit this year)
2004 Deficit $379M
2005 Surplus $569
2006 Surplus $696

Overall a significant surplus, reduced government debt and reduced unemployment to 5.6%, the lowest in the commonwealth.

Where did you get your info on spending money like water? Sounds like an opinion, rather than one based on facts.

Thanks for pointing that out.
Who was the prime minister from 1995 to 2004?
John Howard, Liberal party.

Just shot yourself in the foot there =D>

He was opposition leader of NSW Labor for 6 years.

In 2013, at age of 65 he considered his position and felt it would be better to step aide and give Deb O'Neill a chance to establish herself in the Senate ahead of the planned 2016 Federal election. He could have stayed on as a shadow minster and collected around $240,000 a year, a senator in opposition is a very cushy role, but he chose to step down.

interesting to see the views of the uniformed on this thread. First of all decrying Bob's profound knowledge of the American political processes, then when that was shot down in flames, the naysayers turned to personal attacks.

John Howard, Liberal party.

Your comment was that Labor in NSW spent recklessly. They did not, they kept spending below revenue and almost eliminated debt. John Howard did not frame NSW budgets.

I would also point out, that almost every economist in the world pointed out that the Australian economy had already been reformed by Hawke & Keating prior to Howard taking office. He inherited a red hot economy fueled by reform and an unprecedented mining boom, what a great position to be in on assuming office.

That is an aside of course, your statement about spending by Carr is factually incorrect.

Let me also correct a mistake I made on an earlier post, the GFC hit in 2007, not 2003.

that is election dates Mick, not time served in office. He assumed office in March 1996 and left office in December 2006 where he became only the second Australian Prime Minister to lose in his own electorate. Open wider, you need room for that second foot.

OK - I understand now. You don't know that 1995 is not the same as 1996. :?

Essex,
With all your superior knowledge and insight into the workings of the labour party can you explain why Bob Carr accepted the No1 postiion on the Labour Senate ticket only to relinquish same after the election. If he had such regard for Deb O'Neill why didn't he offer her the position prior to the election.

still denying that Carr's government was not a reckless spender, still denying he i internationally renowned as an authority on American History and politics?

Had Bob stepped aside before he election, it would have been seen as a minister having no confidence in Rudd, that would have been politically unacceptable. He is neither the first or the last senator to resign under such circumstances, the latest being Christopher Pyne.

Your smarmy comment about superior knowledge is noted, but as a former middle ranking party office holder, I do have some insights.

Deb was the next member on the previous Senate ticket, well aligned with Sussex street and a natural choice.
